  • May I have some help with a weird problem in Win XP Home SP2?

I'm running this OS on a Presario 2100 and it's my "usual" internet computer. I have avast (free) on it along with some anti-spyware and anti-malware s/w. The internet is via an Asus WiLan card. It was working fine yesterday a.m. I shut it down, went to lunch, then after starting it wouldn't run the Asus card and so no internet. Odd... The usual checks turned up nothing so I thought it was a possible registry glitch. Tried to open system restore (via system tools) but it wouldn't open. So okay, In went to shut down and restart in safe mode and it wouldn't do a full shutdown. Cleared all desktop icones then just sat there. So I used reset, then restarted in safe mode and managed to egt into sys restore. There was only one rollback point available. Northing before this month. There should be a load of restore points but couldn't access previous months. So I restored to the only one it gave me. Shut down and auto-restart. Still the same trouble. Oaky, back to safe mode. Tried getting into them via Iobit's "Advanced System Care". Accessed the list of rollback points and chose one from last month. Then rebooted again. Still same problem.

Desperation now... I used a Ubuntu disk (kosmic koala) to boot up into the Ubuntu OS then used that to get into the SVI folder's RP74 folder and got copies of the files in the snapshot folder there, that can be used to sometimes fix the dreaded blue screen problem. Made a copy of the same files in the config folder in System 32 and put them in a temp, deleted those files from config and pasted in the snapshot versions (which date from May 12 if I recall). Shut down Ubuntu and restated in normal win mode. Still no dice!

Some of the sw is running. I can click on eg "My computer" in normal mode -- and even the normal start menu and -- access many sw files, but *some* won't open, like eg avast or the Iobit I mentioned above. But I can access that Iobit sw in safe mode.

I checked the "tree" for the C drive and the Asus folder is there and marked with a plus sign, so it's not like it's vanished or anything.

I am absolutely stumped. If anyone has heard of this porblem then please help out. It's an old laptop but I still would like to use it. And no, I don't have an XP install disk. They never supplied one when I bought it.

  • How do I use my recovery disks to reinstall Vista on my Sony Vaio?

I have no personal data files on the new laptop that is of value so I'm not worried about backing them up. Just wish to install the original Vista as it was out of the box -- "bloatware" and all. :)

  • Lyrics for "Saviour" by Colin James?

I'm trying to find lyrics for Colin James' song "Saviour" in a format that can be copied and pasted. I use music as a component of teaching my English as a Foreign Language courses and it would be great for my students if we can have a totally correct version of this song. I'd be very grateful for your help and will give ten points to the first one who can direct me to a suitable site/link.

    Thank you! :)

  • Could somebody please help with opening rar files?

When I download rar files I extract them using the "ExtractNow" program. Usually it works fine. However, I have a couple of files that won't go... When I drag & drop them into ExtractNow, and click on "extract" I just get a message: "Cannot find next volume".

Does anyone have a fix for this? A second problem is that one file will not drag & drop into ExtractNow. I mean, I can drag it on the desktop but it refuses to drop into the ExtractNow. Weird...Love to know how to fix that too...

I will give points for the best answer! (This is only my scond question here -- so I won't forget!!) Many thanks!

  • Help! I have a problem with using Adobe PhotoDeluxe?

I have genuine Adobe PhotoDeluxe version 2.0 installed on my PC, which runs Win XP OS, standard installation (also genuine). I've used PD for ages with no major problems, but I now cannot even open any image files in PD if they are larger than say 50KB! I get an error message that my primary scratch disk is full and I need to free up some space. It says I need at least 50MB.

My "C" drive is the designated primary disk and there is no secondary disk on this PC. I checked properties for my "C" drive and it has over 8 GIGA Bytes of space free, so I can't work out what the problem is.

Can someone PLEASE help?? I have some urgent work to do on some images and I am completely stuck!

Note: My PC is not connected to Internet so I can't download any fix that way. I hope there is something I can do to solve the problem via inputting commands or whatever. Many Thanks, Lenky.
