  • I understand what under contract means, but recently saw an MLS listing that was "under contract until [date]"?

I have never seen this before. Does this mean the seller can look for better offers until this date, or the buyer has until this date to come up with money and thus the seller can t take other offers, or something else?

  • What might M.C. stand for other than Marine Corps?

On a local WWI memorial there are all these men who died is the "ARMY" "M.C." and "C.E.F."

I always assumed the MC meant Marine Corps and the CEF was the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Fair enough, right? But today I saw the back panel and there are a few men who died in the "ARMY," "NAVY," and "USMC." So if there's a USMC, what is M.C. ?

We are talking World War One

  • What sailors are in ANGLICO?

What is the US Navy path to joining an Air and Naval Gunfire Liaison Company? The reserve ANGLICO unit seems to get the coolest reserve deployments. That said, does anyone know what Navy Reservists in general end up in Marine Reserve units? I see Navy officers all the time so it must not be limited to corpsmen...

  • Leave Verizon or bite the bullet?

I know this is highly subjective, but I honestly want some input from strangers.

    Background.....

I have Verizon. Don't tease me, but I still have a Palm Pixi. Aside from the fact that I am forced to use BING instead of goole for maps, I'm happy with the Pixi because the OS really is fast and simple, the browser is great, and I can use it as a mobile hotspot for free (up to 5gb).

I'm an xbox guy, so I never really cared much for games on my phone (and I've had smartphones since 2001) and I usually read on the train. I'm not giving up my books for Temple Run any time soon.

That said, I have one week before Verizon ends my unlimited data plan. I didn't plan for this. I HATE Bing enough to warrant an iPhone. In fact I was waiting for the iPhone, but bought the Pixi because my phone was stolen a few months before Verizon got the iPhone. I must have a smartphone, but only because I use the internet, mp3, email, and map functions so heavily. Voice and Apps are not a concern for me.

    So here's my question....

I didn't plan for Verizon to end unlimited data. I therefore don't want to spend $200 on a phone in the middle of the summer when I need beach passes, road trips, and condoms and stuff.

Do you think it's worth it to buy an iPhone 4 now for $99 or wait 'til the fall and buy and iPhone 5 from Sprint. Consider that if I don't not get the iPhone 4 now (for two years), I MUST move to Sprint, because I can't afford Verizon's new data plans and I'm not willing to pay $200 for Siri. What would you do? Do you think an iPhone 4S is worth the extra money?

--note and iphone 4 is $99, and iphone 4s is $199 (and the drive is bigger), neither offer free hotspot

  • Is every individual plane its own sortie?

For the longest time I thought any single flight mission was a sortie. That said, a strike run, a recon run, a search, and a refueling could be a sortie as I originally assumed. I read today that NATO launched 26,500 sorties against Libya last year. WHAT?! How is that possible? Are we counting every individual plane launched?

  • Does a gel fireplace put out decent heat?

I used to live in a large open loft apartment. Electric heaters were absolutely useless. No matter what, I think the max was about 5000 BTU or so.

So I got a kerosine heater. It worked but I had to keep buying fuel and I heard I smelled like an engine. I don't smell nothin' !

I am moving into a new open loft apartment this summer and I know that women won't come over this fall unless I have a source of heat. So I am considering a gel fireplace.

My hope is that a gel fireplace can produce MORE heat than an electric fireplace. I'm no so much worried that it only lasts 4 hours or so because it's more for my guests than for me. After 5 years in a loft, I learned to dress warm around the house.

    Any comments?

  • What is pay like for wounded veterans?

Is there a special type of pay wounded veterans receive? Does it have a special name? Is it just workers comp?

I'm asking in regard to a screenplay unrelated to war which has a supporting character suffering from wounds (physical and emotional). These wounds led to his discharge (unless that becomes impractical later in the story)

  • In the British Army, does the term "Horse" mean mechanised?

I am just trying to understand this. If a regiment has Horse in the name, is that like the Marines' Light Armored Recon (Recon with tanks), or is it mechanized infantry (Infantry with motor vehicle support). Do they provide reconnaissance for the larger force?

  • Do intellectual property laws apply at all across international borders?

I recently read an article about a Brazilian computer game company copying an American computer game company's products in a clear and consistent manner. But does the American company have any remedies? The companies' products are mostly or completely through facebook, so it would seem that the Brazilian company does not have an entity in America, rather it can operate remotely, in Brazil, and American consumers navigate the web to them. There are no physical goods and therefore no need to have subsidiaries across the border. Does this sort of thing fall under our trade agreements?

  • Is there a traditional area/orientation for getting a pig and rooster tattoo on my feet?

I've seen these tattoos al over the place when I do google searches, but I do not fully understand if there is a specific place sailors traditionally got them. I want to try to be close to tradition as this is going to permanently alter otherwise handsome feet (I never played soccer). I put this in the military section with hope that a sailor or otherwise knowledgable person might answer as opposed to the hipsters who haunt the tattoo section. I don't live in Brooklyn; I fight from a boat.

  • How dangerous is 10,000v?

I'm running a race with difficult obstacles. One obstacle is a field of dangling electric wires (called the jellyfish). If touched the wires could shock me. Some are charged, some aren't. The ones that are may have up to 10,000 volts. That sounds like a lot to me. Is that outrageous? How dangerous is 10,000 volts? Can it kill a person or will it just hurt a lot? How could this be a safe obstacle?

  • Why would a secret service agent be on "To Catch a Predator" ?

I am watching "To Catch a Predator," my new favorite show, and when one of the perps had his police interrogation, a secret service agent sat in on it and took notes. This continued for some of the other interrogations as well. Some of the men who were busted are in the national guard which the show suggests is "part of the military." I'm confused as to why the secret service would investigate this type of matter. Is it because some were in the military? I don't think all of the men interviewed with the SS agents were. It seems to fall out of their jurisdiction. Shouldn't the federal agency be the FBI and in some cases the ICE? Was the show just wrong? Can someone shed some light on why the SS would be covering this? I thought they were just for federal property, money, and protecting dignitaries...

  • Is there a place in New York where I can sell gold bars in person?

I can't pay my rent in gold bars (although I haven't brought that up with my landlord). Is there a place in New York where I can trade Heraeus or Sussie gold bars at close to market value? I really want to pay my rent and/or buy a car and gold bars are not respected tender.
