If I am in the middle of a Ch 13 bankruptcy, can I open a non-profit organization? *Please respond only if you know for sure* (see details)?
When I was 18 years old, my mother thought it would be a good idea for me to be place on a mortgage with her on a house that we were going to live in. A few years later, she filed for bankruptcy, and I was held responsible for the house (at 19). Several years later, I filed, but for ch 13, which I am in the middle of right now. My friends and I are planning on submitting paperwork for a non-profit we want to open later this year. Am I legally "unable" to not open a non-profit? If so, then I just plan on stepping back from the organization (paper-work wise) until I am off bankruptcy; or I will just put my wife on it. No big deal. If I am not forbidden from doing so, then I will be a happy camper and can start helping homeless, ill, and marginalized persons through the work I want to do. Please let me know guys. I have searched the web endlessly and have not found anything that could help. Thanks!!!

1 AnswerGovernment & Non-Profit6 years agoQuestion about Lost Girl Access in Canada?
Ok, so my wife and I are going to Montreal this weekend, and we have been extremely annoyed that we cannot view Lost Girl on Xfinity s website, nor on SyFy for that matter. We can t even buy it on iTunes! I would like to know, if, once I arrive to Canada, I can just download the whole season on iTunes (purchased, of course)... please let me know. I ve tried just about everything and my wife and I just gave up trying!
Thanks peeps!

2 AnswersOther - Canada6 years agoAlmost PhD (Feb 2014) Recently Married, live in FL. Offered DC internship again in Jan. Should I do it again?
I'm a PhD student of Conflict Studies/Social Sciences, expected to finish in a few months, my dissertation is almost done. I got an internship in DC for 4 months back in August and it's almost ending. I got offered the internship again for Jan-April at the National Institute of Health. I'm not publishing articles or anything at my internship, it is generally built for undergrad students. I asked my boss to allow me to take Fridays and Thursday evenings off in order to fly back to Florida every Thursday night and come back in every Monday morning into work, so that I could be with my wife at least 4 nights out of the week from January to April, and my boss said that she is cool with that (surprisingly)! I am also applying for post docs in the ethics and social sciences areas of NIH, that fits my academic status a little more than an internship, and would pay me enough for my wife to quit her job in FL and for us to move up to the DC area. The doctoral fellowship would start in September of 2014 however. My hesitances to do the internship again are for the following reasons:
1: my wife and I have only been married for a year and we already had a life and a little routine that we settled into, and I don't want the half week distance thing to affect our relationship.
2: it would cost me all of the money I make during the internship to fly down to Florida once a week, but it's something I would be willing to pay, my wife and I alternate every week flying up and down currently so I see her Friday nights thru Sunday afternoon.
3: I'm doing the things that an inexperienced undergrad would do during an internship. I have 10 years of work experience and almost done with my doc.
4: I have not been able to answer the question, "what will this internship do for me TWICE, that it cannot do for me ONCE?"
Ultimately, I want to be a social scientist in the realm of health and inequities. Economic Epidemiology, I think encapsulates that want. If I can get one of the postdoctoral fellowships with NIH, I would also apply for Master of Public Health degree to do that part time and get it paid for.
Would these 4 extra months really do me any good? My dissertation chair advises me to just come back to Florida, and focus on finishing my dissertation in January, and then apply for postdocs, not internships.... My professor says that doing the internship again will simply be a distraction and that it would hold me back from finishing my degree.
What are your thoughts? I don't want to risk my marriage for 4 more lil months of doing undergraduate level work... Thanks guys. Serious advice only please?
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)7 years agoHelp please: 26 year old Ph.D./Social Science - and I still dream of going to Med School (MD/DO)?
Hello! I desperately need some insights, given that I am not sure who to turn to for my academic-predicament. I am 26 years old, a year into a wonderful marriage with my wife (29 years old), and we are both finishing our Ph.D in Conflict Analysis & Resolution; I am due to finish my PhD in a few months, and my wife is a year behind me. I have a Master's degree in Finance and a B.Sc in Business.
After high school, I couldn't leave far from my single mother because I had to help her raise her two children (my siblings). So I went for the degree path that I thought was the fastest, and would let me get a job sooner so that I could help my mother out -- so I went for business; despite the fact that as a child, I have been inspired to be a physician, more specifically a gastroenterologist or oncologist, after witnessing how much they cared for my father before cancer took his life when I was 7 years old (he was just 28 when he died). Additionally, my grandfather is a surgeon/dentist in his home country, my great-grandmother's brothers have internal medicine practices, and my ancestor, was a famous Epidemiologist/Physician/Economist in Spain in the 1800s (Dr. Jose De Letamendi). I had to put my dream aside due to circumstances that were beyond my control, and I stayed in south Florida. I got a job at my current university, which is where I got my Master's degree in Finance, and I met my wife just before starting the Ph.D. program we are in now, at the same university. I encouraged my wife to get the awesome job she has now, and she agreed to financially take care of us if I decided to move forward with my med school dream, which is awesome. Last year, I took anatomy and physiology 1 & 2 plus lab, just to see if I would be 'good at it'; I loved the material, and did very well in my classes. I took it while working on my dissertation, and working full time at my university.
Problem. Since I couldn't be a bio-major at a state school like I initially wanted to due to circumstances beyond my control, I never took Chem, Bio, Org Chem, Physics, Precalc, Calc, Trig (prerequisites for med school). If I wanted to take these, it would put my estimated enrollment date for med school at August 2015. By that time I would be 28 years old. After med school, I'd be about 32, and about 37 after my residency. My wife and I do not have kids, but we do plan on having children eventually, definitely after we finish our Ph.Ds. With our current credentials, we could definitely get great jobs that would pay us well over 6-figures, but fundamentally, I want to have that rewarding feeling that I helped someone evade death, helped to keep them safe, helped to keep the family together and a relative they love. I want to help people who do not have means, people who do not generally have access to medicine and medical care, and who are in need. That is the population that I want to work for. If I did not have this dream of going to medical school, I would probably try to get a job in DC with a governmental or non-governmental organization that helps people in humanitarian efforts, human rights, hunger issues, economic disparities, etc.
I am currently registered for 3 classes to start in Aug 26th: Precalc, Biology 1, and Chem 1, all of which I need for med school. My wife doesnt' want me to work while I am taking these classes, but I did find a part time, which can be done from home, as a researcher for my professor. I like to plan for the long term, and I want my children to live in a world where they don't have a deficit of anything, and where they can focus on living life, helping others and serving the community. If I follow my plan, I would take these 3 classes Aug-Dec 2013; 3 more classes Jan-May 2014, 2 classes Aug-Dec 2014, and my last 2 classes Jan-May 2015. I can stay working for my professor part time all this time, I just have to NOT officially confer my degree yet. By the way, the PhD that I am working on studies why people engage in conflict, from the interpersonal level to the municipal and global level (and how to resolve them), war theory, genocide, humanities, peace, and sustainability.
I have sincere questions for you. If possible, I would prefer current medical students, current MDs / DOs, and PhDs to reply.
1) Do you think I am wasting my time? To be honest, if I did not have the support of my wife, I couldn't and wouldn't be doing any of this.
2) Is 28 a good age to be in medical school, or is that "too old"?
3) Are there any med-student parents out there? How's your experience with that?
4) Do you think I should just pass my dream on to my future children (should they choose to do so) and just accept that I never got a chance to realize what I really wanted to be in life and simply make a life with my current PhD, which I can finish as early as January of 2014?
Thanks guys, I really appreciate your advice/insights.
Peace & Love,

1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)8 years agoFather died of Familial Polyposis (FAP) at 28 yrs old. How often should I have colonoscopies?
My father was diagnosed with cancer at 26 or 27 years old, when his FAP was advanced and has already passed through to his liver; he died at 28 years of age, I was 7 at the time. The surgeons told my mother that his polyps looked "grapevine-like", and were about 800 in total, of various sizes. Years passed, and now I just turned 26. As you can imagine, I am a bit concerned. I attended a seminar on Sunday to learn about the different kinds of surgeries that are does to people who have total colectomies done; just so that I understand my options - should FAP activate in me. I have had 2 colonoscopies done; I believe the last one was 2 or 3 years ago, no polyps were seen. I have heard a lot of mixed responses to how often offspring of FAP patients should get colonoscopies; anywhere from every 6 months to up to every 5 years. Which is it? I really don't mind either way, but want to make sure that if it is the case that I will get it, I can take action. Moreover, I am a mildly stressed person, I work full time and am also finishing up my PhD full time, I eat lots of fruits and veggies, I don't eat beef or chicken (so I guess you can call me a 'semi-vegan'?), I do opt for vegetarian dishes and burger patties if I go to a fast food place.
Any suggestions? Just yesterday I ate fruits for breakfast and during a meeting/training at work, I had really really bad gas-related colic, which was very odd, my stomach is usually very tranquil during the workday. Thanks for your support everyone.

2 AnswersOther - Diseases8 years agoMother in law's 10 y/o dog refuses to eat..help!?
Ten year old dalmation/pointer mix. All vaccines updated, feces and blood sample came back ok. Dog is vomiting everything she eats. Was taken to the vet and prescribed meds, antibiotics to help with the vomiting. Dog is visibly losing weight and has flappy skin now between her legs. I felt her for swollen nodes, and did not feel any swollen nodes. Recommended that she be fed chicken and rice (blended in blender) in a porridge fashion. Dog eating if spoonfed a little bit. Any suggestions? She was also given oatmeal by owner and she is accustomed to always having been fed human leftover food. Any ideas? The mother in law is devastated, the dog has really been the only companion she has had in the last few years... any suggestions will help.
9 AnswersDogs9 years agoHow do I turn off mobile service and just leave on wifi on Samsung Galaxy SII? (Traveling abroad/honeymoon)?
Hello everyone! I am getting married in 30 days! My wife and I will go on a cruise that sails all over europe, and then after the cruise, we are going to drive from Rome to Paris... I have a Samsung Galaxy SII Titanium (Android, 4G/3G). I want to know how to turn off the data and the mobile, and ONLY leave wifi, so that I can use my phone to stream Pandora, Skype my mom and my wife's mom on video chat, etc. Basiclaly, we want to use the phone as though it were an ipod touch drawing from wifi, and nothing more. There will always be wifi no matter where we are, so that is why we want to turn off the mobile service and just use wifi, so that we dont pay roaming, international text, etc. I do not see anyplace in the "settings" that allows me to do this... any help? Thanks!!!
2 AnswersCell Phones & Plans9 years agoTook in abandoned cat - please help!?
Three week ago, a neighbor moved away. They owned a white/beige cat, but I don't think they wanted it. Everyday, they would open the door in the morning, let the cat out all day for the whole day, and then call her in late at night to come back inside. The cat would ley my fiancee and I pet it, woud purr, and then we would go into our unit, leaving the cat behind. This week, I felt terrible, bc the cat reppeared, and was waiting for the owner (who no longer lives in the unit) to open the door... The cat followed my fiancee into our home. I got it cat food, litter, and toys, and she seems happy, but she stands by the door and near the windows, as though she is telling me she wants to go outside... I did let her the day before yesterday, and she saw me, climbed down from the tree she was at and came into our home again. I don't want to let her go back out; in fear of caputure (she has no collar), fights with other animals (we have a swampy area near here) or her getting lost... Should I let her out? Also, I got her canned food and dried food, how much should she get? IDK how much she weighs or anything. We are taking her to a vet on Tuesday. Please help! I have never had a cat before. Thanks!!
7 AnswersCats9 years agoWedding Dilemma Please Help =(?
My fiancee and I are getting married in a few months. The cost of the wedding is a little steeper than we expected. We are still going to do it; but we are like, entering events to see if we can win some cash to allocate to all of the expenses. Our families cannot afford to help us, we are both full time employees and doctoral students... and we are trying our best! Tell us what you think of this video we made? All you need to do is go to YouTube.com, and paste this into the search bar:
Sheridan Ocean Club Apartments - Dania Beach, FL - "Why I Love My Home" 13
If you click "like"... it will help us win some $$$ for our wedding! Only 1 week before they make their choice! But most importantly, just want to know what you think! ;)

I just bought an engagement ring for my girlfiend. Princess cut platinum/white gold with 17 surrounding diamonds around the diamond and matching wedding band. "Leo Diamond" (one of the most sparkly on earth). When I propose to her, she will DEFINITLEY want to wear the matching band as well. I wouldn't mind her wearing it. Is this bad? Should I hide the wedding band? Its a beautiful accent to the ring...what do you think?

I will be preparing taxes this year for a non-profit that helps central American-US tax payers who do not understand English; I will not be charging a fee for my services. Do I have to put my information on the 1040? I noticed that it asks for a PTIN # and preparer's info, but the label for the field says "Paid Preparer's Use Only". Please advise. Thanks!!!!!!!

I have a MacBook that I use for my Doctoral studies.. the iPad seems so impractical to have but half of me wants it! IDK.. =/ I have an iPod touch as well, but saw a student in one of my classes with it and it seems so quick to find articles for discussion, taking a few quick notes, battery life, etc.

2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoFinance MBA & Doctor of Conflict Analysis/Resolution Prospects for work?
I am a soon to be graduate with my MBA in Finance. I will do my PhD, but I don't want it to be in finance, but rather something that I can tie together with finance. I will be starting my Doctorate in Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) in May, 2010. I will be 23 at the time I start the PhD, and should be 26 or 27 by the time I get my Doctorate. With those two degrees, what do you think my prospects for a job are? I know that I can work at a bank (because of the MBA) and mediation, government, education or counseling because of the DCAR. Any one else know what I may be able to do with the combination of the above two degrees? Thanks guys!!!
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoPhD Dilemma: Ivy League Dream vs. My Family?
Hello everyone. I am currently wrapping up my last 2 semesters of my MBA in finance in South Florida. I should finish sometime March 2010. I have been applying to Doctoral programs in the following schools: Cornell, MIT, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia. I have a problem though. I am pretty much like a crutch for my single mom (two small children). Since I live nearby, I help her a lot, ie, taking care of the kids while she goes to school, give her money, take her to the hospital, etc. Obviously, if I'm in Boston or NY, I won't be able to provide her that support. My goal is to be a PhD, no matter where I do it. It would be financially better for me to go to one of the Ivy leagues (100% tuition + salary, no work). I currently work at the school I attend and also get 100% tuition, but I work full time and it would be that much harder on me. Also, I met this girl here that caught my eye, not saying that there's a sure chance for me, but the possibility exists and if Leave, then there won't be. I won't be able to help my mom out like I am now, and she'll probably have to drop out of school, not to mention that I would not be able to be a positive influence to my siblings, mother, and everyone else that I know and has a day to day relationship with me. Getting my PhD here in South Florida would be much like how I'm doing now (full time work, full time school)... Any who, I'm stuck and don't know what to do... Any suggestions?
3 AnswersHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoBankruptcy in a Joint-Mortgage? Do both get affected?
A couple of years ago my mother and I purchased an investment home as joint-owners. My mother is undergoing a bankruptcy but I am not. She is considering putting the home on the bankruptcy because the investment is not going well at all, and we cannot afford it. If her bankruptcy "eats up" the debt, does that save me? Or am I in some way held liable as well? I am a 22 y/o MBA finance major, soon to be PhD Business student, so to me, I get my federal loans regardless... Im just concerned about the outcomes because I don't know what it is... any ideas or experiences?
