  • Home wifi works. Computer connects to wifi networks... but not mine. Help?

My desktop is unable to connect to my home(Sky) network. It has no trouble connecting to other nearby networks, like BTopenzone hotspots(there are two nearby), but it just says it cannot connect the one we actually pay for. I'm not getting the key wrong, it's not that.

Other wifi devices have no trouble connecting to my home network. I'm currently using my netbook, sitting in front of my desktop, connected to the right network. I dug up an old smartphone to see it it would connect, and it does.

    Any ideas?

  • Why are we told to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth?

I'm sure we've all been told, probably in a PE lesson, that when doing exercise you should breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. But why? As far as I can tell, all it does is restrict how much air you get and make your sinuses hurt.

  • Google Play Music keeps opening by itself?

I have a Galaxy S2, which is generally a good phone but recently I've been finding that the Google Play Music app keeps turning itself on by itself. It's really draining the battery, which is really annoying. How can I stop it? Obviously, being a google app on an android phone I can't delete it.

  • Why does my kitten do this?

I have a kitten, not quite 6 months old, so she's currently an indoor cat until after she's spayed. Every time she uses the litter tray, she scratches and digs around in it for about 15 minutes altogether. It doesn't matter whether it's just been cleaned or it's just about to be.

It's very noisy and sprays sawdust pellets all over the place, why does she do it? And can she be persuaded not to?

She shares the litter tray with one older cat.

  • How do I delete this page from my new tabs?

I recently downloaded what turned out to be some dodgy software that installed a toolbar in Firefox, and set the homepage for new tabs to its search engine (Babylon, which I do not trust as far as I could spit). Getting rid of the toolbar was easy enough, but now every time I open a new tab it shows the Babylon search page. I can't see a way to change this. Can anyone help?

  • how many clips can windows movie maker cope with at once?

I'm attempting video editing for the first time, so I'm using the free software from microsoft(Windows 7 download) rather than spending money on it. I've got 2 minutes and 20 seconds of WMV footage imported, chopped up into 133 clips, and a 2 minute mp3 sound track. It's crashing like crazy - insisting that all the clips are broken - whenever I try to make it do just about anything, and it started doing this while I was still splitting up the clips. So it makes me think that maybe I've just given it too many individual bits to cope with.

When it says that all clips are broken, I can actually save the file, reopen it and it's fine. But it's also removed the video from some of them, leaving them black - is it possible to get the image back?

  • how can I change my google account on my android phone?

I have two accounts with Google, one personal and one professional. Like a numpty, when I first got my phone(LG GT540) I signed in to the calendar and email apps with my personal address. I could really, really do with having my professional emails without having to browse the web for them - I can't see any account settings in either app, so what do I do?

  • Is it normal for an old cat's ears to start going bald?

I have a 15 year old Birman, and just lately I've been noticing that the middle of his ears - where they bend - are bald. The tips and base still have hair on them, it's just the middle.

Is this a normal sign of old age or is something wrong with him?

  • AVG files totally unresponsive?

I've been having computer troubles lately, and thanks to doing two things the wrong way round, currently have no antivirus protection.

I updated AVG 8.5 to AVG 9.0(free editions both), THEN restored my computer's system to a date before then. This had the desired effect of making my computer run a lot faster, but reset it to thinking it's still got AVG 8.5. All the AVG 8.5 files were deleted when it updated, so I went to grisoft.com to download AVG 9.0. It won't work. I download the files, they sit in my download folder, and I can't make them do anything at all. Double clicking on them does nothing, clicking and hitting enter does nothing, if I right-click the 'open' option is greyed out.

It basically looks like my computer doesn't recognise the files as files at all - I don't even get a 'what programme would you like to open this file with?' type dialogue box. I must have downloaded them at least 15 times now, trying to get them to do something and work. I even tried using Internet Explorer to download them in case it was Firefox with the problem.

Is there anything I can do?

  • Should Singer 2045 and 2054 needles be the same size?

At the top, where you screw them into the machine? My overlocker(Singer Ultralock 14U32) takes 2054, and my needle snapped the other day. I went out and bought new needles, but they are 2045, and won't go into the needle hole. Is this normal, or is it a fault with my machine? Will buying 2054 needles be the end of my trouble, or will they also not fit?

I brought the stub of the old needle with me when I bought the new ones, and they looked the same size so the difference must be minute.

  • Can I set a Singer Ultralock 14U32 to turn hems?

I have a dear little 3-thread overlocker(that is very keen on sitting on my lap when I use it), and have been using it to make leggings and leotards. While it's great for professional looking seams, I have to go back to my regular machine to zig-zag the hems. Is it possible to get the professional standard hem with a normal overlocker?

  • Web browsers freeze and computer refuses to shut down or restart - help?

I have a relatively new laptop, that's just come out of it's free McAfee internet security trial. The second it ran out, I downloaded AVG and ZoneAlarm, which have served me well on old computers, but since then(last week) my computer's developed a nasty little habit.

After a few minutes of browsing, any web browser(I thought it was just Firefox at first, but then I tried Internet Explorer and it did the same thing) will freeze up, refuse to download any pages and refuse to shut down. If I close all windows and try to open it up again, I get a system message telling me that it's still running and needs to be shut down, or the computer restarted. Device Manager can't see anything running, so my only option is to restart the computer.

    It won't.

If I try to restart or shut down via the start menu, it does nothing. Nothing at all. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button until it turns off.

I've run AVG and it doesn't see any viruses. What's going on?

  • Potentially daft question - Equity card?

I got my student Equity card through the post the other day, and I need to sign it. Thing is, my professional name is not the same as my legal name. Which name do I sign? The one on the card, or the one that goes on legal documents?

  • the skin on my toes looks like the surface of the moon. Is this Athlete's foot?

It doesn't show particularly when the skin is dry, but when I've just got out of the shower it's really obvious. I haven't been grinding the dry skin off recently, so I'd expect it to be smooth - what's with all the craters? They're all slightly less than 1mm across.

  • system won't let me click?

My laptop - bought in 2005 - has always been perfectly behaved, until recently. It's developed a very annoying habit - it won't let me click on anything. If I try, the whole window greys out. Keyboard shortcuts are apparently acceptable, so my navigation consists of tab, tab, tab, tab, space. A month or so after this started I bought an external harddrive and emptied a third of the computer's contents onto it, but this hasn't helped.

At first it was only doing this when I opened too many windows, and closing one would solve the problem. But now opening anything sets it off.

A lot of the websites I frequent are non-html, so tabbing to links then using the spacebar or enter won't work. The cursor still moves around on the screen, but clicking either button(for some reason the scroll wheel still works) greys out whatever I'm using. Same applies to the touchpad.

Is there anything - short of buying a new laptop - that I can do?

I've tried system restore, and it did nothing.

  • Can I transfer downloads from one phone to another?

I got a new phone for Christmas. It's the same make as my old phone, Sony Ericsson, so uses the same cables etc.

I bought and downloaded a sudoku game for my old phone which I'd like to keep. Is there any way to transfer it? I've had a look at them both on my computer, and I found the game files on my old phone, but the folder they were in doesn't seem to exist on my new one.

I can't find it to download again either, not that I particularly want to pay twice for the same game.

  • Ripspeed CMR-2000 - error 6?

I've just had one of these fitted, and yesterday plugged in my USB stick(that has all sorts of stuff on it) to see if it would play what music there is on there. It did, very well. Happy with this, I took the front of the unit off for safekeeping, went into the house and loaded up that USB stick with music.

Now it won't work. It won't play anything from my other, newer USB stick(which was a replacement for the first and as such has all the same data as it did before) either. It identified the names of the tracks without playing them one time, but every other time I've plugged it in it sits there reading 'USB DRV' for about a minute before stating 'ERR 6' and switching to radio.

What can I do? The radio reception isn't even very good.

  • If laser hair removal has failed in the past, will it ever work?

Or does it just mean that I'm incompatible with the treatment?

I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS(which explains a lot) and want to know if it's possible to get rid of the hateful stuff sprouting out of all the wrong places. I had laser treatment once before, for 9 months, and if anything it's worse than before. If I tried again, would the same thing happen?
