  • What did you think of the dogs in the Super Bowl commercials?

I liked that Bud Light squeezed a plug for adopting rescue dogs into the "Weego" commercial, but think Skechers was *really* tone-deaf in its Mr. Quiggly (French Bulldog) ad, which implicitly endorses Greyhound racing. In the last few decades, as the public comes to know what nice pets Greyhounds are, and the miserable conditions they endure at racing kennels and tracks, it has increasingly turned its back on dog tracks and the numbers of fans, and tracks, have plummeted. The ad was filmed at Tucson Greyhound Park, which is one of the country's worst. Last week a committee of the Arizona legislature voted unanimously to phase out dog racing in their state. Skechers was informed many months ago of dog lovers' objections to Greyhoung racing, but refused requests to pull the ad.

  • How acceptable is tethering?

There's a proposal in Cleveland, Ohio to restrict the hours owners are permitted to tether their dogs.

Would you support similar rules in your area? http://www.lifewithdogs.tv/2012/01/cleveland-consi...

  • Is Mitt Romney guilty of abusing his dog?

When he ran for governor of Massachusetts, he and his spokespeople released a story about Romney's strapping his dog, in its carrier, to the roof of their car before driving to their vacation destination. They thought this was an example of how cool-headed and resourceful he is. http://shar.es/W2z1n

It didn't seem to occur to anyone but the voting public (and not enough of them to elect his opponent)

that if this scenario had been witnessed by police or animal control personnel, he could have been charged with animal cruelty. I suppose a country that has forgiven Michael Vick won't think this was a big deal. I do, and I am sure Seamus did too.

  • What dog magazines do you read/subscribe to?

I periodically (pun intended) subscribe to The Bark and Whole Dog Journal. Since each tends to reprise its topics every year or so, I don't think one loses out on much by not reading every single issue. I am guessing the majority of YA Dog Section users don't read dog magazines, or they'd already know the answers to the questions they ask.

  • Why the reluctance to use a muzzle?

Every day there are posts in the dog section from people who seem to consider a muzzle some sort of torture device, though they'll use prong and choke collars. Since a basket muzzle allows a dog to drink and pant, and causes no discomfort, why will owners consider surrendering their dog to a shelter rather than putting a muzzle on it?

  • Beware of counterfeit dog medications?

This is a warning, not a question. On March 13, 2011's "60 Minutes", there was an expose about the widespread problem of counterfeit prescription drugs manufactured in Asia (mostly India and China) being sold in America and elsewhere. The packaging and pills themselves are often identical to the naked eye, so even pharmacists and physicians would not be suspicious until the medicines fail to work as they should, or cause adverse reactions. Medications manufactured in the USA are not necessarily untainted, either, since the compounds used in their creation are usually imported.

I would caution against buying any veterinary prescription meds being sold online without prescription, and examine packaging for any obvious clues (e.g. misspellings) that the medication isn't genuine. Let your vet know if anything s/he dispenses isn't working.
