Is Mitt Romney guilty of abusing his dog?
When he ran for governor of Massachusetts, he and his spokespeople released a story about Romney's strapping his dog, in its carrier, to the roof of their car before driving to their vacation destination. They thought this was an example of how cool-headed and resourceful he is. http://shar.es/W2z1n
It didn't seem to occur to anyone but the voting public (and not enough of them to elect his opponent)
that if this scenario had been witnessed by police or animal control personnel, he could have been charged with animal cruelty. I suppose a country that has forgiven Michael Vick won't think this was a big deal. I do, and I am sure Seamus did too.
@Sammy - This story was released BY ROMNEY'S CAMPAIGN, not a tabloid. They were PROUD of his actions. Other than the puppy my mother bought for me from a breeder in 1961, every dog I have owned has been a rescue. Not that that has ANYTHING to do with Romney's idea of dog care.

He SHOULD have been charged with animal cruelty. During the last election, I repeatedly asked people in his campaign to explain why he would treat his dog that way....of course I was ignored. It amazes me how many people DON'T know about this story. There's a special kind of evil lurking inside someone who can do that to their family dog!!!!

About 20 years ago (the early 1990's) I took my dog to a young vet - he had recently opened a practice in the neighbourhood. He drove a pick-up truck and had a little corgi - a pleasant dog, very soft and no trouble.
He drove the dog in the back of the pick-up (no crate) and had it tied on a short rope. I cannot recall exactly how it happened, but the dog managed to jump out of the pick-up (not sure if it was moving) and hang itself on the side of the truck.
The dog lived ...and to my knowledge it was OK, but anyway, the point:
When confronted by this, his wife (who was also a vet) said: Its only a dog.
I stopped going to that vet shortly after.
That was 20 years ago, and I want to believe people have changed today. But when I read the above article, it tells me they haven't. If the car rolled in an accident - the dog would be a pancake. If the car stopped abruptly - the dog could have been thrown so hard against the door that it would break open - and again, dog is a pancake.
A 12 year old could work through the scenarios of risk - and deduce it would not be safe transport for anything - let alone an animal.
I honestly believe people will accept almost anything if its told to them from an authority figure.

a crate, affixed to a luggage rack, with a specially designed windshield?
while it seems pretty whack to me ... what is inherently cruel about it?
think about it ... if the dog had been cruelly traumatized by it - the Romney family would have learned a lesson from it - that they had effed up - and they would certainly not have offered the story up as a goofy PR bit.
so, the dog obviously was not harmed, and as a result, the Romney family blithely didn't see it as a bad thing and shared the story, oblivious to the backlash that would come.
Would I do it? HELLSno.... but is it inherently, cruel? Not neccesarily.
BUT ... Ima guess that the reason the dog was up top is b/c they had kids riding in the backety back of the station wagon. No seatbelts... heck no seats.
Different times....

If the dog was in an enclosed crate, and the crate was properly secured (I have no idea if it was or not), then it is an unorthodox, but not cruel, way to transport it.
If the crate was not enclosed or properly secured, then it is obviously a problem.
I do not like the man, but not for that reason.
Personally, I don't see how people are okay with using crates or boxes in the back of trucks, but it's a pretty common practice.

Who is Seamus? Oh! The dog.
People ride their dogs in the beds of pick up trucks all the time. The dogs are not in a carrier and often
not contained.
THAT should be illegal.

it quite is the 1st time I heard this tale. He sounds enormously merciless and fully non-worrying relating to the animal. no longer quite like the excellent relatives guy he's portraying as a presidental candidate.... deliver it to FOX information or PETA

And you believe tabloids...why? Why should we continue to hold a grudge? If you think the laws aren't tough enough, get out and lobby for tougher laws, or quit bitching. Some of us do have lives and can't worry about what someone else does.
And if you purchased from a pet store, do understand you supported abuse.
