  • Do I use "whoever" or "whomever" in this sentence?

    Consider the following sentence:

"I will give the prize to who(m)ever finishes first."

Is it correct to use "whoever" or "whomever"?

"I will give the prize to whomever" = indirect object

    vs.

    "Whoever finishes first" = subject

So when these two clauses are together, which is the correct word to use? Please provide not only the answer but the grammatical reason as to why it is correct, so that I can apply this to any sentence :)

  • Why can't I find the resistance of this resistor?

I am using one of those "learning" electronics kits with the breadboard and basic components. There are several built-in LED's that can be powered by connecting wires to them. Each LED also has a built-in resistor; it is impossible to use the LED without passing the current through said resistor. I want to find the resistance of that resistor, since the kit doesn't tell me.

I have a (working and accurate) multimeter, but when I connect it across the diode it always reads "1". This is what it normally displays when there is no current/full resistance. (It displays "1", not "1.00", so I know it is not a 1 ohm resistor). I am measuring it properly - the diode lights up during measurement.

I also tried measuring the resistance by connecting the LED in a very simple circuit and then measuring the voltage and current and using V=IR to find the resistance. I had no success. I tried three different circuits (1.5V, 3V and 4.5V DC battery source), and each one gave me very different resistance values for the resistor. What is going on? Is there a special type of resistor that changes resistance depending on the amount of voltage or current passing through it?

I am doing my math and measuring correctly, I've been doing successful calculations all day but this situation does not make sense to me.

  • What components should I use in this circuit?

In the past, I have constructed a "shocking device" from a disposable camera, using instructions I found online (there are many). The success of this project has inspired me to educate myself a little bit about electricity and circuits. I decided a fun project would be to construct a smaller and more efficient shocker circuit of my own from scratch, rather than pirating mutilated camera components. This brings me to my question; What are the best components to use?

I would assume the circuit to be very basic, I should just need a voltage source (one or two triple A batteries), a resistor or two, and a transformer to increase the voltage. However, in some schematics I found, a transistor and diode were used. Is this to convert the direct current from the battery to AC? If so, is this necessary for a simple little shocker device?

Also, if you have any ideas on what component ratings to consider, please offer your input. Anything helps. Output voltage should be 1000 to 2000 volts, and amperage should be very small since this doesn't actually need to power anything, just shock the victim (as a surprising prank, not a self-defense device! I don't want to knock them unconscious).

*For the safety-conscious, yes I am being safe. I will test output upon completion and of course ensure that amperage is far below harmful levels.

  • What is Voltage in regards to an electric circuit?

I need a little bit more than "the force that pushes electricity!"

I understand that voltage is the difference in charge from one location in a circuit to another. I also understand how it is relative to the ground of the circuit, or another specified part of the circuit.

What I do not understand is what tangible effect it has on the flow of electricity. A battery with higher voltage will make a lightbulb grow brighter. Why? Does the higher voltage cause the electrons to move faster? To move in higher quantities simultaneously?

In what way does having a higher voltage tangibly affect the flow of electrons in an electrical circuit?

  • What is an effective method of storing my files in "the cloud"?

I am in highschool and switch between parent's houses on a daily basis. I currently do not possess a flashdrive or effective portable media device. I am always finding that my essay, report, assignment etc. is on the computer at my other house! I can upload to google docs, but it is a real pain to upload every file, organize it in a folder, etc. Is there an easy way to just upload my files somewhere and have them accessible anywhere? Idealy, I'd like a system that would retain folder/directory structure... so maybe the website/application could monitor one folder (automatically or when I tell it to update), and upload any changes to a website/database. When I go on a different computer, all my folders and files would be downloaded and could then be updated and reuploaded from that computer. The changes would then be reflected on the original PC when i return. Hope that made sense, and that somebody can point me towards something effective... Thanks!

  • Does Scotch Tape conduct electricity or interfere with electrical circuits?

I was building a circuit, and at one point it stopped working completely. confused, I undid everything I had done since it last worked, including removing a large amount of scotch tape that was contacting both positive and negative leads. Other than that I made no changes to the circuit, I did not detect any bad contacts or wires, so the only thing that I can conclude is that the scotch tape was actually conducting electricity and shorting out my circuit. Oddly, very little information is on google about scotch tape being a conductor. Im guessing nobody is going to know, but I thought I'd ask anyway just in case.

  • Is Minecraft Survival Multiplayer Fun?

How do you interact with other players?

    Can you trade?

    Can you kill them?

    Can you steal?

What safeguards are in place to prevent stronger players from terrorizing people that have just joined?

    Bottom line:

Is it fun to play? This will determine if I buy the game or not, survival mode is my favorite and I want to be able to play with other people.

  • When to use masculine pronoun forms in front of French words?

So "ami(e)," whether masculine or feminine, is preceded by the masculine forms of "mon, son, ton," etc, because it begins with a vowel. If it is preceded by an adjective, does the possessive pronoun retain its form or revert to what it should be according to gender?

  • How can I learn about electricity/circuits/electronics?

I plan on teaching myself the basics of electronic circuits. I would like to learn about current, wattage and voltage and amperage and ohms and all that stuff, and also about electronic components - transistors, capacitors, etc. I am doing this so I can learn how to construct my own simple electronic devices, so I need more than just simple definitions of these types of terms, but I also need to know how to interpret specifications of each and predict their effects to use them effectively. What is a good resource to learn all this? I need something that explains the general concepts as well as the specifics. I would prefer: Ebook > website tutorial > hardback book

  • Red Dead Redemption or Uncharted 2? (PS3)?

I usually only buy games rated 9/10 or above by critics, these two looked good. Which would you recommend as my first PS3 game? I already have GTA 4 for my PC, I know that is similar to RDR. Uncharted 2 looked like a fun shooter as well. What do you guys think?

  • How can I get $20 online quickly?

I know there are many sites that pay money for doing "offers" and surveys. What is the best one with which I can make $20?

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    - Must not require me to recruit people.

    - Must not require me to purchase anything. Free trials are OK.

I would like to make the $20 in a couple days or so. If all these criteria can not possibly be met, let me know, but there are too many "get cash fast" sites out there for me to try them all out. Thanks in advance!

  • Calculate horizontal and vertical distance from angle and distance?

I have a starting coordinate point, an angle, and a distance. I need to find the horizontal and vertical distance independently. Er, stated differently... I have a right triangle. I know one of the angles and the length of the hypotenuse. How do I find the length of the sides? (A and B). What is the most efficient way to find this? I'm not sure to use sine, cosine, or whatever, I sort of get them but I haven't taken trig yet lol. Thanks

  • What is the best Sprint Phone to get this Christmas?

I am probably going to be using Sprint. There is the HTC EVO of course, which I am currently planning on getting, but I was just curious if anyone knew of a better Sprint phone that would be coming out before this coming Christmas. By better I mean higher megapixel camera, faster processor, etc. Must be a smartphone, must use android, must be 4G. I just don't want to go get my greedy little paws on a shiny new EVO and have an "EVO 2" come out the next day. Anyone know?

  • Best Verizon phone to get this Christmas?

I would like to know what the best phone available for Verizon will be this Christmas! Obviously probably a droid/android, but I have heard there are different versions. What is the "top of the line" phone, and what are any other phones that are worth noting, perhaps for features that the the best phone does not have? (E.G. better keyboard or something). I plan on getting the best, most expensive phone, but if there is something significantly better in one of the others, I will consider that as well.

P.S. a good keyboard is very important to me, I don't want to have to learn T9. If the touchscreen keyboard is decent, I can probably get used to it but a physical one is preferable, as long as it isn't a piece of junk like the keyboard on my friend's droid phone was. Thanks!

My gaming computer is not hooked up to the internet and won't be for a very long time. Is GTA 4 worth getting even if I can't play multiplayer? I know it will still be a great game without it, but I'd like to know how much I'm missing out on. Thanks!

  • Photoshop Wont Open due to Font Explosion?

Just installed 65,000 fonts. at once. Now photoshop wont open, I'm guessing it's because of all the new fonts? If I wait long enough, will it initialize, and if so, will this wait be necessary on every startup or just this one? If not, is there something I can do besides removing all the fonts because it took a long time to install them.
