  • Just curious for horse owners?

I have owned my QH for over 2 years and I had kept him at a full service barn where I was the only boarder. I'm curious how often other people go to barn to check on and say hi to thier horses.

He is at a new very fancy full care barn. Basically he is in heaven now.

I haven't been able to go every day because of all the snow we have had. Is this ok? How often does everyone else go?

  • Please tell me your thoughts on this?

    I will make this short:

I own a very very well behaved QH. He NEVER is pushy, never gets in my space, would never bite, kick. He is so good to me. Etc.... Anyway, he did not want to go into his stall yesterday and a man who usually does not handle him was the one putting him in stall, well, as soon as my horse realized there was no food in stall he started to back out. The man pushed his butt to push him back in stall and my horse double kicked out at him. The man said "thank god I can move fast cuz he would have got me in the head". I was in one way giggling then on the other side I'M HORRIFIED. I partly can't believe this perfectly behaved horse would do this. I do not allow any aggressive behavior at all when I am handling him. I thought he would know that means ALL HUMANS. Should I be worried that he actually acted like this? I don't know. Could it be not alot of riding lately and real cold weather? Thanks everyone! All answers are so helpful.

  • First day with hay bag/ slow feeder in stall?

I couldn't help but giggle a little because my horses 1st day with hay bag and he was pretty aggravated with it. Yah the holes are pretty small but not that small. He finished 1 flake pretty fast. So it can't be to bad. My question is: will he get used to eating from the bag? I would hate to see him aggravated everyday. I have never used one before so this is all new to me. He will get 2 loose flakes in am and pm. The hay bag will hold 2 flakes for during the day to prevent boredom. Thanks everyone! I can't go back and add anything because I am on my phone. :)

  • Can most horses be ridden without a bit?

I am curious because I have been riding my QH without a bit for about a month and for the most part there is no difference. If anything he seems happier and is going much better. We even went one a long trail ride yesterday and he was GREAT. The only regret I have is why I didn't go bitless a long time ago. This is my question: why couldn't all horses go bitless?

  • Does anyone know of a safe haynet / slow feeder for stall?

spoke with Vet today, she said to get a "slow feeder" for my horses stall. I looked up a slow feeder and they look like you would use them in a paddock not the stall. So I guess I am going to check out haynets. My question is : does anyone know a safe haynet? I did see one with great reviews but I forget the name.

It could have the word nibblers? It was like $70 . Which cost wise is fine if it means safety. Unless anyone knows of this thing called "slow feeder". Thanks everyone for your help. I hope I didn't forget anything because I don't know how to go back and add something once I post. :)

PS- Donald, the wizard and the rest of you crazies don't even bother answering. This is serious.

  • Not sure if I have this right - need opinions...?

I will make a long story short.

My QH will be spending the winter out. He will have a buddy that is his best friend with him. The two of them have been out all summer - all night. They often times will go into 1 of the 2 open stalls together. Anyway, my horse was stalled all last winter in a med. weight blanket. This year I was going to buy him a neck warmer to go with it. But, I am wondering if this is nessary. * the avarage temps here (mass) in dead of winter - 20 / 30 lows. Generally, it stays pretty mild. I just worry a little bit. It would kill me to hear hes COLD. lol. Seriously though, do you think med weight is

heavy enough? Neck warmer? I dont want him to be to hot either. Ugh.... Am I over thinking this? Lol.

I am posting from my phone so I hope I didnt forget anything because I don't know how to go back and add more. Also- my horse LOVES it outside and he's already getting his winter coat. I will not put a blanket on till its 30 or below.

Thanks so much everyone. Its so nice to have you all because the horse world is very small where I am.

  • What you all think about oral supplements? ?

I was considering trying smartflex sr. for my QH. He can be a little stiff in the morning after coming out of his stall but he is quickly worked out of it in the first 10 min of riding. I don't think its a big deal at all. Of course I want him to feel his best, thats why I was thinking about smartflex. The thing I am confused about is: the barn owner and Vet say oral supplements do not work. BUT almost all the reviews at smartpak say its unbelievable stuff. Works great etc... I dont know what to do. I dont want the BO to get upset because I am wasting my money on something that doesn't work, yet, I can't help but think by all the reviews that something in it must work. Well, I got some samples today. I'm just on the fence about this one. Thank you everyone. I dont know how to go back and edit anything after I post this so Thank You again! :)

  • What do you think about a bell on my cats collar? ?

I am not sure of this one - long story short: my cat, about 5 years old has been killing baby bunnys, birds, moles. Oh gosh, just about anything it can. So I bought her a collar with a bell to maybe end some of this killing. I put it on for the first time tonight and I'm not to sure shes liking it. Lol. Is it cruel for her to wear it? Will she have a harder time staying safe from other animals? Idk, I have never had to resort to this in my lifetime of owning cats. Also, since its summer she usually stays out all night. She will come in in the am and eat and sleep for a bit then off hunting... AGAIN. Thanks for everyones input!!

  • Does anyone know why birds ride along on horses backs?

I own a big Quarter Horse and when ever he is out in the pasture eating grass, little birds either hop along right with him or sit on his back. I know there has got to be a reason they do this. Unless they love him as much as I do. Lol. Does anyone know why? Thank you for the answers!

  • If anyone knows anything about bug check, pls help?

I will try too make long story short. My QH got hives this spring from bugs. Vet came, checked him and suggested using bug check. Of course I had it delivered to barn right away. After a couple weeks on supplement it seemed to be working. Yes, he still would get an occasional fly or what not. I would even find ticks on him that would be in his hair but not biting. Well, hes been on this for about a month. I full board him so the BO tells me yesterday that I should save my money. Maybe give it to him again in the fall. ??? Umm, I dont think thats the way this stuff works. Isnt it supposed to stay in their system continuously and thats how it works best? I am afraid to question ANYTHING she does. But, for once, I think Im right. Please, give me your thoughts on this. Thank You in advance xx

  • Why do I feel so guilty when I cant visit my horse?

Yesterday and today have been so busy that I havent gone down to farm to say hi to my horse. I pay for full board so I know all his basic needs are met but I feel so guilty. I am with him almost everyday. Its just I will have a day here and there that I cant get down to see him. Does anyone else ever feel like this? Also - he is out grazing all night so he can be alittle worn out during day. Thats the one thing I dont feel guilty about is, I know he doesnt need to be ridden everyday.
