I'm wondering if I should have children based on materal family heath issues.?
I'm male, 31 and no health problems other than childhood asthma. My mom, one of my aunts, my sister and a few cousins all have bipolar disorder. My Great grandma apparently committed suicide presumably due to mental illness as well. No known issues with anyone on my dads side of the family. I seemed to have dodged the bullet but have struggled with the decision to have kids. If my spouse is healthy, any idea on the chances of passing it on?
3 AnswersMental Health7 years agoMinnesota electrical code question GFCI?
I want to put two 15a branch circuits in a boathouse with 3 outlets apiece. According to code online it says that all outlets must be GFCI protected in a boathouse (wet) environment.
If I have a GFCI outlet as the first and the rest connected via the load terminals, is this sufficient to meet code?
I'm doing the wiring myself and a couple of phone calls to the inspector for a permit and these questions haven't been returned so I thought I'd ask here while I wait.
3 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)7 years ago1099-LTC medical tax question?
So I'm helping my grandma with her taxes and have a situation I haven't run into before.
She has a 1099-LTC (long term care insurance) income of 25k. Her medical expenses this year at the assisted living facility/pharmacy/doctor visits have run about 60k
Turbo tax has a section for this but they ask about "Costs of Qualified LTC Services".
I'm wondering if I input 25k there and then when filling out the medical expense deduction I should put in the remaining 35k.
Ugh!
2 AnswersOther - Taxes7 years agoLate Season Squirrel Hunting tips?
After deer and pheasant season this year, I decided to take up squirrel hunting to keep the hunting season going. By the way, I'm from southeast MN in the hill country.
After some early winter (December) success....I've noticed a dramatic slowdown in the number of squirrels I see.
Is it normal for late season squirrel hunting to
1. Notice that the squirrels are almost dead silent now that snow and cold temps (under 20 degrees daytime) are here?
Seems like at first I was able to listen for them and walk in their general direction earlier, now I think I've heard one bark in the last 3 times I've been out.
2. Morning is the only time to go out. After 1pm they all seem to disappear where early in the season they were out throughout the day (mostly at dawn and dusk though). Now after 1pm I rarely see any. is this normal?
I've also noticed that sitting seems to be the best method to see them instead of walking. With the snow being as crunchy as it is you cant sneak up on anything, is that always the case for late season?
Thanks for the tips fellas, looking forward to many more years of squirrel hunting, found it to be so much fun this year I'm actually looking forward to it again next year more than anything else!
2 AnswersHunting8 years agoDuck hunting on mississippi river between WI and MN?
If I have a duck hunting license from MN, can I hunt both sides of the Mississippi river between MN and WI?
Its considered a fishing boundry area, wondering if duck hunting works the same way, can't seem to find much after a quick look through the MN regulations. This would be my first time duck hunting ( and my cousins first time who lives on the WI side of the river).
1 AnswerHunting9 years agoHave you been underpaid and what did you do to get a raise?
If you were ever underpaid what did you do?
Lately I've been looking at job postings and feeling that I'm underpaid by at least 25%. I've always gotten great reviews, small bumps in pay, and working as a consultant I always hit my billable goal or exceed it.
Problem is I really like the job and the company I work for. In addition to that I work in a fairly small area so jobs in this pay range are somewhat hard to come by. However in the last 6 months I've been keeping an eye on the job ad's and it seems like I'm underpaid.
So, have you ever had to approach your boss about a substantial raise and how did you do it (like 20-40%). I was thinking if basically just printing off some of the want ad's with their advertised pay coupled with the fact that I'm just about to finish up some brand new certifications (waiting until after I finish them) to bring this up.
3 AnswersPersonal Finance9 years agoWould you apply for a new job if it paid more?
I was hired in 2009 at a company (after being laid off for approx 5 months). I've always felt that they got me on the cheap because of the recession and in the last 6 months or so I've seen several of our competitors hiring and listing salary ranges far above mine.
While I've finally gotten the perks the other employees have my salary has not risen much (about 10% in the last 3 years, I figured its still discounted about 25% maybe even a bit more). The last issue is the commute which is about 40 miles each way.
The good thing is I like my job, the people that I work with and really don't want to change. They also finally gave me a company car (which everyone else got when they were hired, so I went about 2 years without) so thats cut my commuting expenses down to a minimal amount other than the time. My two reviews have been excellent, the boss has no issues with my work and my customers like me. However a company in town (I'd have about a 4 mile commute each way) is hiring for the same position, money chasing has never seemed to me to be a good idea but in this case it might be worth it.
Any thoughts on what I should do, again I wouldnt hesitate to jump at it if I didnt like the job/people I work with but money pays the bills. Has anyone been in this situation, what did you do.
5 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment9 years agoHelp identifying bird black with orange bill in MN?
My girlfriend and I were out on the river near Winona, MN thursday night and saw a jet black bird with a blaze orange bill. It was in the water so we figured it must be a duck of some kind but have not been able to identify it.
Any ideas what it might be? I spend a lot of time outdoors and cannot recall seeing anything like it. About the size of a blue wing teal I'd estimate. Thanks!
Birds9 years agoPlumbing question: need a 2 inch slip joint nut?
Apparently this is the holy grail of plumbing. I've been to Ace/Menards/Fleet Farm and none of the local places carry this. The trap under my kitchen sink had a small leak and I found a hairline crack in the slip joint nut. Anyone know where I can find a replacement?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs9 years agoCan yahoo mobile IM Microsoft Lync clients?
I've got yahoo messenger for blackberry (and android on my home phone) and I'm trying to add Microsoft Lync contacts. Is this possible?
I cant find anything either way, called Microsoft and they said Lync is compatible with Yahoo desktop but they weren't sure about mobile clients. Talked with Yahoo support and they pointed the finger to blackberry. Lots of finger pointing, no solutions.
Please Help!

Dumb question but want to make sure my boat doesnt sink :)
I'm measuring the internal diameter of my livewell discharge hose to be 1 1/8th inches while the t connector is only 1 inch. Is the hose diameter normally a size larger or has it streched from being on that fitting for the last 20 years?
The intake hose measures 3/4 and the fitting is a 3/4" t connector which is why I'm asking. Either way it'll be clamped off, just want to make sure I order the right size. thanks!

When i fill it back up is there anything special i need to do? I use a motive products brake bleeder, can I use that to refill the system? Thanks.
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoLeft a package of frozen bacon out overnight (8hrs). Still safe to eat?
So i received 3lbs of frozen bacon from my parents but got home late, forgot to put it in the freezer and it ended up on my counter top overnight. Total time out was about 8 hrs @ 65 degrees.
Normally I think I'd toss it but its fresh from a meat market, frankly its the best bacon in the world so I'd absolutely hate to waste it. The package was frozen and the bacon is vacuum sealed.
5 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade ago2 stroke outboard oil and gas mix over the winter?
This is the first winter I've owned a two stroke engine (outboard for a boat).
Will the gas and oil mix still be safe to use or should I find a way to drain the tank?
Last fall it was mixed (on a mechanics recommendation) with a very slightly higher percentage of oil and about 25% more stabilizer then called for (due to the 7 month storage). I'm just wondering how well the oil stays suspended in the gas and if I need to either find a way to drain it or just agitate the mixture before running it?
Thanks!
5 AnswersBoats & Boating1 decade agoQuestion about cost basis of mutual fund gift?
My parents purchased mutual funds for me as a kid. I finally had to sell some of them and found out the company doesn't not do any tracking of cost basis whatsoever.
Since our family moved around quite a bit these records were either tossed out accidentally or misplaced because we cannot find them anywhere and calling Pioneer made no difference. I was flat out told by two different reps that they could not get any of the purchase records.
What I'm wondering is since the mutual fund was setup as a UGMA (Uniform Gift to Minor's Act) can I used the fund price on the day of my 18th birthday as my cost basis since I become the owner of the account on that day?
If not are there any recommendations as to what I should use.
1 AnswerOther - Taxes1 decade agoSelling in the money Covered Call options?
Several stocks I follow have got me interested in options.
I've noticed that several stock call options seem to sell for more then the actual stock is worth.
For instance abc company is trading at 30 dollars and the feb 25 call option is currently going for $6.50.
Is there something I'm not reading right here? It would seem you could do a buy/write and pocket 1.5 in premium money. Even if for some reason your call was not assigned and expired worthless you could write more calls or sell the stock and pocket the profit.
What am I missing here, I can't believe that it would be so easy. Thanks!
3 AnswersInvesting1 decade agoQuestion about VLAN and trunking between switch and router?
I've got a simple little network I need to setup that is going to have a router and a switch + 3 wireless access points.
The internal network is going to be 192.168.20.1 (router interface is assigned that address). I was going to assign 192.168.20.2 to the switch and then .3 .4 .5 to the wireless ap's.
The WAP's will have a default gateway of 192.168.20.1. Will they need trunk ports also?
Since there is only one vlan needed for this network can I just plug the router into say port 24 on the switch without setting up trunking? Is it best practice to setup a trunk port anyway even with only one vlan?
Thanks!
1 AnswerComputer Networking1 decade agoTax deductions for mileage as a contractor?
I'm wondering if I can deduct my daily drive as a contractor. I work as a computer consultant for Company A. Company B contracts for employees through company A. So in effect I travel to a client site every day for work in addition to traveling throughout the metro area to client sites.
It's splitting hairs but I do work out of any of Company B's 20+ offices in the midwest (from time to time though mainly at 1 particular site 90% of the time).
Is my daily drive deductable?
