  • Please help me work out this percentage - I know the answer but not how I got there!?

    Dear mathematicians/ brainboxes.

I need to work out whether males (M) or females (F) have the better response rate.

Females: out of 150,000, 5.1% or 7,600 responded to the appeal

Males: out of 50,000, 4.8% or 2,400 responded

I feel as though M had the better response rate as there was less of them, and when scaled to the same volume of F who were asked they would actually have more respondents however I do not know how to prove this, or if indeed it is true.

Please could someone who knows how to work this out help!

Thank you very much and please ask if you require more details!

  • How can I ask our housemate to stop wasting utilities without causing arguement?

I live in a house with 3 other students. 3 of us have lived together for 18 months. Unfortunately the other resident had to leave at Christmas, so we ended up with another new housemate. She is amicable and will stop and chat to us, but the huge problem is that she constantly has the heating on and uses so much hot water. She'll get up and put the heating on through the night and when we are at uni, then it'll be on for up to 16 hours a day til we realise and turn it off. The rest of us wrap up in jumpers and blankets when it's cold! Also she'll have up to 1 bath and two showers A DAY, where the rest of us shower each day! Our gas and electric soared from £63 per two months each, to £137 each per two months. I know we (the other 3) have used a little more from extra cooking, putting on the heating to dry clothes and watching more tv, but no way have we over doubled it.

Obviously we're students and us 3 simply cannot afford to pay so much every 2 months, as we try our best to save water, heating etc. This girl is loaded (going on cruises, buying £400 pairs of shoes etc) so thinks nothing of spending that much, and probably has no concept of being wasteful and doesn't think how itmay affect us.

We want to stop it but don't know how to confront her without her thinking we're being rude or picky or bossy etc, especially as we have to live with her for another 18 months!

    Please help

  • Cooking chicken in tomato sauce?

    Hello,

I am cooking for my boyfriend tonight for the first time, and am making chicken breast in a tomato sauce. I know how to make the sauce, with onion, tomato, garlic, herbs etc but I was wondering if I should cook the chicken in the oven and then just cover it in sauce or if there is a way I can cook the chicken and sauce together in the oven so it marinates. How should I do this?

    Thankyou

  • Help me remember an old PS1 game !!!?

All I can remember is it was 4 players in an arena and 1 character was called Lee, another possibly Aiden or something. There were loads to choose from and lots of different arenas. You had to hide behind things to defend yourself and threw things like logs to injure other players. It wasn't a particularly adult game but I played it as a kid and I really want to play it again. Every little helps, thank you!!

  • What legal right do I have to see my half brother?

Without the detailed story, I am 18 years old and have a ten month old half brother (by my dad). Me and my dad had a bit of a falling out but our relationship is getting back on track. I have looked after my little brother before and it's been fine. Suddenly my dad's partner has decided I can't see my brother for no good reason that she can give. She has also been making up malicious lies about me which is turning my family against me. This has been going on for months and I've tried all means of talking and pleading but she won't give in. Not seeing my brother is killing me so I'd like to know if I have any legal right to see him?

    Thank you

It sounds like the word 'roses' is said a lot and stresses on the song but as i couldnt hear properly maybe not... and the words 'i love you' were also in the chorus. the backing seemed to be only a piano/keyboard, male voice and a powerful sounding song... rock/classic/ maybe... apologies for the vagueness but please help.

  • Not sure which course to do - Keele Uni?

I originally appled to do English and Criminology but then changed to English and Marketing after deciding criminology was too specific and even through I was 'interested' in crime, it wasn't what I wanted to focus my life on. Now I'm not sure about doing marketing as, although I like it in principle, the modules don't 100% appeal to me.

At Keele, you have to do a dual honours with English in it (i.e. it can't be done as a single subject). I don't know what to do, I've looked at the other subject options and none particularly stand out, even though I'm looking forward to some of the 'elective' modules I can do such as Russian. It's a complex system.

Any advice, questions I should ask myself etc is very welcome.

    also:

    - I have no idea what I want to do in the future

    - my a-levels were English Combined, Sociology and Law

    - I only want to go to Keele - I have my heart set on it

  • Aged 20, 3 children by three different fathers ...?

My cousin's best friend is a single mother of 20 years old, she has 3 girls aged under 3 and one of them has just been found to be deaf to which her mothers response was 'aw she looks well cute with pink and purple hearing aids'.

She spends ALL of her money on going out at the weekend and weeknights, spending more time getting drunk with her friends than her children and her children live with her mother who she expects to pay for everything and she is currently living with my cousin at my grandma's (who doesn't have the heart to say no) and eating her food, using her electricity etc.

the one child of hers I have met is nearly two and can not walk or speak yet and doesn't even cry when she has a dirty nappy.

I hate to see children being cared for so poorly and although she has had some meetings with a social worker she never seems to care or make a concerted effort to get her children back.

I want to make their lives better as they are all beautiful children, but do you think its worth intervening and how should I ? Also what leads people to be such bad parents?

  • Ebay vouchers - used but full amount withdrawn from PayPal?

I had eBay vouchers offering money off purchases and I used these codes when I checked out and on the billing page it showed the reduced amount, and the vouchers had been taken off the page where I was offered them.

However the full amount for the items has been withdrawn for my PayPal account.

Is this normal and if so how do the vouchers work, or if not how do I rectify this?

  • My mum's boyfriend is *constantly* nagging...?

I'm so sick of his nagging, its driving me mad and really upsets me.

It's main theme is that I'm "idle".

I have just finished college and am now off until I start uni at the beginning of September. Before I left I had lots of college work to do so that was ok, but now I am constantly being nagged for being lazy.

I've worked really hard for college and want to prepare for uni, I 'm always helpful and do as I am asked. I've applied for every suitable job going, but this isn't good enough for him and I can't be blamed that no one offers me a job. I don't see how I can try anymore. He moans that all I do is 'sit around reading and being lazy'.

My mum understands me and says I do all I can to find work and that if I'm asked to help out with household chores I do, and I ask what I can do to help. Still this isn't good enough and when I ask what he wants me to do all he says is 'I dont know' rather than making a constructive suggestion.

My mum and him constantly argue about it and he won't listen, and now I feel upset because it's my fault they're arguing and I dont want my mum to be upset.

I'm pretty rubbish at talking to them about it without getting hysterical either.

So how can I make him see that I try, and get him to leave me alone?

  • My Dad hasn't spoken to me for 6 months and now he says we need to 'sort things out'...?

This is a very complicated story but to be brief, on the 10th December I told my dad that my boyfriend was Asian (My family are white) and he went ballistic. In his own words, he 'hadn't brought me into this world to have brown babies' and said I was never welcome in his house again (although I do live with my mum).

I saw him occasionally during that period and he put on a front at family events, as my grandad's health is deteriorating and neither of us wanted him to know, and I also wanted to see my half brother who was born just a week after this.

I stood by my decision, not because I was madly in love with this guy or anything, though we have since split up (funily enough, nothing to do with either of our cultures/skin colours/ ethnicity.. whatever, we just grew apart and wanted different things), but because I couldn't believe that my dad would throw 18 years of our relationship away over this, and wouldn't want to see his daughter happy and how he behaved, and I'm also quite independent and strong minded.

Since then, he has turned his back on me in the street, said to my mum 'I'm not paying towards her university fee's, she's not my daughter', cancelled my holiday which he was paying for for me, and wrote me a note to tell me this, signing it with his name rather than dad, sent back all my possessions I had at his house, and also all the fathers day, christmas and birthday cards I'd sent to him.

I was talking to my gran the other day about how I wouldn't end up going to university as dad wasn't contributing to it, and she asked him if he would be giving the money which he had saved for putting me through uni, to which he replied 'I don't know'.

He then texted me yesterday asking if I was free on Tuesday morning as He thinks 'we need to sort things out'.

I am happy to do this but I have no idea what to say, as I want him to know how I feel about how he treated me and that I can't just forgive his actions because what sort of a dad would act like that (we had been very close prior to this), but I also do want to restore our relationship and see more of my brother.

Any advice on what to say or how to word my feelings?

  • Getting my hands on a pair of boots from a Premiership footballer... (preferably worn..) ?

For his birthday my boyfriend (football obsessed!) has told me he would love some of this players football boots.

I'm not sure if he means the same as the ones he wears or actually worn by him.

The football team is one of the smaller clubs in the league so I can't see them being in much demand but does anyone know how I should go about trying to get my hands on some...

    Thank you

when i was about 3 or 4 so maybe 14 years ago.

possibly a brother and sister and something to do with a green goblin and a bus stop or magical equivalent. the girl was been kept a dungeon or kitchen and the boy came and rescued her and they escaped on a magic flying carpet or something.

I cant for the life of me think of the name .. any idea's anyone?

and also i think it was part of the same book (which had 3 stories in possibly) where some toys came alive at night and they had like a house made of children's bricks or possibly a dolls house and they had adventures at night.

  • The Lady Of Shalott [-Tennyson] symbol of Lancelot's sword... read for more details please.?

For my English coursework I have to 'transform' The Lady Of Shalott. I have turned it into a modern day text with Lancelot driving a car instead of riding a horse.

    In the line

"And from his blazon'd baldric slung

    A mighty silver bugle hung"

I have understood this to represent a symbol for his manhood and in turn the Lady's sexual repression [that she notices this about him].

So, I need to think of a modern day representation for this symbol of his manhood

    any idea's ... thankyou :)
