  • Should I take AP Stat or pre-calculus my senior year?

I'm a junior now, I'm taking Algebra II and I have a 102 in it. I don't have time to take pre-calc AND AP Stat next year, so which should I choose? Which looks better to colleges?

I'm planning to major in music, so math shouldn't be a huge thing that colleges are looking at (and I also don't really care about learning anything, I am simply taking math courses for the purpose of checking the block) but if I end up applying to a university like, say, Northwestern, what would be the better choice?

    Thank you!

  • Difficult/showy romantic or 20th century piano works?

I'm looking for music for a recital - I've got a Bach Prelude and Fugue, a Beethoven Sonata, two Chopin Nocturnes, and Rachmaninoff Elegie Op. 3 No. 2.

Do you have any suggestions of pieces that display great virtuosic technique, such as the Liszt concert etudes or Saint-Saens etudes?

Late romantic/early 20th century would be great.

  • PIANO: which is harder/more audience appeal:Saint-Saens' second concerto or Rachmaninoff's second?

Which of the two (first movements only) would have a stronger chance of winning a high school concerto competition? There are three judges, and as the competition is open to all instruments, at least two of the three judges will NOT be pianists. Which, in your opinion, is more audience appealing, and which is harder?

Also, any tips for playing either of those to make them really polished?

  • PIANISTS - know any great obscure 20th/21st cent. composers such as Liebermann?

I'm interested in obscure 20th composers such as Lowell Liebermann and York Bowen. Do you have any suggestions for repertoire (or just suggestions of composers to check out) by other 20th/21st century composers?

    Preferably high-level difficulty. Thanks. :)

  • Laptop died, now Windows won't start up?

About a week ago, my Acer Aspire Series 3000 laptop died. I turned it back on, and it said that Windows hadn't closed properly, and gave me 5 options (safe mode, safe mode with something..., another safe mode one, last known good configuration, and start Windows normally. Well I tried all 5 options, and each time, it went to the page that says Windows before it turns on, then turns off, comes back on again in a few seconds, and give me those 5 options again. I eventually just let my computer die again because I couldn't even turn it off. I just tried that again, a week later, and same thing...what do I do?!?!

  • CELLISTS! I'm looking for some great obscure repertoire...suggestions?

The title says it all - I'm looking for some cello music, either solo cello or cello and piano, that isn't the Bach Suites or the Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata. 20th century is what I'm really looking for, but anything that you want to suggest is great too! Thanks!

  • Pianists - technical help - fast arpeggios and inversions, scales, cadenza...(Saint-Saen's Piano Concerto 2)?

I am working on the first movement of Saint-Saen's second piano concerto for two competitions. I have just over two months until the first one. Do you have any tips for really internalizing and being comfortable with all of the 32nd note runs, arpeggios, and scales?

Also, in the part with all the octaves back and forth between the two hands, how can I be more comfortable with these octaves? (It's not a matter of hand size, I can reach a 10th, almost 11th, but my options are still only 1 and 5 or 1 and 4, so I'm just not really quite comfortable with them.)

Any suggestions for ways to practice, or exercises to help, are appreciated. I feel like I'm just kind of running through all the difficult parts (as well as the not difficult, haha), and I want to (and need to) get this piece really secure.

    Thank you SO MUCH!

  • Choosing a piano concerto?

I'm trying to choose a piano concerto for two competitions, one in June and one in October. For the one in June, it can not be a slow movement, and for October, I have a time limit of 12 minutes. I want to use the same concerto for both competitions. I had chosen Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major, mvmt 2, but it is obviously a slow movement so that won't work. My top choice as of right now is Saint-Saens's Piano Concerto no. 2 in G minor, mvmt 1. I want something that is possibly somewhat virtuous, but still melodic. Any suggestions of concerti for me to listen to?

  • Singing question - shaky middle range?

I'm a 2nd soprano in a choir. I am one of the musically strongest singers in that section, and I want to improve my tone so that I can help lead the section. My range is from F-sharp below middle C to the A almost 2 octaves above middle C, but there's an area in the middle that is really shaky - from C-sharp an octave above middle C to the eflat/e above that. I can sing it really quietly, or if I sing it loud enough, I can sometimes get a decent tone, but if I don't support it enough, my voice kinda cracks and shakes. Any tips on improving this range? and any other tips on strengthening my voice in general so that I can be a stronger singer?

  • Help choosing piano repertoire?

I'm choosing music for MTNA for next fall - the requirements are 2 different time periods (which I already have, but I prefer at least 3), plus a concerto movement. I have a 25 minute limit, not including the concerto. The pieces I have chosen so far are:

Muzio Clementi - Sonata in B minor, Op. 40, No. 2, first movement (1802)

    Franz Schubert - Impromptu in F minor, Op. 142, No. 1 (1827)

Charles T. Griffes - Scherzo (from Fantasy pieces) Op. 6, No. 3 (1915)

And the concerto is the second movement of Ravel's G major piano concerto.

I need one more piece, preferably around 5 minutes long? Either baroque, late romantic, or later 20th century. I've been thinking about Brahms, possibly. Any suggestions?

  • Cello orchestra excerpts help?

I'm auditioning for an orchestra on Tuesday and I really need help working on the audition music.

    Tips on practicing these excerpts?

    Help particularly with 2a, 5, and 6.

    http://www.wilmingtonsymphony.org/Musicians/AudMus...

And also, in 2a, for example, where it skips a lot of measures to a different passage, do I stop and wait for the judge to tell me to continue at the next passage or keep going?

  • Pianists - sheet music suggestions?

I'm looking for sheet music. I want to order a bunch of sheet music, such as anthologies, or complete works by a certain composer, but I don't really know how to search for anthologies on the internet without a publisher/composer in mind. Suggestions of publishers?

For an idea of what level I am, here's what I'm working on:

-Faschingsschwank Aus Wien (all five movements) by Robert Schumann

-Sonata in B minor, Op. 40, No. 2 (mvmt 1) by Muzio Clementi

-Danza del gaucho matrero (3rd mvmt of Danzas Argentinas) by Alberto Ginastera

Links to music at that level or above are appreciated! Thanks!

-Faschingsschwank Aus Wien (all five movements) by Robert Schumann

-Sonata in B minor, Op. 40, No. 2 (mvmt 1) by Muzio Clementi

  • Really bad sunburn....I need it to be gone in 6 days!?

Okay, so the other day I was outside, wearing a tank top, for 6 hours, and I got a really bad surn burn. I've got a Concerto Performance (I'm the soloist!) on Sunday and my dress will definitely show the bright red where the shirt wasn't and the white where it was. It's also very painful...hurts to take off/put on a shirt. I've used some Aloe, any other suggestions?

  • Haydn piano concerto...?

Okay, I'm wondering which of these to concerto movements are harder and what most people like better. So if you could tell me whether you like the 1st of 3rd movement better AND which you think is harder, that'd be awesome.

  • Tips on tutoring piano?

I'm 14, and I want to tutor beginning piano students. Do you have any ideas on how to get students, how much to charge, etc.? Am I too young? I don't have a problem with how well I can play/teach, but I don't know whether people would think that a 14 year old is worth paying (regardless of the fact that I can play better than some teachers). Thanks a bunch!
