18 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoFree will vs. Determinism, which is it?
If we have free will, then why couldn't God have just given us the option to always freely choose the good. E.g. Instead of the option to take a bribe or not, why don't we only have the option between two seemingly good things, e.g. a root beer float and a steak dinner? If the opposite is true, that we are determined, why is there evil in the world? Why couldn't God have determined us to always choose the good? If we are determined and he doesn't, then there is no God. (according to the problem of evil).
Your thoughts, please?
I am analyzing the problem of evil and problems for and against it. I can go either way, i.e. I can choose to say we don't have free will or that we are determined. I am not sure which it is though. I personally think that our environment shapes us through classical conditioning, but I also think that if we are conscious of our behaviors that are shaped by our environment, we have the will to choose to change them through operant conditioning. However, if we do become aware of our determined behaviors and use operant conditioning to change them to what we "want," who is to say what we "want" isn't also a result of environmental conditioning? Therefore, I want to say that compatabilism is possible, but I am obviously leaning more towards hard determinism. However, it is unsettling thinking that we might not have free will.
Help. please email me if you would like to have a friendly philosophical discourse.

7 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoAcid versus mushrooms?
Ok, so I have eaten mushrooms plenty of times. I've only had one bad trip, but I'd eat them again. I'm wondering can you control the trip on acid? I can on mushrooms (besides the one bad trip on which I happened to be extremely drunk). What are you experiences? Compare acid to mushrooms. What are the real differences? FYI- I usually only eat a half eighth of shrooms. How many hits of acid should I take?

I am writing a ten page philosophy paper, and I need someone to read it to make sure it flows well and is understandable. The topic is Chomsky's universal grammar and Karl Popper's theory of science. I need a lay intelligent person to be able to understand the argument I am trying to convey.

2 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agowhat is the moral theory in which a person loses their dignity?
So to have dignity in this theory is to know the moral requirements and to follow them. Therefore, if a person knows what is morally required but chooses to disregard it, they lose their dignity. Who is the theorist?
3 AnswersPhilosophy1 decade agoDo people "want what they can't have" because of the Premack Principle?
With the premack principle you can use a higher probability behavior to reinforce a lower probability behavior. Is it because we want that lower probability response that keeps us "wanting what we can't have?" Or is it a control thing?

It is a cultural art form that has been practiced for many years. However, at the same time, animals are being tortured and left for dead. Would it be ethical to sacrifice a cultural tradition which has been practiced for many years for the sake of the animals? Why? why not?
