For those who A) accept evolution as a fact and B) are Jewish or Christian...?
Q: How do you reconcile your acceptance of evolution with your religious faith? More specifically:
If the story of Adam and Eve is to be taken not as historical fact but an allegory to help us understand our relationship with God, then there was no original sin.
If there was no original sin, then we do not need to be redeemed.
If we don't need to be redeemed, then Jesus didn't need to be sacrificed.
This is, in my opinion, the very source of the fundamentalist outcry against evolution. And from this perspective, it's quite understandable.
My question is really quite specific, then. How indeed ARE evolution and Judeo-Christian faith reconcilable?
A significant number of Christians state that evolution poses no threat to their religious beliefs; rather they incorporate God into the process of evolution. But this question regarding original sin, to my way of thinking, would be a huge hurdle. Your thoughts?
