  • Pipe flow calculations?

Looking for a quick way to estimate pipe flow for a cooling tower. 8 inch supply line, 0.5MPa at the pump. I know that my pump is capable of 1600 GPM, but I don't think I'm running near that. I'm trying to size a filter without breaking the bank.

  • Excel Pivot Table question?

I have a rather large excel spreadsheet, used to track maintenance downtime on my facilities equipment. When I create the pivot table, I use the Month as a column header, but it lists each day that an incident occured as a separate month, so I have 15 or so listings for January instead of a single column with the totals for january.

  • Wasted Energy Solution?

I had an epiphany recently while watching a television show on History or some such talking about the history drag racing, and it got to the use of the turbo- and supercharger as a means of boosting the power of the motor of any given vehicle. The turbo, in particular, uses exhaust air pressure to turn a small turbine, basically acting as an air compressor for the intake to force more air into the engine. My manufacturing facility currently has four blowers that vent to the exterior of the building, all from oven burners. What if we used the theory of the car's turbo, but instead of connecting it to an air compressor, we use a small ram air generator, instead. I have been searching on the internet, but I don't think that I am asking the right questions in my search. Is there anyone here that might know of a product such as I have described for an industrial application? All serious answers. I am a maintenance technician, and I get tired of hearing how the company is blowing money, in this case literally, so I thought I would look into it. The system we use is very innefficient, and the air that blows out the stack is literally a waste of energy. All informed, intelligent answers welcome and appreciated.

  • What's the point of Auburn firing Tony Franklin?

What is the point of firing Tony Franklin, the master of the spread (it worked well at Troy, and other teams have made great use of it) because the spread isn't working, then KEEP THE SPREAD OFFENSE!? Why doesn't Auburn go back to power, smash-mouth football, which has worked for years, spend a couple of seasons recruiting for a spread offense, then spend a couple of years practicing the spread offense, and work it into your system. Every time Auburn tries to pound the football up the middle, it works. What's wrong with that?

  • Why are we not using Hoover dam?

I know that no branch of the governent is allowed to show a profit (why that is i can't get a straight answer), but why are we not utilizing hoover dam as a resource for electrical power. It can almost single handedly power Arizona, New Mexico, southern California and Nevada, yet it is only on the 'reserve' grid. Does this mean that when California was having "rolling Blackouts", that they didn't use it then? Why not crank up Hoover to full capacity, then use any "profit" to fund all of the federal social welfare programs in the southwest and California. This would allow the tax money that funds these to be put to other productive uses.

  • How did the rankings change?

I knew that ESPN was in the tank for USC, but how in the world did their rank pass Georgia when they didn't even play this weekend?

  • Why can't a political poll give us a straight answer?

Whenever you see a poll on television, they always tell you "margin of error +/- x%. How can you have a margin of error? Does this mean that the people asking the questions screwed up? Why can't you just tell us the response to the question? If the people lied on the survey, that is not something that you are responsible for, is it? What those numbers in the poll tell me, when I see a MOE is that you are pulling this data out of your rear.

  • How can we change ESPN?

I really don't like ESPN, mostly because the place is full of sportscasters that spend way to much time coming up with things like "Call me butter, cause I'm on a roll!". I hate that the coverage is always so impersonal, and they hate the SEC (I could be biased, but I'm an Auburn fan). They are still singing the praises of teams like USC and Michigan, and I don't even know how michigan managed to get ranked again.

I would much rather listen to a football game on the radio than watch it, and fortunately for me, I can get radio coverage for Auburn, Alabama and Georgia. I love to listen to larry Munson(only working part time after calling Georgia games for 30 or so years) and Eli Gould for Alabama because they are just EXCITED about Dawg and Tide (respectively) football. TV announcers just want to see a good game, but they don't care who wins.

Can't we do something to bring back the personal touch to TV announcing?

  • What are some advantages of an external versus internal frame back pack (or the other way around)?

My wife and I have recently decided to take up hiking after going to amicalola falls state park in North Georgia. We went to the "hike Inn" near the park, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only backpacking experience I've had was while I was in the military, and that was limited, but I had an issue LC-1 A.L.I.C.E. pack, with an external frame, and I don't think it fit me well, althgouh the basic design of the external frame has been around for a very long time, and has been tried in nearly every outdoor condition, I am thinking that that particular one just didn't fit me. Any thoughts? Preffereably those that have used both, although all answers are appreciated.

  • Ammunition Question?

This is going to sound like I'm stupid, but I'm going to ask it anyway.

I do a good deal of shooting, I currently own a Remington 700 BDL .30-06, and a Winchester Model 70 Carbine .243Win. I also have, in my possesion a Marlin Model 60 .22LR and a Marlin 336C .35 Remington. I was also a 2nd Award Expert in the Marine Corps. Having said that. Can anyone tell me what a 'boat tail' means when applied to rifle cartridges? I know that it is the shape of the rear of the bullet, but no one can tell me how that affects it's performance. Answers are great, references are better. Thank you.

  • My fellow Americans, are yououtraged at Congresswoman Pelosi?

Who in the world does Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democratic Representative from California, think she is? Is she aware that it is neither her responsibility, nor within her authority, to attempt to make foreign policy for the United States? That power lies only with the President and the Secretary of State, in that order. Am I the only one that feels she went and showed her butt to the entire world?

  • KMS Bismark Vs. USS North Carolina?

Much ado is made about the German battleship Bismark defeating the Pride of the British Navy, the battlecruiser HMS Hood. There were vast differences between those two ships. The Bismark had the Hood outgunned, outarmored, outmaneuvered, and generally outclassed. The other striking fact is the nearly 20 year age difference between the two. Had the KMS Bismark come up against a contemporary, for example, the USS North Carolina, would the outcome have been different? The North Carolina had nine 16 inch guns as opposed to eight 14 inch guns, which gave it a rancge advantage, and the guns could be loaded aimed and fired just as fast as the Bismark. It was at least as accurate as the Bismark, and at least as heavily armored. Also the Norht Carolina had a great deal more speed than the Bismark, nearly 3 knots (a lot of speed when you are talking about 50K+ ton ships). What say you?

  • Making fun of Steve Spurier?

Did anyone else think it hilarious that after Auburn beat South Carolina, the Tigers band could be heard in the background playing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" (more commonly known in the SEC as the Georgia Bulldogs fight song), just to mess with coach Steve Spurier?

  • Who else can't stand Kirk Herbstreit on ESPN?

It has nothing to do with him having played for OSU. But I hate the fact that he has to justify thinking that OSU will win, he can't just say that OSU will forever be his team. I would have more respect for him if he did.

Why do we have to have analysts call the games? How hard is it to find fans that can analyze? ESPN should tune in to a few of the local radio broadcasts (especially Larry Munson for GA and Eli Gould for AL) and see how a game should be called.

  • Who else thinks that the weighting of a schedule is bogus?

Have you ever noticed that OSU, Texas, and USC usually stomp on every member of their conference?

When was the last time you saw a true blowout between too SEC teams? I mean, come on, even Vanderbilt isn't that bad, and they no longer offer athletic scholarships!!

I personally think that you should actually weight the games different based on different conferences. The SEC is by far (debateable, I know) the toughest conference in the NCAA, but unless they have a blow-out, run-up-the-score kind of game, they get absolutely NOTHING from the analysts or the rankin polls. What the f***! Why does ESPN HATE the SEC? is it because they don't have one outstanding player (Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Vince Young), or is it because they are just a bunch of Dumb *** rednecks, and think that they are bad representatives of America?

    By the way.....

  • Anyone know when the EA-6B Prowler will be retired?

I served with VMAQ-3 from 1997 until 2001. I am trying to find out when the F/A18G will be put into service, but I can't seem to find anything. Anyone in the Prowler community, Navy or Marines, heard anything about it?
