  • catholics- why does your version of the bible have different 10 commandments?

In the Catholic bible the ten commandments are different. They have removed the rule about no graven images. I am not trying to cause an argument here, I promise. We were talking about this over lunch today and none of us were sure what the official answer is.

  • When Christians die, do they immediately go to Heaven?

I have always believed that when you die you are immediately in Heaven. Recently I heard that this is not true and in fact you are in a deep sleep until the second coming of Christ. I had never heard that before.

I would appreciate real answers to this.

  • Can Christians and Atheists be friends?

Not a real question. I am a Christian and my best friend is an atheist.

That is what bothers me about this board. It is assumed that christians and atheists are against each other. If you are secure in your beliefs then you won't feel threatened by another point of view.

    It's all about respect.

  • I need opinions- hoidays- his familiy or mine?

We have been married nearly 4 years. For the past several years we have hosted his family for Christmas. Last year we also hosted his family for Thanksgiving.

This year I would like to host my family for Thanksgiving and host his family for Christmas. He is insisting that we need to as BOTH families to come for Thanksgiving. We have a decent sized home but that would simply be too much. I can't do both at the same time. I don't think crowding people into a space is a very pleasant experience.

Am I wrong to ask him to leave his family out? We have not included my family for years so I think this is only fair. Opinions?

    For the record:

our family (hubby me and the kids) has 7 people plus two soon to be spouses totaling 9.

his family has 7 total people

my extended family has 12 people if they all come.

    27 people??

  • is owning a Jeep an addictive behavior?

I just bought my third Jeep, a Grand Cherokee. Hubby is looking for his second Jeep. Our kids have each owned 2 Cherokees and my daughter is looking for a Wrangler in her price range.

We have gotten to the point that we don't talk about a new "car", we instead say "time to get a new Jeep"....

I am wondering if we are loyalists or just too lazy to find another brand. We love knowing that we can easily expect 200K from them and we have a Jeep repair expert nearby. I feel safer in a GC...but that might be in my head.

Anyone else feel like owning a Jeep is addictive?

  • Did sidestep.com stop working?

I love this site and it will no longer work on either of my computers. Does it work for anyone else here?

I can enter a search but it won't complete it. I can wait ten minutes with no results.

  • wives: would this bother you?

He bought me a dozen roses for valentines day. Then I find out he also gave his mother a dozen roses. To me, I felt that this took away the romantic and personal aspect of the gift. He swears that I am wrong and that there is nothing wrong with this. How would you feel?

And before you tell me I should feel "honored" that he loves me as much as his mother, please save it. I am married to a wonderful Italian man who loves Mama a little less than God....a tiny bit less.

  • why do we need 5000 MORE points to get to level 6?

It takes 5000 points to get to level 5 and then another 5000 to go up a single level. Does this make sense??

  • if science is the key, then why can't it conquer death?

I was thinking about the loss of my grandmother. If science is what so many of you are willing to base your bets on, then why can't we keep people from dying? What makes a personality and why can't we harness that?

  • Abortions....should tax dollars pay for them?

regardless of your religious or moral beliefs, most of us can agree on this statement:

Abortion is an elective surgery for a condition that is (easily) prevented. (rape aside since that only accounts for 1% of all abortions).

If you look at this table you will see that in NY medicaid pays for about 1/3 of abortions. Is it ok for tax dollars to fund abortion?

  • Are you familiar with Flavius Josephus?

This is copied from a website. Please give me your thoughts on this guy:

Flavius Josephus (37 - 100 AD), a Jewish general and member of the priestly aristocracy of the Jews. He wrote:

At this time there was a wise man who was called Jesus. And his conduct was good, and he was known to be virtuous. And many people from among the Jews and other nations became his disciples. Pilate condemned him to be crucified and to die. And those who had become his disciples did not abandon his discipleship. They reported that he had appeared to them three days after his crucifixion and that he was alive; accordingly, he was perhaps the Messiah concerning whom the prophets have recounted wonders. 1

I would like to hear honest opinions on him and his writings. Thanks.

  • Was the resurrection of Christ just a hoax?

You can read historical accounts of the events surrounding the life and death of Jesus. For example Flavius Josephus left an account of the events and he was not a follower.

The followers of Jesus had a front row seat to the events. They claimed that Jesus rose and appeared to them. Each of the apostles were martyred for this claim and some even lost thier families. John was exiled to an island. If it was all a lie then why didn't they admit it rather than die horrible deaths?

It defies human logic that these men were willing to lay down their lives for a lie.

  • A 100 member orchestra plays a perfect symphony. Was there a composer?

If I am to believe that this earth and our life forms were created without a designer, then it also seems plausible that an orchestra does not need a composer or a conductor. Right?

  • Atheists- what do you think of Professor Howard Storm?

He was a devout atheist who openly delcared that there was no heaven, no God, no hell. He had a near death experience that changed all that and he is now a minister in Ohio. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

  • if God created you, do you owe him anything?

So many of the answers I have read suggest that God can't be called loving if he:

    1) would allow people to go to Hell

    2) would allow evil in this world

Suppose for a moment that God is real, that he did creat you and the earth. Do you owe him anything? Do you owe him the respect of following his commandments? Do you own him fellowship?

If you are unwilling to seek him or to follow his commands, then why should he give you a free pass? Why would he have mercy on you when so many others have followed him sincerely for thier whole lives?

Evil, sickness, etc is all the result of sin. Other than natural disaster, what evil in this world is not rooted in sin?

  • Non-believers: What if God IS real? What if Hell exists? What then?

As a Christian I have asked myself many times: "what if there is no God?" "What if this is all wrong"....and I entertain what that would mean for me.

So, I ask non-believers. Do you ever entertain the idea that you are wrong? What would that mean for you?
