  • Looking for the Les Paul sound without the weight-any suggestions?

I'm an old fart whose back isn't what it used to be-anyway, I borrowed a friend's Les the other night-great ax, but after about a half hour, my spinal column started acting my age-any suggestions for a dual-humbucker electric that comes close to the sound without the weight?

  • Suggestions for a son's first distortion pedal for Christmas....?

I've a talented 10-year old son who has a distortion pedal on his Christmas list. (BTW, not only is he talented, but doesn't have to be reminded to practice-that came from his mom's side...)Any suggestions for a good pedal to put between the Squier Strat and the Frontman? I play myself, but I'm strictly acoustic....

  • Gibson LP Studio vs Epi LP Studio?

OK, I'm out looking (or fantasizing, until I can talk my wife into letting me buy it) at a Les Paul Studio. What are the major differences between say, a real Gibson LP studio and the Epi copy? Is it more or less like the difference between an American Strat and a Squier? I play a Strat and a beater Cort 'Mustang' copy at the moment. Once I set the Cort up, it played great! I was going to look for a good used Gibson, but I've been hearing some real horror stories about counterfeits-particularly Les Pauls- out there, particularly on eBay and places like craigslist. I'm not gigging, just jamming with friends. For example, is the Epi harder to keep tuned and intonated?

  • Guitar players- developing a 'five fret stretch'?

I've been playing for a while now, and I guess I could call myself an 'intermediate' player- I was working on this blues rhythm riff in C the other day from www.wholenote.com. I can't give the exact addres, but the lesson is called 'Stretch Blues'. In it, it calls for playing the 3rd(C) fret on the A string and the 8th fret on the D string(B Flat) simultaneously-my acoustic is a full sized dreadnaught with a 25 1/2" scale and I don't exactly have huge hands to work with-any good stretching exercises out there?

  • Tube guitar amps- Fender Blues Jr. vs. Epiphone Valve Standard?

I play blues at jam sessions with friends- no gigging- I've been shopping for something with tubes for my Jimmie Vaughan Strat -I've played through both at GC-can't seem to make up my mind- any input either way? They're both 15 watts, the Fender is about $100 more than the Epiphone, but if we disregard the price tag...I'm not looking for volume, just good reasonably-priced tone-and if anyone can point me to a low-priced tube combo amp besides these two, that would be great also..Thanks-

PS- I've been checking out AX84.com-brings out the DIY'er in me, but that's a project for another day-after the lawn, the painting, the bathroom remodeling, the new fridge....

  • Fender JV Strat vs. Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop?

I'm about to spend my hard-earned cash on my first good electric axe- I'm down to 2 candidates: The Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop and the Fender Jimmie Vaughan Strat. I'm primarily blues (I won't be gigging, at least at the moment. They're both about the same price($600.00)-Pros and Cons for each? Thanks
