The Epiphone Les Paul Standard and Les Paul Custom are both very good guitars for the money. Since you're on a budget, I'd recommend getting a Standard or a B-Stock Standard and invest whatever you have left in a Line 6 POD Pro. The make a gold top Epi for around $500, You really need to go play them and decide for yourself. They will all sound a little different. I've played a gold top Epi myself - very nice P-90's!
