Wondering

I'm a Certified Avian Specialist and I love everything about parrots. I have a Yellow Naped Amazon (rehome/rescue), 2 Quaker Parrots (rehome/rescues), 2 Green Cheeked Conures (one purchased when I was 14, one a rescue), a Jenday Conure (breeder gift because he has a deformed foot), and a "Camelot" (3/4 Scarlet, 1/4 Blue and Gold hybrid) Macaw (rehome/rescue). I've worked at a pet store and have owned almost every type of animal, so I'm knowledgeable in many areas. I usually don't answer a question unless I know what I'm talking about!

  • How can I tell if the ionizer on my air filter creates ozone?

I know not all ionizer air filters create ozone, and I have pets that I can't have near ozone. Other ions are fine. I just haven't been using the "Performance booster" for fear it creates ozone. I have Holmes HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier.

    Thanks!

  • What can I put on my identical rats to identify them?

I just adopted 3 sister rats that look exactly alike. Until they grow and I can tell them apart, I need to be able to identify them. I wrote on them with permanent non-toxic marker, but it was almost washed off a few hours later; I re-drew it with dry erase marker. I'm sure this will rub off soon! What can I put on that's more permanent but not harmful? I don't think there are collars small enough, and I'd be wary of putting things around their necks anyways. Any ideas? They are each named and I don't want to mix them up!

(Here's just two of them, Tober on the left and Tember on the right. Roo looks just like these two, also!)

  • Is there another word for an orange colored rat?

    Google turns up this picture:

    http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2005/03/17/rat_wide...

But that's the only picture that comes up with orange or argent rat. Surely there are more pictures of orange rats online? Or is orange a name for a different color (or is that picture not really an orange rat)?

I'm adopting two "orange" rats soon, but I haven't seen them. I just wonder what they look like and how common they are. Thank you!

  • How do people feel about GM fish?

    http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/it...

I know injected fish often die (and are put through a lot in any case) so ethically one should not purchase them. What are the views on supporting GM fish? The article does mention the GM fish are usually more sensitive and stay smaller than non-GM, which leads me to conclude they are being harmed in some way. But the article also mentions injected fish and urges readers not to buy them, but it doesn't take that stance on GM fish. I wouldn't shop at a store that had injected fish; should I boycott stores that have GM fish as well?

  • Do Albino Leopard Geckos have more sensitive eyes than normal mutation?

I just took my baby Albino Leo outside for the first time. She clenched her eyes closed and squirmed like she was uncomfortable. I know they are nocturnal... but I used to have African Fat tailed geckos and my sister has a normal mutation Leo and they seem to be fine in the sun. I know lutino/albino/all 'ino' birds have more sensitive eyes than non-inos. Is the same true for reptiles? And why is it (I used to know, but don't remember--something like missing a layer in their eye..?)

  • How do I feed frozen/thawed pinkies to a CWD?

I can never get my Juvie CWD to eat things out of my hand. I try wiggling them to no avail. I refuse to feed her live pinkies though. With my Leopard Gecko I would just rub them on the side of his mouth until he bit down, then he would swallow it. Would it be the same deal with my CWD? Just kind of press it against her face until she bites it?

  • How are Budgerigars true parrots but not true parakeets?

I know that anything with a hooked bill and zygodactyl feet is a parrot, but someone said that they're not "true parakeets". I've always learned that they are parakeets, but I know there's a lot of other different kinds of parakeets, so I call them Budgies. I tried Google and all I find is that they are true parrots, why not true parakeets? Is it just the size?
