  • Where did the notion that you can sue anyone for anything come from?

Without any exaggeration, I've read some statement similar to "You can sue anyone for anything you want" close to a dozen times in various people's answers here on Yahoo! Answers over just the last week.

Any first year law student should be able to tell you that this is entirely untrue. In order to bring a civil action against someone, you need to show a valid cause of action. If I tried to file a lawsuit against my neighbor because I didn't like his haircut, for instance, my filing would be refused and the case would not be heard. My neighbor has no legal obligation to have a haircut that meets with my approval. I could not sue him for that.

So, where did this idea come from that you can "sue anyone for anything"? Why does such a fallacy seem so prevalent?

  • I'm starting my own photography business. Can you help me with some questions I have?

I got a camera for my birthday. It's a really nice one - (I know because it looks like those ones you see professional photographers using on T.V.) So, I started my own business - I've been pro now for about two weeks, but I haven't had my first photo-shoot yet - but I booked one and it's coming up. But, there's a few things that I'm not clear on. Any help would be appreciated:

    (1) - On my camera, on one side, there's this barrel-like thing that sticks out of the camera, and has this round piece of glass in the middle of it - like a round window, or something. On the other side there's like this computer-screen type thing. When I turn the camera on, there's a bunch of numbers and little symbols of stuff that comes up on that screen. What I need to know is: Which side of the camera do I point at what I want to take a picture of? Do I look through that barrel thing? There's a little hole at the top of the camera that I can see through, but that's not what I look through is it? It seems awful small - the round window in the barrel thing is much bigger, but when I look through it it's just black in there. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

    (2) There's like, I dunno, like a dozen buttons on this camera. Which one do I press to make it go?

    (3) I hit one of the buttons by accident and it took a picture (don't remember which button now - I was just hitting them all trying to make something happen), but the picture just all came out completely black - I mean there was NOTHING on the picture - it was just all 100% black. My question is: What do I do in Photoshop to make that photo look like a hundred times better than, like, say some of those awesome photos I've seen by guys like... argh! what was their names, again?... like, one of them was like "Joe McNally" or something like that. Is there like an action or something I can download for free to make that photo look like that Joe McNally guy's pictures?

Anyway - if anyone could help, it would be appreciated. And, if anyone needs some pictures taken by a pro-photographer, e-mail me. It'll be like, I dunno, fifty bucks or something. But, that will probably be going up A LOT soon once I get known and have to turn work away all the time - like, in a couple months or something. So, if you need pictures e-mail me now!

  • What do you think is a reasonable price to ask for my '98 Monte Carlo in a private sale?

    All opinions are appreciated.

It's a 1998 Chev Monte Carlo with just over 69,000 miles on it. I'm the original owner. It is the LS, not the Z24 version. Some minor rust around rear wheel wells. Power windows, cruise control (cruise currently broken), rear factory spoiler, custom rims from factory (two wheels are missing hub plates), AC (not working - think it just needs charged) and that's about it for options.

It has some fairly substantial mechanical problems - Power steering isn't working (VERY hard to steer) and there's something wrong with the starter (it sometimes grinds - like when the car is already going and you try to start it again - exact same sound - when you attempt to start it, but it does start. Also there's a slow leak in one rear tire.

I know it's a hunk of junk. But, what do you think is a reasonable price for such a car in that condition, sold as is with all known problems disclosed to buyer?

  • What Canadian act of Parliament makes it illegal for non-lawyers to practice law?

I would be immensely grateful if someone could cite for me any specific law/act/etc. in Canada that makes the practice of law by someone, who is not a lawyer, illegal. If there is no such federal act, are there Provincial acts that cover this? And, if so, can you cite the specific Ontario act?

Thanks a tonne to anyone who can help! I've looked everywhere I'm able, but I can't find the specific law.

  • What should I do about this girl that I think likes me?

So, there's this girl, right? And, I think she likes me, right? 'Cause my friend Laura - OMG! She's my BFF TIMES 10! She's so totaly cool, ok! So, anyway, Laura passes me this note in gym class, or whatever, and the note says that this girl wants to get with me, or whatever. And, I'm all like "OMG! Are you serious?" And Laura's all like "Totally!" So, I go to this girl, I go "What's up?" or whatever. And she goes "Who are you?" y'know? And I'm like WTF! So, I go to Laura, I go "WTF, Dude!" And Laura's all like "What?" And I go "WTF is up with that?" And Laura's like "WTF is up with what?" And, I go "With THAT!" And Laura's all like "Whatever! I don't even know what you're talking about!" But then, later, y'know, I'm talking to my friend Steve and he says "Dude!" So, I'm like "What?" And, he goes "WTF!, DUDE!" And I'm all like "What?" And Steve goes "You know that girl?" And I go "What girl? The fat one with the little mustache who smells like burnt pumpkin seeds?" And Steve's like "Duh! No. That other girl." And, I go "Yeah!" And he goes "She totally wants to get with you!" And, I go "As if!" And he goes "Yeah, dude!" So, I go back up to her, and I'm like "What's up?" and she goes "My brother's totally going to kick your ***!" And, I'm all like "Whoah! WTF?" And, she goes "Just kidding. LOL" And then we both LOLed, and Steve like heard us LOLing, and he ROFLed. So then I go to her, I go "I heard you want to get with me." And she's like "AS IF! GAWD!" And I go "Give me some sugar baby!" And she goes "I don't think so! WTF!" And I go "Daddy bear needs some honey, baby!" And, she's all like "Eeeeewwww! Are you freaking serious?" And I go "WTF! I heard you want to get with me!" And she goes "Get with THIS, loser!" And she kicked me in the nads. But, this other time, when we were in home room, I looked at her, and she was like writing something in her book, and I thought it was like a heart. Then later I saw her book up close, and it wasn't a heart, it was like some kind of weird porcupine type animal, or maybe a pineapple or something (she can't draw very good) but I think, because of that, I think she probably does like me 'cause the other day she looked at me, and she wasn't like "WTF! EWWW!" or anything. Plus, I did this ritual in my room where I drew a pentagram on the floor, and raised Gog-Naggasthoth - the destroyer demon from the third plane of hades, in the form of a three horned black goat, y'know? And I go to him, I go "WTF! Does this girl like me or what?" And he goes "You shall burn in lake of boiling sewage!!!" And, I go "DUDE! WTF! Answer the question already!" And he goes "Whatever, dude. I think so. I don't know" So, then I banish him back to hell with an incantation recited over the ninth seal of Paras-D'uhr, or whatever. And then I'm like "WTF! I don't know what to do, LOL!" But then, I think, because of all that, I think that means she likes me. So, what should I do?

  • Can you please help me find a specific quotation regarding the law?

I'm looking for a quote that I read some time ago. The problem is, my memory of it is vague, and I have little information regarding it.

I'm pretty sure the quote was spoken or written by a judge - quite possibly a Supreme Court judge. And, it was spoken or written quite some time ago - although, no earlier than the early part of the 20th century, I believe. It had to do with the law, or legal system, having no authority to restrict people from engaging in behavior in which there was no written law restricting such behavior.

It went something like: If there is no law against it.. blah, blah, blah... then, no matter how distasteful I find the act, I say, let them do it.

I'm likely way, way off on the wording, but that's the gist of it.

Someone please help! I desperately need to find this quote. And, I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone could provide in locating it.

  • Sony Alpha 550, or 850 DSLR Camera?

Here's my dilemma: I need a new camera.

I currently own a Sony A200, and I desperately want to upgrade. I'm ready for something better, and my A200 has developed some serious back-focusing issues - so much so that EVERY shot I take now, I focus manually. I don't want the hassle of trying to fix it myself, and I can't justify spending the money on getting someone else to do the work when I want to upgrade soon anyhow. So, please help me decide.

The main problem I have is: The A550 is within my budget right now. I could jump in my car, hit the local camera shop, and have an A550 in my hands within an hour. However, the A850 is currently out of my price range. I'm saving, but it looks like it will likely be next summer before I'd be able to drop the money on it... and, I really don't want to wait that long to upgrade. I don't want to deal with my A200 woes for another whole year.

The sticking point is: I know I wont be completely happy with an A550 for a few reasons:

    1) I'm an old film guy - I've been shooting for over 15 years and I'm used to big, bright viewfinders. The small viewfinders of the APS-C cameras really do drive me nuts. I've been shooting DSLR for two years now, and I'm still not used to the small viewfinders. I'm also kind of a big guy - 6'2" - and, I've got a big head. I find it a little difficult to comfortably, quickly and easily get my eye into position so that none of the view is blocked. Even after two years of practice, it's still more of a hassle than I'd like. I've tried the A850 in store and it's larger viewfinder works much, much better for me in that regard.

    2) I'd like to try my hand at more HDR photography. My understanding is that the A550 will only exposure bracket in steps of 0.7 - same as the A200. Whereas, the A850 offers steps of 2.0

    3) I'm mostly an artistic photographer, and when I shot film, I did a lot of wide angle work - not quite fisheye, but close - stuff in the 20mm to 24mm-ish range. To get the same effects that I want on an APS-C body, I need a lens that's around 13-16mm. Such lenses are expensive, and difficult to find used, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on lenses since I do already own a couple of nice, full-frame lenses in the 20-ish-mm range.

    4) I already own a full compliment of nice full-frame Sony compatible glass (Old Minolta AF stuff - I was a Minolta shooter before going digital) and it's a tad irksome putting them on an APS-C body, knowing that if I had a full frame, I'd be good to go.

So... I don't think I'd really be totally happy with anything less than an A850, and if I buy an A550, I'd still be looking to upgrade to the A850 as soon as possible. Of course, if I do get the A550, I'm back square one in terms of saving for a camera. So, it'll be a MUCH longer wait until I can get the A850. BUT, if I buy an A550, I'll still be much happier than I am now with my A200. I can have the A550 any time I wanted one - I could own one by the end of the day, if I wanted. But, if I decide against buying the A550, and I wait and keep saving for the A850, I'll have to put up with my malfunctioning A200 - probably for another year....yeck! I really don't like the thought of that.

I'm stuck! Help me decide, please. What should I do? What would you do? I'd appreciate your opinions.
