  • Child custody and the military?

My boyfriend's brother and his wife are getting a divorce. He is a soldier, currently deployed.

He is scared about visitation, when he gets home he will be PCS to another state.

He will be an instructor so he will be able to provide a stable environment. He is financially stable, and a great father.

She is a part time student and currently without a job. She will, of course, find a job but even with child support and help from her family, she thinks she will need help from the state.

Their daughter is about a year old.

I think he wants full custody. There has been a discussion about the possibility of PTSD affecting custody. Also, I know that courts usually side with the mother in child custody disputes.

I guess my question is how will his military career affect his ability to get custody of his daughter?

  • Effect vs. affect in this sentence?

I know that effect is usually used as a noun, and affect as a verb.

The exception usually is referring to the effect of psychological experiences.

I'm writing a research paper for my ADV. English class and I'm not sure if I'm using the word correctly.

The sentence is: Human trafficking, particularly human trafficking as part of the sex trade, affects many girls behind closed doors.

I think it should be effects, but its used as a verb so I have affects.

    Any help, please?

  • Would you be allowed to work a civilian job (while off-duty) if you are in active duty in the military?

Say for example, you are a military physician. You have been through medical school and would then have a medical license and be allowed to practice medicine in the state where you are currently located. Would you then be allowed (off-duty, on the weekends or likewise) to practice medicine in a civilian ER, on your spare time to supplement income, provided that you would be available to the military at the whim of the military?

Or are there rules against this?

  • So there is this kid who has gone to my school for two days now and has worn his ACU both days?

    Is this allowed?

He came from my school, transferred to my younger sister's school (she goes to a technical/vocational school, not public high school), and came back to my school. He didn't wear the ACU there, as their school has uniforms which change depending on your focus. And depending on his focus, it would be the equivilent of wearing his ACU while working a civilian job.

Now he is in one of my classes, the first class of the day. Thursday I just thought that he might have had to leave midday or something. Actually, I'm not even sure how he is in the US Army as he hasn't graduated from high school nor has his GED (because if he did he wouldn't be attending high school), so I'm not sure how he enlisted. My assumption is that he might be doing a split option program for reserves? I don't know.

Civilian high school. Civilian area. Wouldn't civilian attire be more appropriate?

When asked why he was wearing the uniform, his response is he wanted to, however I wasn't the one who asked him. He had both army and name tapes. I didn't see his rank, or even if he had a rank for that matter. He sits in front of me.

My sister says that at his old school he was constantly bragging about first class "something". I said Private First Class and her boyfriend then knew exactly who we were talking about.

My daddy (Army Vet) and my boyfriend (currently in the Army) both agree he should not be wearing the uniform as he is. He's not doing anything "wrong" I guess. No alcoholic bars or strip clubs for him, nor is he using the uniform for personal gain. (Except maybe for attention, but he's not holding Freshman hostage for their lunch money as far as I know.) I don't see him throughout the day so I can't say what he may or may not be doing wrong.

Both agree that he should not be doing this, and agree the most he should be wearing the uniform off-post for is picking up Cheerios from the grocery store on his way home.

My dad says that when he was in he wasn't allowed to wear it off-duty. My boyfriend is "85% sure that he is in the wrong" but that doesn't mean he is actually breaking any rules.

So is there a rule stating he shouldn't do this, a rule not just a social stigma? I think it is disrespectful to the uniform to wear it to school as he does. Maybe thats just my opinion though. It's one thing to be proud, and another to be obnoxious.

  • When is the soonest he can be deployed?

I know there is a rule about staying at a CONUS base for so long, but I can't remember what I read. He's done with basic and AIT and has been at his current post since May-ish. He has to stay there 12 months or 24 months?

Is this anywhere close to being right?

I'm not asking for deployment dates, that would be ridiculous. I'm just curious as to the minimum time he can be where he is and then receive deployment orders, now that he is no longer in AIT.

Seeing as I hear its pretty much a given that he will be deployed as long as he is on active duty. So any information would be welcomed.

  • Does this sound like a good Christmas gift idea for my soldier?

My boyfriend, 23, and I have been going out for 18 months. He's serving in Hawaii, and I am still in Ohio (pesky school and graduating and stuff).

I was thinking to ask him to send me a one time use camera or two (one for now, one for later when he is on leave with his family) and I would make a scrapbook out of it after I developed the film. For every camera he sends me to develop, I would use one too and put pictures of me in it as well.

Does this sound like a good idea?

I know its only November, but it takes ages to send or receive anything through the mail. (It took an entire month for my birthday present to get to me, almost.)

What are some things you would put in the scrapbook?

We don't really have any pictures of us because we started going out right before he left for Basic Training.

Would a CD of songs that remind me of him be too much?

    :)

  • Can you mail a disposable camera without the film being ruined?

I'm sure you can mail anything, but I'm concerned that the film will be ruined by scans or xrays. Thanks in advance.

  • Military branch rivalry jokes?

I was taking to my boyfriend a few days ago, who's in the Army. I mentioned some Air Force ROTC guy I was talking to and the first words out of his mouth were "******* Fly Boy". I laughed SO hard.

That was the first time I saw the rivalry between branches first hand, even though I knew it existed before.

I know its like sibling rivalry or college rivalry and in the end all is forgiven. So, in attempt to make me laugh for the best answer, anybody can share there personal little remarks against other branches. (Little remarks, not entire jokes.)

Of course, I am unfairly biased to the Army, because there's a certain soldier who has my heart, but anything you can throw at me is welcomed. :)

  • In 8 years, where do you see the US military in the Middle Eastern Conflicts?

I'm referring mostly to the Iraqi restructurization attempt, but all the conflicts in the Middle East, we find ourselves involved in.

I was having a debate with my father on this issue. He says that its an unsolvable religious conflict. Its been going on forever and its probably impossible to solve, so theoretically, it will go on forever.

And then I said, if it was irresolvable, than we will leave just as we have before and other nations have.

But do you think that we will still going to be in the Middle East in 8-10 years? Why or why not? Do you think we are helping things and are actually making a difference or making matters worse? Do you think it is changeable? Ect, ect. Please remember to be respectful in your answers.

  • How is pregnancy handled in the military?

I want to join the Army, possibly as a career. It'll be after Medical School (well technically I'll be in the inactive reserves during Med school, I'm planning on doing HPSP), but when/if I have a family, I'll be in the military.

All the articles I've read and have been able to find are on those who use pregnancy to get out of deployment. Or single parents. Or fathers in the military. Or military brats. I haven't been able to find anything on soldiers who are mothers.

So how is pregnancy handled in the military? Procedures and such? Whatever information you would like to supply, I will read. I know about family care plans and such and the amount of time you have to loose the pregnancy weight after giving birth. I'm more interested in procedures during the pregnancy, not on afterwards. Like restrictions on PT or work and such.

Please, nothing on how irresponsible it must be to have children while you are in the military. You can lead your life and I'll lead my own.

  • Army HPSP and the requirements?

Okay, currently I am a senior in high school. I am looking to go into medicine as a physician, and the Army Heath Professions Scholarship Program has come across my attention.

From my understanding, I would have to have my bachelor's degree and be accepted into medical school. Now what I don't understand is the requirement of qualifying as a commissioned officer.

I know there is AMEDD Officer Leaders Basic Course. Does it mean I have to be eligable for that? I know that there is no basic training as there is for enlisted, just this training course. Obviously I still would have to meet the height/weight/fitness requirements to join, and pass the background/security check.

I would be O-1 while I was in school but promoted O-3 as Captain after graduation? Would I be O-1 active or reserve? It says that I would get active pay while I wasn't in school (for breaks) because I'll be on bases, working. But I also think I've read that my time in school would qualify as reserve time, and that it would count towards my 4 years reserve time?

    Thank you in advanced.

  • Can some one tell me what ARBA shows and 4-H shows will judge my Doe and Litter on?

Monday I have a 4-H show, and Tuesday is my ARBA show. I've never entered a Doe and Litter class before.

I've made sure that my doe and her litter are in the best condition, which is all I can change, but I was wondering what do they look for.

The rabbit committee head for 4-H says they judge the doe alone, and then compare her kits to her. What are they looking for?

Also, my doe has a little cut on her back. I'm not sure how she got it, and I'm continously using neosporin which is making it heal rather quickly. I know the little bit of missing fur will not grow back in time, but will the cut heal she got it around Saturday or Sunday, well at least I didn't notice before then? And if it doesn't will she be DQed? I'm really upset that she was injured because I worked really hard to keep her happy and healthy.

  • Disqualified rabbits' offspring ability for show?

I have mini rex rabbits. Recently, as a 4-H project, my doe has given birth to a litter of four. The fair is next week and I was doing a little preparing and I was sanding the nails of the kits down so they wouldn't be so sharp.

Then I noticed one of the kits was missing toe back toes. It looks as though the kit was born like that (its now 7, almost 8 weeks old), and I never noticed any missing toes before.

Out of the litter, minus the missing toes, I would probably (even though they are all still young) choose this kit as the one I will keep--but I don't want to keep a rabbit that will have offspring with future problems.

If I understand correctly, kits can be born without toes but they can also chew them off in the nesting box. From the way that the foot is, my guess is that it was born that way, and I never noticed it.

Now, if it WAS born that way, would this effect future litters? Or is it just by chance that it's missing toes? I guess I've been lucky in the fact that I've never had a problem like this--or any other rabbit that was born with a problem which would DQ it, out of any of my other litters.

So, if there is very little risk that future offspring will have this condition I would like to keep this doe, otherwise I will sell this one and pick another.

    So my questions are:

1.) Assuming that the missing toes are in fact birth defects, what is the possibilty that future kits born will be toeless?

2.) If it would not affect future litters, and I choose to sell the doe anyways, should I mark down the price as if she was only "pet quality" even though she would still be good breeding stock?

There is no sign, such as scarring, that they were torn off.

  • What to expect after spaying?

My 12 week old shepherd-lab mix which I got from the animal shelter when she was six weeks old is scheduled for shots and spaying tomorrow at eight A.M. If she's awake at 1pm then I bring her home.

I'm not expecting the surgery to calm her down any. I mean, for the day she'll be wary from the anaesthetics given to her for the surgery. Will I still be able to talk her for walks? The only way she's good is if she is tired. And how will I keep her from getting her insisions infected? I had my cats spayed when I got them (manymany years ago--I don't remember all that much) but all we had to do was separate them for a while, until we took them back a week or so later so have the wire sutures removed.

I guess I'll end up asking my vet tomorrow anyways, I'm just trying to be prepared as possible. :)

  • I want to get my cartilage pierced. Gun vs. Needle?

I have my left cartilage pierced twice. I had it done 3 years ago. It was done with a gun and I didn't realize that guns could shatter your cartilage.

Anyways, I now want two more piercings. (Two more because that's how many earrings are in a package, it keeps everything symmetrical and even, lol.)

I have the outer rim (helix?) done. I am considering the tragus. Or else I may get my lobes pierced again since sometime after I got them when I was 8 I let them grow in.

Furthermore, my concern is about the gun vs. needle debate.

I'm not really concerned about the pain, I take pain well. Nor am I overly concerned about infection. I mean I don't want an infection but if I take care of it, it should be fine. I've had needle piercings before and gun piercings, each unaffected by infection.

The part I am conserned about though is the shattering of my cartilage. (Owie?) Has anyone had your cartilage shattered? I was fine when I had my first two cartilage piercings done but now I've heard of guns shattering piercings.

What sort of tattoo parlor do I look for to pierce my cartilage with needles?

  • What are the best things to do for long bus rides?

In 2 weeks I'm headed to Disney World with the rest of my choir group and a couple band kids to perform.

The bus ride will be about 16-18 hours not including the every 2-3 hour stops which will happen. *Sigh*

Anyways, We've already have a few things we plan to do.

    The list includes:

    Coloring Books

    Eye Spy

    2-3 Movies

    Food!

    Uno & Other Card Games

    Never Have I Ever

    Music

Read (I want to finish Twilight so I can see the movie :O :D)

That being said, our DVD players will only last soo long and all that only takes us through the first night. (We'll be leaving 4:30 pm and arriving at about noon-1pm the next day) Even with sleeping we will still have a lot of time on our hands.

Do you have any other fun ideas?

  • I was wondering what variety this mini rex is.?

He's a little over a year old. We ended up with him after the kids next door couldn't take care of him [Sad how that happen, eh?]. I have no practical use for him because he doesn't have a pedigree and being newish to breeding I'm not 100% sure of his color. Now I'm just curious. :)

I'm thinking he doesn't have a standard color, but what do I know? Maybe a chocolate or a diluted harlequin? Maybe?

  • Is it possible to make a Honda Big Red 2009 road legal?

Okay so I'm sitting around and I see an ATV go down the road. And I think... hm, it is probably not legal but can I make one legal?

So for all intents and purposes I took the Honda Big Red Side-by-Side UTV "MUV" for my little experiment.

It's actually bigger than the car I drive now, "wow, right?" and although it cannot reach 65 mph, I have read that it has gone 54 mph, which is alright if I do not use the highways as most road are 25, 35, 45 or 55 where I would be driving it. :)

Alright so then I went and I found my copy of the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws (other copies could be found online), and I read about registering your vehicle and what they check for.

I've seen pictures of Road-legal ATVS registered in California as Motorcycles after being converted to a three-wheeler. And my first approach was to see what I could do about adjusting the Big Red to a three-wheeler, and I decided that because it is so much like a car (and would cost about the same as a car after the process was completed) I figured leave it with four wheels.

Now specifics are best left up to the book. But I have gone through and picked what would need to be present when it is checked and registered.

    My list contains:

Minimum 1/16 inch treaded tires “road legal”

    Primary Brake

    Emergency Brake

    Two Headlights

    One Taillight visible 500ft away

Two Taillights visible 500ft away when brakes are applied

    Illuminated Rear Registration plate

Two red reflectors (separate or apart of taillights)

Turn signals visible 300ft in normal sunlight

    Safety Glass

    Exhaust Pipe

    Equipped with standard muffler

    Rearview mirror

    Windshield Wipers

    Windshield Washer

Horn capable of being heard at least 200 ft

    Safety Belts

    Windshield

    Side windows

    E-Checkable Engine (Ohio Emission's test)

    Speedometer

Now if I found a way to add all these items to the Big Red, would I be allowed to register it as a car?

I understand that it is easier and almost exactly the same price as buying a small truck but I just want to know if it is possible.

Could they deny me the plates based on the fact it WAS an off-road vehicle, or would they give me them seeing as it lives up to everything a car would?

  • How to do well in school?

I came to the realization when I got my report card that I could do better.

Okay, so that is always what happens and I become motivated for like... a week, if that.

I'm going to be a junior next year. I'm not taking as many advanced classes (because there aren't as many as you move up in my school) and I'm scared that my GPA will suffer.

So far my 3.5 gpa has been held up by doing so-so in weighted courses because I haven't been applying myself. When I do feel motivated I do great. ^-^

So at the conclusion of my sophomore year, I decided next year will be different. But I have problems with actually taking the time out to study. Most of the time I ace tests no problem by just paying attention, but I need to learn to study.

I normally cram homework in first period, and that will need to stop too. Even the semesters I have had a study hall, I sat there or dropped them to become a teacher's aid.

So how do you keep organized? How do you motivate yourself to study?
