  • I prepaid about $6000 for therapy. What can I claim on taxes?

I prepaid about $6000 for vision therapy for my son because I got a discount for paying up front. He still has several appointments into 2018. Do I calculate the amount of the $6000 used in 2017 or the total $6000 for 2017's taxes? Also, it is for services not covered by most insurances. Can I still claim it?

  • Should I patch ceiling or replace all sheetrock?

I had a toilet leak and the ceiling and part of a wall underneath were affected. I ripped out about 3'x4' of the ceiling and about 1.5'x3' of the wall. I think I have three options.

    1. Patch the holes with sheetrock and try to match the thick knockdown texturing. I feel like this will look really bad.

    2. Tear down the whole wall and ceiling and redo the whole thing. More work/money but will look better.

    3. Patch the holes and then spread some mud to cover the thick texture and then re-texture the whole thing.

Which will be easiest? Which will look better?

  • Samsung front load washer is leaking during spin cycle?

I took off the back panel and ran a spin cycle and the water seems to be coming out around all sides of the tub as it spins and then gathers at the bottom and leaks out the front end. Seems to be getting worse. Thanks

  • What would be the best sound insulation solution for my basement ceiling?

Our basement family room has an insulated ceiling but the bedrooms do not. One bedroom is below a bathroom and it gets very loud because of a water waste pipe. We have a storage room that has open access to the ceiling space. It would be about 20ft that we would have to push insulation into. This seems like it would be very hard with traditional roll insulation. It would be very easy to put some lengths of soundboard or xps or something in, but I don't know if it would achieve the desired effect. Thanks in advance.

  • How to buy replacement tile at Lowes?

I need to buy about 10 replacement tiles at Lowes. I found the tile that matches the ones in my kitchen that need to be replaced, but it has been over 4 years and the current tile has a lot more variation from tile to tile. Each of my kitchen tiles has light and dark tones. The new tile has some that are all light mixed in with the light and dark ones.

Anyways, what is Lowes' policy on picking through tiles to find ones that will match my kitchen better? Especially since the first time I looked through a loose stack of about 10, I only found 2 that would work.

  • What type of IC does a Dream Lite use?

I got a Dream Lite and it is broken now and I am wondering about its circuitry. It can be powered with battery or 4.5V adaptor. Its settings are basically Off, Yellow only, Blue only, Green only, or it fades between the three colors. There is also a switch for whether or not you want it to turn off after 20 minutes. There are three separate LEDs, not a RGB combo. It has an 8-pin DIP.

Right now if you plug it in or put batterys in, all three LEDs stay on constantly. If I jump the VCC+ pin and its adjacent pin, the LEDs all turn off and then they come slowly back on, one at a time and then stay on.

One interesting thing I learned while trying to figure this out is that different dream lites have different circuitry. I learned this from looking down in them at the store. They all use the same circuit board, but they have different components. I have the dog one and there is an empty space for a polarized capacitor. I looked at other dog ones in the store and they didnt have one either, but the unicorn did.

So what is probably wrong with it, and how could I fix it? Does it use a standardized IC that I could replace? It looks like it MIGHT be missing a capacitor, but I don't think it is.

  • Are my home's telephone lines wired wrong?

My home is wired with cat5e for phone lines. Each room has a phone jack.

There is one cat5e cable coming out of the back of my house connected to nothing outside.

There is one cat5e cable haning down from my basement ceiling connected to nothing inside. It is in the midst of several coaxial cables also haning down, some connected to splitters. I bought the house new and never got traditional phone service installed. I just get VOIP through comcast. I plug a phone cord from my modem to a phone jack and then all the phone jacks get a dial tone. Exept the basement.

I opened up all of the phone jacks and I think they are connected in a series, jack to jack, and I can't find where they are supposed to converge if I was to get traditional phone service through the wire coming out of the back of my house. I don't think it exists.

We contracted the basement to be finished before we moved in. It seems that the basement phone jack lines are not connected into the upstairs phone line series. I think all the phone lines got walled up and they are connected to eachother (except upstairs to basement) but not to an outside source.

I looked up who did the electrical for my house on the county permit and inspection records website. If I contact them do you think they will help me figure this out?

  • Can I run ethernet over existing cat5e cable in my house?

My phone lines are cat5e cable. They are run in a series I think. I don't have a junction box where several phone lines converge. I bought my house new and never got a phone service installed. I just have VOIP. I have a cat5e cable coming out of the back of my house where the cable is hooked up. I have one cat5e cable hanging from the ceiling in my basement where all of the coaxial cables converge. (They are just hanging down too, connected with splitters). I run a phone cord from my cable modem to any phone jack (wired with cat5e) in my house and then all the phone jacks in the house work. I want to make it so all of my phone jacks are converted into ethernet jacks too. Can I split the cable in the wall and get a wall plate that has a phone jack and an ethernet jack? Then can I plug an ethernet cable from my modem into any ethernet jack and then all the ethernet jacks get internet?

  • Will I be able to fall asleep for my MSLT?

I am so nervous about my upcoming MSLT. They will give me 20 minutes to fall asleep to see if I have narcolepsy. I can never fall asleep in 20 minutes and I am so afraid that I will be so nervous that I will not fall asleep. I am worried I have some combination of narcolepsy (because I am always so tired) and anxiety. I had two sleep studies and the first one I didnt fall asleep for because I just kept thinking 'I have to fall alseep'. The next one I took an ambien and fell asleep. I just know that this nap study will be worthless and I don't want to pay for it!!

  • How to replace this water valve?

Hello, I have a water supply coming out of my house feeding my sprinkler system. It comes out of the house, bends up, has a valve, and then a back-flow preventer. There is another valve attached to the side of the back-flow preventer that feeds into a pvc and down into the ground to the solenoids. The valve between the house and the back-flow preventer is leaking. I did drain the system but I bought a replacement valve that you can drain directly also. Everything is threaded so I assumed I could unscrew it, clean it off, put tape on the threads and screw it back in. My problem is that if I unscrew the broken valve one way it screws onto the next connection. It is also bending the pvc pipe going into the ground from the pressure. I decided it might be easier to unscrew the valve from the pvc pipe and go from there, but I cannot get it unscrewed either way because it gets totally screwed in on one side and the other side is not unscrewed yet. I am not strong enough to get the broken valve moving much. Could I get a different wrench to work better? I really hope this makes sense!! By the way, none of the connections outside was soldered, they are all put together with threading tape to seal them.

  • What phone should I get?

I have to get a new phone and I want to make sure it has a fast processor. And a lot of memory and stuff. I really don't care about brand as long as it is an android. I will not get an iphone. The phone I have now is an old droid. My husband has a droid 2 global and it is pretty good but it's screen keyboard is really stupid. I would like to get one without a slider so it isn't so heavy. Thanks in advance!

  • Help with ebay situation!!?

    Hello,

I am new to ebay and someone messaged me with an offer of $30.00 for something that I had listed for a minimum bid of $50.00 with a 'buy it now' of $60.00. I said I can't take lower than $50.00 and they said ok, and then they bought it at the buy it now price.

I told them I would sell it at 50.00 but ebay wont let me change the price after the auction ended.

    What can I do?

Here are my ideas: Relist or upgrade the shipping.

  • Can someone explain property taxes to me?

Our property taxes for our home doubled from 2010 to 2011. We live in a new neighborhood and bought our home new. Last year the property tax bill was 860, and this year it was 1600. So now our escrow payment has shot up. So I have been looking into things and the house across the street's tax bill was 335 for this year. It is the exact same model but ours has a half finished basement and is valued at about $20000 more. The house across the street was sold last summer so is that why it's taxes are so much less than ours? This is the first year that a resident paid taxes on it?

Also, can I calculate what my 2012 tax bill will be? I know I have to multiply the assessed value by the mill levy, but will that not be decided until december 2011? Or do I use the current mill levy?

  • Do I need to let the county assessor know that my home has five bedrooms instead of three?

I looked up info about my home and it says it only has three bedrooms, but really it has five. The finished basement square feet is also listed wrong. It says 1000 square feet is finished but it is really more like 1300 square feet is finished and 200 square feet is an unfinished storage room. It says it has seven total rooms. By my count it has 8 (or 9 if you count the master bath as a separate room from the master bedroom). How important are these differences and should I try to get them fixed?

  • Question about kitchen sink sprayer?

I like having a vegetable sprayer with my kitchen sink, but when I pull it out, I have to thread it back into the cabinet. Sprayers that I have used before always seem more retractable and almost automatically get pulled back under the sink.

The sprayer itself got cracked so I need to buy a new one, but I am also wondering about getting a better hose or whatever too.

    Any suggestions?
