  • CSS3 has support for font loading, but the rendered height doesn't match the font?

    http://www.sdfoodjustice.org/fontcssbug.html

Hard to explain the issue here but if you go to that URL you'll see that I have in very large letters some text that is linked. It's using CSS3 so you'll need to look at this in Opera, Chrome, Safari, Firefox 3 maybe IE8?

When you mouseover the giant link here, you'll notice that part of it turns grey. The whole thing should turn grey but it seems that this font is "taller" than the link space blocked for it. The trouble is that if you mousover the top part (the part that doesn't change color) it's not detected as a hover and not clickable. Is this a bug in the browser and are there any workarounds? Should I just choose a "shorter" font?

  • What is the proper way to write a plant's scientific name WITH the varietal name?

I'm writing a wiki for some plant data and I'd like each plant page titled by the scientific name, but now I want to break it down even further and have a page for each varietal. Is there a proper way to list a varietal in a scientific name? Some varietals of tomatoes, eggplants, etc. have significantly different characteristics than others in their species, and there's enough information to justify a full page on some of them. Any ideas?

  • where can i find and compare prices on roofing and insulation materials?

I've found lots of building forums and general "building advice" columns that go over very high-level pros/cons to choosing roofing material and insulation options, but I want a site where I can see hard costs of ordering each of the materials so I don't have to call up a ton of contractors or dealers. Does such a comparison site exist? Everyone offers quotes, but that takes too much time to apply for quotes to every dealer.

I'm specifically interested in knowing what green options I can afford (cotton batting vs. formaldehyde-free fiberglass, etc.).

  • How much should I be paying for a financial advisor?

I'm currently paying 1% (or $500 whichever is more) per year for my financial planner. I'm still in the $500/yr range as my account is only slowly growing. So far, my account has been moving in the right direction (though I'm not savvy enough to compare it against any index baseline). The planner is a smaller company (only a few employees) so I probably get a bit more attention than working with a huge company, and there's no minimum account balances (many large companies wouldn't talk to me if I don't put $25k into an account).

So two part question: A.) Is 1% per year (or $500/yr in my case) too high? B.) Should I stick with my financial advisor, switch to a bigger company with lower fees or just throw my money into an index fund?

  • I need to replace my roof. Is it possible (allowed by code) to turn my attic into a greenhouse?

I've been told by my insurance company that I need to replace my roof. It doesn't leak, it's just old and due to be replaced. I'd like to do something "different" with it and make a usable space out of the currently unusable attic. I was thinking it would be great if I could strip off the roof and replace it with greenhouse material to turn the attic into a mini-greenhouse. The house is a 1930s craftsman and I live in San Diego.

I need to know if, first, this is possible and, second, if there's any chance in hell that it would be deemed okay by a city like San Diego. If not, what's the primary objection that the city would have with the idea? Are there any examples of other people doing this anywhere in the US?

  • Section 8 guy subleasing his place, now in jail. What to do about sub lessee?

I'm the president of a small HOA in San Diego, CA. We have 8 units in out complex. One of the units is rented to a guy on Section 8. That guy subleases to a lady that has a bit of a criminal history and inclination. Yesterday, the Tenant (we'll call him Bob) went to jail after getting in a fight. The Sub lessee (we'll call her Mary) is now living there by herself. Meanwhile the owner has been impossible to reach. I'm told you can't sublease if you're on Section 8.

So...my question is, how do I get rid of Mary? She's definitely been a public nuisance at best and a small-time drug trafficker at worst. If I can't reach the owner of the unit, do I have any way to get Mary out of my community? As the HOA or via the Section 8 housing program, do we have any way to evict? She claims that since she's been getting mail there she has a legal right to be there and needs to be formally evicted.

  • My wife's doctor ordered an expensive test and the lab is charging me. What should I do?

So my lovely wife went in for a regular pap and physical. A couple months later, without having received any report of the results, I get an invoive from the lab (LabCorp) that did the work for about $300.

I call up my insurance company (Aetna) and they say it's a newer more expensive pap test, that they don't cover and they're not sure why they would have ordered it.

I call up LabCorp and they say pretty much the same thing.

When I talk to the doctor, she says that it's my responsibility to know what my insurance covers and what it doesn't. But I thought it was reasonable to assume that the doc would run a regular pap and it would be covered.

SOooo, now I'm stuck and I don't know what to do. I don't want to pay $300 for what should have been a normal routine exam. Shouldn't the doctor have informed my wife and I that this would be a more expensive/thorought/whatever test and might not be covered?

It's stuff like this that make people afraid to go to the doctor...*sigh*

  • How do I fix a door that was ripped from the wall?

I'm not sure how this happened but I have a door that has pulled away from the frame at the top. There's two hinges that attach the door to the frame and they are recessed into the frame (there's a spot cut out of the door frame for the hinge as when it closes, the door needs to be flush with the wall.

Since it's recessed, it's not easy to move the hinge up or down. The places where the screws attach the hinge to the wall are stripped out completely. As I see it my options are to try to patch the screw holes or use larger screws. What do you guys recommend?

    Thanks!

  • I take our dog out and he poops and pees. When I bring him back in, he poops AGAIN! How do I correct this?

I take him out, he relieves himself, but after bringing him in, I'll turn my back for a few minutes and he'll have pooped and/or peed inside the house! How can I correct this behaviour? He's still young but I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing to correct this. We crate him at night but we don't want to crate him all day too.

  • Are there legal implications for posting the contents of an email to the web?

I'm curious as to whether or not there are any US laws restricting a person from posting what was originally a private email message to the internet (to make it publicly available). I have a hunch that it would be prohibited to publish a person's email address without their consent, but if I were to obfuscate the email address, would I be allowed to publish the contents of the email? Thanks!

  • Which is best to raise and milk (for cheese): goat or sheep?

I've been considering farming for awhile. In addition to farming fruits and veggies, I'd like to try my hand at cheese making and I personally love goat and sheep cheeses. I've never raised livestock before but I'm not afraid of a challenge.

I'd like to know whether a goat or sheep would be better for a beginner like me. Are there more diseases/problems with one vs. the other when it comes to raising them, milking them and making cheese from their milk? I've heard much hype about the nutritional value of sheep cheese and I personally like the flavor of sheep cheese a bit better, but I'll go with whichever one (sheep or goat) will be the easiest to work with.

Also (for bonus points...well not literally) which breed would be best for a beginner? I've looked at Nigerian Dwarf Goats (and they seem quite promising) but I haven't heard of any specific breeds of sheep that are best for milking. Thanks!

  • Are there plans to allow new diesel cars back in California?

I'm a big biodiesel fan and I've been frustrated since 2003 when California stopped allowing new passenger vehicles powered by diesel to be sold in the state. The primary vehicle that this excludes is the VW series (Jetta, Beetle, Golf). These cars are afforable, reliable and (with biodiesel) very clean. More importantly, they use up less oil as they have significantly better mileage.

Does anyone know if California has plans to allow new diesel vehicles like these to be sold in the state again?

I'd like to get my fiancee on my benefits asap. Is it quickest to get married in Vegas some weekend (and if I do that, am I married in CA too?) or is it quickest to just get a marriage certificate at a courthouse in CA?

    Thanks!
