  • Which two historic generals periodically alternated over their combined forces, ultimately leading to their defeat?

IIRC, the acting Commander changed daily; the enemy somehow exploited ambiguity regarding who was in control, chaos ensued and two Army's were lost to a comparatively inferior fighting force.

  • In the context of computer-system RAM, what is the meaning of the abbreviation UINB?

I've probably used such jargon in the distant past, but now I draw a blank. Here is the context:

    Apacer P/N 75.B82CN.G00 is a 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM 240-pin DIMM, Registered ECC, CL9 using the Hynix H5TQ1G43BFR-H9C memory chip in Rank 2.

    Apacer P/N 78.01GC8.422 is a 1GB DDR3-1333 RAM 240-pin DIMM, UINB ECC, CL9 using the Elpida J1108BABG-DJ-E memory chip in Rank 1.

Yes, I realize that one of these is a 1GiB module and the other is a 4GiB module. I was going to give an example in which the module sizes are the same, but decided the people who can answer this question won't be thrown by such disparity. Pardon the pun.

Thanks in advance for relevant expertise shared.

  • formula to find the value of a multiple of the average for a group including that multiple?

Here is an example: A group contains 888 members having an aggregate value of 17,760,000 and 111 members having an aggregate value of 2,200,000; the group also contains one additional member valued at 20 times the average for the entire group. Q: What is the value of the remaining member? A: 407,755.10.

I can get the answer through the cut-and-try method, but that's horribly inefficient. Surely, there is a formula that will allow me to get the answer in one execution.

  • Please define "Objects and Purposes" as it applies to a corporate constitution.?

Are "Objects" legally differentiated from "Purposes" -- and if so, then how? I'm helping write a constitution for a local union, and the sample constitutions I've read thus far seem poorly constructed: I want to do a first-rate job that will survive me.

  • Is there a handheld computing device that meets these criteria?

I need a handheld computing device running OpenOffice Calc (v. much preferred) -- or MS Excel, if Calc isn't an option -- or some "equivalent" spreadheet software.

I prefer at least 320 x 480 pixels for the display, but can get by with something smaller.

It can have a QWERTY kybd that flips open to reveal the display (and, when closed, doubles as a protective cover), or the kybd can be digital (on the display), or the kybd can be on the front of the device.

Full recovery -- meaning display of the last open spreadsheet page & complete functionality of the spreadsheet s/ware -- from "sleep" mode needs to be well under 3 seconds.

Battery life needs to be <= 10 hours of normal spreadsheet use between recharges, and I don't want a battery that develops "memory:" taking advantage of my battery's full potential shouldn't mean I have to fully deplete my battery before recharging it.

I don't need wireless anything (gotta plug-in to recharge anyway), but a (USB/E-net) dock would be nice.

  • URGENT NEED FOR lost MS Excel setup file; Email or download file? [see details]?

I had an MS Office suite (old, but legit) on my computer & was using Excel to help me manage my mom's diabetes, keep track of her feeding, medication, bathing, and other healthcare & lifesaving efforts I and my dad use in caring for her (she's a constant care patient at home).

My computer became slow, so I deleted a lot of files and cleaned up the HDD (avoiding removal of Excel, etc.) -- but while I was working in the wee hours of the morning (I've probably averaged 3-4 hours of sleep per day for the past month since Mom last got back from the hospital), I noticed my MS applications were in separate folders.

For whatever reason, this bothered me, and I tried moving all of them into a new "Microsoft" folder. I ignored the "this may cause some applications to not work" message, because it had always been overly cautious (apps always seemed to continue working normally) in the past, plus I was really fatigued and didn't appreciate the significance of the message.

  • How do I adjust where on screen programs open in Windows 2000?

I've located my task bar vertically on the left; when I open Mozilla or MSIE, there's no problem -- but MS Excel consistently hides part of the worksheet behind the task bar when I first open it.

I've tried adjusting the size, dragging the margins of the workbook around until they fit where I want them, then closing and re-opening Excel -- but it returns to its (apparently, some sort of default) position.

How can I get it to occupy only the part of the display not occupied by the task bar?

  • What is the name of the legal principle making some laws not apply to officials?

Legislatures occasionally exempt themselves from the laws they pass, or they craft laws that apply to everyone except the executive or judicial branches, etc.

  • Where does the energy come from?

Let's imagine I have a vacuum chamber bisected by a wall of glass (2 coaxial chambers), and I conduct a "light speed" experiment in which light is introduced into the end of one chamber and shined through the opposite end of the other chamber. c in the first chamber is 299,792,458 m/s and c in the second chamber is 299,792,458 m/s; however, c through the glass is (arbitrarily) 214,137,470 m/s (5/7 c in a vacuum).

The photons impart a very small amount of energy to the glass as they are slowed; however, they accelerate to their original speed upon exiting the glass. How is this possible? Whence cometh the energy to accelerate those photons?

I realize the accelerated mass is going to be infinitesimal, and that the rate of acceleration is going to be near infinity, but the energy still has to have come from somewhere.

  • For real physical objects, what is Vmax?

If E=mc^2: algebraically, Vmax should = c^2, yes? Therefore, at any point for real physical objects, if c=299,792,458 m/s; c^2 = 89,875,517,873,681,800 m/s = Vmax(local), yes? ["(local)" is to acct for variable time]

Assuming a device could be constructed to produce a relatively stable gravitational distortion disproportional to (and much greater than indicated by) its actual mass (thus artificially slowing time locally for it), could that object and its artificial gravitational distortion be accelerated to or beyond c^2 relative to the faster time outside the artificial gravitational distortion?

Understanding that realization of the gravitational effect would include some delay, it seems at least superficially plausible foreign-body gravitational influence would be negligible.

For years, people thought the displacement hull was the only form for waterborne vessels; that's no longer true. The analogy is to accelerating a mass significantly beyond our perception of c.
