I know if someone is receiving SSI they cant maintain a balance of 2000 or more for a period of time before they will discontinue benefits, but what about SSDI?

my best friend is a single mom. two of her other friends are single moms...there is a wealthy guy who owns a car shop; he buys them lots of expensive gifts and their kids lots of expensive gifts and has them "pay him back" by working in his shop as a cashier (my friend always does, but her 2 friends never even show for their shifts) . i'm married i need $ to pay on my taxes, i ask guy if i can work in shop a few shifts to pay taxes and he won't let me...what's up with that? is there a psychology of wanting to "mother hen" my friends/take advantage of their "neediness for a money" so badly or like a "i am needed" thing here?
