In Exodus 20:14, God commands that his followers not commit 'adultery.' What is the original meaning of this?
In multiple books of the Bible such as Exodus and Leviticus, the word 'adultery' is used in the contemporary translations I have. However, many meanings and words change intent and action between the centuries from when the Bible was originally written and now, not to mention the endless series of translations which it has undergone to reach contemporary English. I'm interested in the original intent of this law, what it meant, and what punishment it should bear today. If we take a literalist view, in at least two seperate examples of adultery that I can find (in Leviticus 20:10 and Deuteronomy 22:22), the punishment is death for both the man found committing adultery and the woman he is, well, "adultering." Does that mean that only a man can instigate adultery? As much information and fact as can be given would be appreciated - this has bugged me since I was a boy in Catechism a decade ago.
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality2 decades agoDo most women "mature" to the point where they DO feel they should give nice guys a chance against bad boys?
My former girlfriend and I broke up in June of 2005 - two weeks later she was sleeping with my best friend, even though he has a reputation of loving and leaving women. I was a devoted boyfriend for three years. I am pretty young (20) and did provide for her almost like a husband. I've been emotionally extremely mature for a very long time, and I wanted only the best for her. Her relationship with my ex best friend lasted four days, but she looks back at those days and sometimes will still tell me she has a crush on him. She says she loves me, but that I am just not for her right now. I want to know if there are women out there that do look for someone that adores them for who they are, that enjoys cuddling more than sex, but who still really enjoys sex. I'm willing to try anything once, and I'm very willing to sacrifice so my loved ones don't have to. I love women - they are the poetry of life. I'm a pretty nice, relatively handsome man. Is this EVER what women look for?
