  • Will a 3 amp charger charge my phone too fast?

I am planning on installing a more permanent phone charger in my car. I like to have as few wires showing as possible, so I'm getting a 3 amp DC/DC converter rated at 12v in to 5v @3 amps out. It has plain input leads that I'll splice into my cigarette lighter leads, and a standard usb port output that I'll connect a standard micro usb cable to. This will all be mounted inside the dashboard in an area that will have some airflow, and the micro usb cable will run out near where I usually put my phone.

My question is if I am making too much amperage available to my phone. The charger that came with it is rated at 1.15 amps. Granted, I have the Motorola razr Maxx hd which has a 3300 mAh battery so 3 amps is pretty close to 1c. I really don't know if the phone regulates the charge internally, or if it relies on the limited output of the charger.

  • How can I change the window background color in Windows 7?

Note, I am not talking about the desktop background or the window border, but the background while in folders and such. For example, hit start, then documents. You will notice that the color behind all of your folders will be white.

I am trying to change the color without changing from the Aero theme.

There is of course the high contrast options, but I would like keep the look and feel of 7.

  • Does anyone else get some really strange content in Outlook junk email converted to plain text?

I have noticed for some time now that when Outlook catches certain junk mail and converts it to plain text I get some really strange messages. If I display it as HTML this goes away and it looks like how junk mail usually does. I mean, it's like a full paragraph out of the bible or the Iliad or something. Here is one that was under the title of "Your new summer smile" from Lumineers.

" found out "living words;" there are in him more daring figures and metaphors become familiar through their use of them; such as "the cloud-compelling while the first names of the age appear as my subscribers, and the most till they are reconciled by the address of Vulcan. The Greeks in shouts their joint assent declare, God of the silver bow! thy shafts employ, Now pleasing sleep had seal'd each mortal eye, Nor doubt the vision of the powers divine; Generous he rises in the crown's defence, And try the faith of Chalcas and of heaven. In arts of counsel, and in speaking well! And Merion, dreadful as the god of war. Divine neas brings the Dardan race, Still edged to wound, and still untired with blows, Two heralds now, despatch'd to Troy, invite For nine long years have set the world in arms; Still Priam's walls in peaceful honours grow, Nor are their bodies rocks, nor ribb'd with steel; Have ye forgot what seem'd your dread before? Thy angry lance; which piercing to the bone Pallas disrobes; her radiant veil untied, The groaning axle bent beneath the load; Else, singed with lightning, hadst thou hence been thrown, With woods, with vineyards, and with harvests crown'd. We guard the friendship of the line we boast."

So, yea... That's like an eighth of what was in the e-mail. Has anyone else noticed this happening before?

  • Wiring an AC motor (4 wires)?

I am trying to wire up a salvaged AC motor for a lab project. It is a single phase 1/3 HP 115 volt 6.9 amp motor with four wires coming out of it and no schematic... It would seem that the wires are somehow paired as they come out of the motor, T0 and T5 are together, and T1 and T8 are together. The motor has a set of brushes so I assume it is a universal motor. Before I go hooking it up all willy-nilly like, I was wondering if anyone could shed a little insight on this problem. Also, I assume that this motor is reversible, so if anyone could give me a little help on that I would be grateful.

  • How can I make a mold of an icicle?

I'm trying to make a mold of an icicle so I can make decorative concrete icicles. The problem is that I can't think of a way to make a mold that won't melt the ice, but will still be able to set up in the cold. Any ideas?

  • Why do I always feel so bad after I take a nap?

It seems almost any time I take a nap, regardless of time of day or what I have been eating, I wake up feeling super groggy with a stomach ache. I can't figure out what causes it. It usually makes me really uncomfortable and grumpy for about an hour.

  • how do I set up a battery charger in a golf cart?

I am replacing the engine in an old golf cart and I'm not sure how to set up the charger. The old engine used a starter generator and the new one has a standard starter and a simple alternator. Whatever the new engine used for a charger is long gone. The new engine's alternator is built into it's ignition system and is as simple as could be, no rectifier, no regulator. Just straight AC power. As far as I can tell, I can't use anything from the old charging system as its regulator was based off of the starter generator.

  • Charging system for a golf cart?

My dad and I are replacing the engine in a golf cart with a bigger one from a snowmobile. The mechanics of the whole operation are taken care of, but we are not sure about the electrical system. the old engine used a starter generator to start and generate power for the lights and such, but the snowmobile engine has a standard starter motor and an alternator( with only two wires coming out of it) built in. We have no idea what kind of system it used for charging the battery. We have the regulator from the old engine and are wondering if we can use this. It is an old mechanical style one with three connections. D+, D-, and DF. Can we use a full wave bridge rectifier to convert the AC from the alternator into DC and then smooth it out with a capacitor and run that power into the old regulator? I'm not sure how to connect the regulator as we accidentally removed it before taking note of how it was connected. Basically I want it to be able to run the carts lights and recharge the battery after starting.

  • Should I keep using dual cards, or drop one?

I used to use a Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 for my primary monitor and a GeForce 6200 for my secondary monitor. Had problems when I switched to windows 7 so I replaced the 6200 with a GeForce GTS 250. I now use the 250 for my primary monitor and the quadro for my secondary. However, the 250 has two DVI outputs. I haven't had any problems with it, but should I remove my quadro and run both monitors on the 250? I don't know if there would be any benefit in doing this or not.

  • How can I change my Vcore setting while overclocking?

I have recently been interested in overclocking my Dell Precision T3400

Intel core 2 duo Wolfdale 3.0 GHz E8400 4 GB ram

    Windows 7 pro 64-bit

    Nvidia quadro nvs 290 + GeForce 6200

BIOS A05 - does not allow any changes to anything fun!

Ugh, I know, it's a dell so I shouldn't even try, but using setfsb I have gotten up to 3.6 GHz on the CV183APAG clock gen setting. Completely stable. Full load it hardly reaches 50 C on my stock cooler. Anything past that and it blue screens immediately. So I have heard that increasing my voltage will help with that. Currently it is stuck at 1.2 V and wikipedia informs me that my processor is good up to 1.3625. But I haven't been able to find out how I can do this without physically modifying the pins (would rather avoid) So I am wondering if there is any software out there that will let me do this.

  • How can I make a giant spoon?

Well Halloween is fast approaching, and I already have my costume idea. For those of you who have seen the "rejected cartoons" my friend will be dressing up as a banana, and I intend to carry a giant spoon. The banana costume will be easy to find, but how can I make a spoon that's too big? We are looking for around five or six feet in length. My current idea is to take a 1 inch diameter pipe and crush about 1.5 feet of it to bend into the curve of the base of the spoon, then bend it up and around to make the profile of the handle, the rest of it will be straight for the handle itself. After that, I intend weld a ring of tubing from the tip of the crushed end to the other side to make the rim of the spoon. This way the spoon will have a good backbone and will not bend or break easily.

Now this is where I am having trouble. I would like to somehow make a form in which to mold the rest of the spoon out of spray foam. I should be able to form the handle with cardboard or something, but the concave and convex profile of the base of the spoon is really throwing me off. I could form out the concavity and then shape the convex side, but I'm just not sure.

Do you have any ideas to help me out with this project?

  • Are compact fluorescent lights actually better for the environment than tungsten bulbs?

Obviously compact florescent bulbs use less energy, but they contain mercury. I have heard that our supply of tungsten is running short, shorter than oil. So what is worse, the extra power consumption, or the mercury? And of course at this point in time most people just throw out their dead fluorescent bulbs so that mercury is just being released into the environment.
