I'm a college student living in the Philippines (One Big Fight!). I like to read and to run, but not at the same time. I also like George Gershwin and Ben Folds. I usually look for questions to answer in the Books and Authors, Philosophy, Biology, and Music categories.

  • What is a Best Answer, and who decides?

I'm pretty sure that there are answers out there that can knock the socks of the person who asked the question that the answers were for, but weren't recognized by that person because of his or her personal opinion regarding the issue/question/answer. Instead, answers that were in sync with the asker's point-of-view were chosen. Can it be said, then, that not all Best Answers are in fact the best answers? What is "the best"? (What is an answer?) How can the decision be left to the person asking? And if people vote for the Best Answer, what happened to the opinion of the person who asked the question?

  • How would you define "marital fidelity?"?

My father gives my mom lectures about it 'cause he believes she's being unfaithful to him by watching her favorite TV soaps or going out of the house alone to do errands.

What do you think it means? Put in all the details.

  • What do you think of my poem?

    Father

“See the man sitting next to the column?

He’s the brother-in-law of the second cousin of my friend,” he says,

“And the lady in the corner is the mistress of the neighbor of my sister.”

His eyes see off into the distance as we sit in the small café, having brunch.

He gets up to talk to acquaintances about

    The business,

    The farm,

    The dog.

He sits down and ask me if

I’ve got money left in my bank account,

    I eat enough,

    I sleep enough.

    I reply, “Yes,” to everything.

    After all, that’s love,

Knowing everything you need is there,

    Just sitting there,

    Just there.

Friendship isn’t love because there is no need for telephone wires,

    And so friends are despicable,

    But not the phone.

    I chuckle to myself,

At the wisdom the age of legality brings,

    At the world,

    At him,

Staring blankly at the rim of my cup of coffee,

Not knowing what else to do.

  • What's "absolute relativism?"?

From what I've heard, the pope doesn't think it's good. What's up with that?

  • Policy-making, and not merely socio-economic status, affecting prevalence of infectious diseases?

What would be some strong arguments I could use if I were to support this statement in an argumentative research paper? I'll need to back it up with facts (which is actually the part I'm having trouble with, 'cause I can't help but look at the topic and think "Essay!" instead of "Research paper!").

  • Do most pet owners enjoy their pets' company more than the control they have over them?

I read a modernist poem about getting rid of the stench of dog poop and it really struck me that the latter was a plausible reason as to why some people own pets. I personally know someone who's like that.

I think I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask it anyway.

  • Concept or execution, and why?

When it comes to art, do you think what you are trying to say is more important that how you communicate that message? Would a kid's drawing about society's pressure on him to conform have more value to you than, say, a Rembrandt self-portrait? Why, or why not? Remember, I am asking for entirely personal answer.

  • Should I hate my father's dog?

I've always wanted a dog ever since I was a small boy, but I was never allowed to own one because everyone in my family has asthma. I resorted to unofficially adopting my aunt's dog. After almost ten years, when I moved out of the house to go to college, my dad bought a Belgian Malinoise, the very breed of dog that Yahoo! Pets told me was the breed for me. He has bought so many books on dog training that if he gathered all of them in one place he could have a mini-library. He spends more time with "Diva" than he did when I was a kid. My dad made a huge enclosure at the back of the house just for Diva, complete with a roof, electric fan and CD player. A couple of nights ago, when I was at home and it was late at night and Diva was asleep, I got really mad at my dad and I went to the "cage" out the back. I wanted to shout at the dog what I couldn't shout at my dad, but I didn't make a sound. Should I have let it out on the dog? Do I have a right to hate it?

  • What do you think of this poem?

It's one of my first when I started writing poems earlier this year. I was reading a book and drinking grapefruit juice on my dormitory room's balcony when I felt the sudden urge to write a poem about living at home and growing up, even though I never wrote a serious poem before. Anyway, here it is. Let me know if you like it and why, or if you don't like it and why. Thanks!

    Untitled

    I no longer

    feel the need

    to look over

    my shoulder.

    The shadows that

    dance upon

    the windowsill

    and the walls

    beside me come

    from the light

    in the bathroom

    and also

    from the curtains

    that cover

    the windows when

    Sun comes through

    them during the

    day (not night,

    for that's when the

    lack of light

    illuminates

    the garden).

    Looking down from

    Two floors up,

    I jump from the

    windowsill

    to tie up the

    curtains and

    to turn off the

    bathroom light.

  • How do you write good narrative poems?

They're all I end up writing, even when I try to write lyric or dramatic ones (well, maybe they were half-and-half). I don't think they're good, though, so I'd appreciate some tips. (I think I have particular problems with pace and subtlety.)

  • Thoughts on Satie?

I just recently came across a Erik Satie's Trois Gnossiennes and I think it's pretty cool. I like how minimalist these three short pieces are and the use of different scales. I have a hard time getting the touch right, but I always enjoy playing them, especially the first one. Satie's definitely different from the composers I'm used to (I'm play the piano every now and then).

  • What songs have the same chord progression as Canon in D?

The only ones I can think of right now are Spicks and Specks by the Bee Gees, Oh Get Me Away From Here I'm Dying by Belle and Sebastian, and the instrumental piano part of Boston by Augustana.

  • If you enumerate things more than 3 things in a sentence, where do you put the comas and the word "and?"

For example, what's the proper way of writing the phrase "hook line and sinker?"

    A) hook, line and sinker

    B) hook, line, and sinker

Would the number of items being enumerated affect the punctuation?
