  • Need a list of recycle/reusable items for second graders.?

I am a student teacher, working on a lesson plan that involves recycling and reusing materials. I have a list of items that I know the students will be able to decide are part of one group or the other, but now I am stuck. I am trying to think of things we can reuse (like a teapot being painted and used as a vase, or a shoebox as a filing drawer) but that second grade kids will recognize as reusables. I need this list by tomorrow evening of course... Nothing like procrastination! :)

    TIA for all your help!

  • My son wants to take his GF to visit his dad's house, which means an overnight. They are 16! Am I wrong?

Both my ex and the girl's mom have said this will be okay. The reason they are giving is that my son's dad will be taking them to visit an amusement park and since they will be halfway across the state, no one wants to drive her home after the park closes at midnight. I think it is wrong, but can I put a stop to it since it will be during the time my son is at his dad's? And since the girl's mom agrees? Am I just an old-fashioned parent for thinking this is only a step short of saying they are allowed to do OTHER stuff????

  • unusual hair combo, has anyone figured out a great solution?

My daughter has these awesome curls in the back of her hair, but the entire top and side area is straight and even when we curled it for a dance recital, it didn't stay curled well. We recently got her a layered cut to be able to legitimately show off the curls she has (they would stick out of her bob-style cuts after about an hour of playing). But the straight part takes lots of work to make it match the curls even with this cut. We are talking about a 7 year old so lots of work is out of the question!

Has anyone else had this mix of hair types and found a way to make daily hairstyles look nice?

  • Got perfect job after 1.5year search. But previous employees left horrid mess. how to de-stress?

I have been searching for a job in the field of care for adults with developmental disabilities (except for direct care) for nearly a year and a half. Finally got one because the company was desperate to replace some previous employees who had been terrible. The pay is good, and will get to a point of great after training. The flexibility is wonderful, and I am working with a population that I feel strongly needs as much advocacy as possible. The job in and of itself is excellent. The problem is that the mess that was left by the previous employees is overwhelming, and it means that instead of getting training like I really should be, I have had to jump into the job, knowing very little about the processes that I must follow, let alone the individuals of whom I am supposed to be responsible for their care. So I am extremely stressed out and not even positive that I am doing everything even close to correct. What are some suggestions for easing some of the stress? Oh, and I was supposed

  • Need help deciding what to be when i grow up! (and I am 32!)?

I just got turned down for my dream job (working with individuals with disabilities, but at a level that includes a small widespread population). I was the choice of the supervisor but someone in HR chose to hire a different person. The supervisor told me she has always tried really hard to find people that fit as a team, and since the other choice was not HER choice, I am guessing she didn't feel that they will fit the job.

SO..... I can start a new job next week that is doing nearly the same thing, but on a smaller more local scale, that has benefits. However I would have to get a babysitter for my school-age child, and the pay is a little less than I'd like. But if the other job opens back up, I would be a shoe-in. Or I can get my substitute teacher license. No benefits, same pay, and days off with my child. Oh, I am also taking classes to become a licensed teacher that require classroom observations. Job 1 would not allow for this, while subbing would. What should I do???

  • Didn't get the job, but was not because of supervisors choice. Another step? (Read for details)?

I had an interview for a job with the state, and it went really well. When the supervisor sent the candidate recommendation to HR, she also sent me an email to let me know that although she sent information on two people, I had been the candidate of choice. However, she just sent an email today letting me know that someone higher than her or even her own supervisor had made a decision to hire someone else. Because she has been so communicative and todays email sounds almost as though she is not happy with the choice the higher-up made, should I send her another thank you? Basically I am thinking just an email to say thanks again for all the time she gave me and also thanks for keeping me informed about the process. Would that be okay in case the other person doesn't work out, or is that too much? Any other helpful suggestions would be appreciated as well.

  • State job, waiting game?

I had an interview for the perfect state job for me (oversight of the companies that do direct care for individuals with disabilities) on july 24. I did my thank yous, and such, and was emailed that the paperwork for myself ("candidate choice") as well as a second option had been sent to the state HR department. So now the department into which I would be hired is waiting to hear back to make sure they can offer me the position. I am wondering two things. Should I email the department to let the supervisor know I am still excited about the opportunity and to ask if she has heard anything from HR (she also said that because of the nature of the department, they are able to *encourage* HR to move faster on their process so they can hire someone), or if I should just leave it alone at this point. I know that state HR can take months, because my friend interviewed in March for a clerk position and wasn't hired until August, but if it is *encouraged* shouldn't it be sooner?

  • Depression or just stress?

It starts with being a full time student. This past year was my 6th school year, my first as a grad student and I had moved to a different field than my BA as well. I hated the field, and changed again, to one closer to my original goal. I have been doing the same job for almost 2 years and yet searching for a regular full time since I got my BA, but no luck. My hubby hurt his back and makes no money. He's also looking for a less labor-intensive job, also no luck. So because of this, we are barely scraping by. Then my son had som behavior issues that got CPS called which ultimately ended in him going to stay with his dad for a year so he can learn that life is not perfect there. I have been so down about all this that I am completely unmotivated to clean, so my house is a pigsty. However, I also will soon start a state job (Long HR process), & my daughter will be in private school for free. These make me happy, for a while. So will this go away as the problems go, or am I depressed?

  • State job, how long, and also question about salary.?

Had an interview two weeks ago for a small division within the state government (department has 14 people total!) and was told to either call back or she might get with me first. So that Friday, she sent me an email saying there were two possible candidates, and I was one. They would decide Monday (thats a week and a half ago now) and send off the paperwork to the HR department. She said she will call the candidate with the offer as soon as it is approved by HR. So how long does it take a state HR department to approve paperwork on a chosen applicant?

Also she said that the salary is determined by the HR department and that it is not her choice. I have done some research, and found that almost every new hire in our state is paid the midpoint salary of their classification . So whenever she calls, does that mean I should accept whatever salary, or should I attempt negotiation? I have been working for years at only $7-9 an hour, so I'd be ok with the low end even, but more is good!

  • Waiting for job notification; can I do anything?

I had an interview last week, and it went so very well. I knew that the interviewer/supervisor was not going back to the office til Friday, and wouldn't contact references til then. Friday afternoon, two of my references let me know she had called them. Then I saw that the supervisor had also emailed me that the references were great, and that the decision would be made today (Monday), but she was waiting to contact one other reference for one other candidate. Anyway, in the email she said that once they make their decision, they send the forms to HR and when HR sends back the salary, then she "can and will call that candidate." So does that mean I am just stuck waiting until HR approves their candidate to find out? Can I do anything else? (Yes, I did the thank you note and didn't have to call for this information, the supervisor emailed that much on her own.) HELP! I really want to make sure I get this job!

  • How to get the job? Interviewer/Boss took week off immediately after interview!?

So I went last Friday for the interview, and it went really well. I have a friend who works in the same building (Its the state department of health, so she's in a different department, but knows the people). I even used her as a reference so that I would know as soon as they talk to her. But she just told me that the main interviewer who is also the department head has taken the week off. Without starting to sound desperate, or as though I'm keeping tabs on him (which I guess I am), how do I remind him next week that I am the one he wants to hire?

  • Job in new (more professional) field requires out of state training. What to wear?

I haven't had a "professional" job for quite a few years, and have been able to wear jeans and shorts to my current job. Don't fit in my old dressy clothes, and I only have about three nice outfits now. So if I go out of town for the training, which is two weeks, how many outfits should I be taking? I looked at some of the area hotels, and a couple offer free laundry services, and available (not free) dry cleaning services as well.

  • Daughter has opportunity to start 2nd grade at private school, but only til 5th. Is it worth it?

She just tested so she can move into 2nd grade after "kindergarten", which was spent in a 1st grade classroom. This is actually part of the reason she can go, because the younger class is full, but 2nd grade has openings. Its also a Christian school, and though she has not been to church, she has been asking a lot of questions that would be answered to our liking in this location. (I used to teach Sunday School, but I never had to answer questions like she is asking!) But I worry about her having to re-enter the public school system in 6th grade. Do kids that age adjust well, or do they have problems? The kids who attend the private school don't live in the same area as us either, so they would probably all go to different middle schools. I really would like to get as much helpful input as possible before making our decision. When I ask my daughter for her input, she has reasons that are positive and negative, so she will accept my input as long as its reasonable.
