Can I sublease my share of an apartment without my roommate's approval?
I signed a lease for an apartment at school last year, but I got sick and won't be able to go to school next year. My former roommate and I aren't on the best of terms, and he is more than happy to sit back and let me pay rent for an apartment I can't live in. What are my options? I am aware that I can simply not pay the rent (the landlord only wants a lump sum each month, and doesn't care how it gets paid), and my former roommate would have to try to squeeze it out of me later. I have some people interested in subletting. Can I sublet my share of the apartment without his approval if he intends to force me to pay without me living there?
2 AnswersRenting & Real Estate10 years agoI thought I'd ask again.. Is there a religion of American Nationalism?
This is a philosophical question about the definition of religion. I asked it in politics and I think it should be recategorized.
In my world religions class, they describe religions as having 8 overlapping characteristics including: A belief system, community, central myths, ritual, ethics, characteristic emotional experiences, material expression, and sacredness. Examples can be given for each of these out of "secular" American culture. If you believe a deity is a necessity for religion, then you should look at Buddhism. So I ask, should we consider Americanism a religion? or should we create a new defninition?
note: there are a lot of world religion scholars who agree with the statement in the question.... I'm not sure how I feel yet.
here's how American nationalism applies, and these are just a few examples
belief system: "we hold these truths to be self evident..."
community... this one should be obvious.
central myths: whether its fiction like george washington and the cherry tree, paul bunyan, johnny appleseed, or the real stories like valley forge
rituals: the inauguration of the president
ethics: laws
characteristic emotional experiences: reverence for the flag
material expression: statues, monuments, images etc.
sacredness: protection of documents like the declaration of independence or treatment of the flag

3 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoDoes anyone care about the Iraqi people? Or our own people?
One apparently older gentleman just said that he preferred the current wars over the stimulus because "[it] gives people jobs." Apparently he ignores the cost of sending our youth overseas to come back in boxes or with severe physical and emotional wounds. So how can you justify that the war (in Iraq) was worth it. Here are my statistics:
about 100,000 Iraqi civilian deaths
about 19.000 insurgents killed
That's one insurgent for every 5 civilians killed.
The war in Iraq has cost more than 748 billion since it started
that's 39 million dollars spent for every insurgent killed
The federal government spent less than a fifth of a percent of that on the average public school student since the war started.
6 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoDoes a graduated poverty line sound like a good idea to both sides of the political spectrum? All opinions!?
I was thinking about how having a simple poverty line encourages families and individuals to stay under for the benefits. Wouldn't it make sense to have a graduated poverty line that would give more benefits to families that work to advance themselves financially? I felt like it was a more bipartisan solution to the poverty problem.
3 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoIs there something I'm missing about the tax day tea party?
Do I have it right if I say that it's a group of fundamentalist conservatives, who call themselves patriotic while they fly the American flag upside down and publish pictures comparing the current president to Adolf Hitler? Is it true that they disregard the failure of the Articles of Confederation, still believing in state sovereignty? Do they fail to recognize that the out of control spending was initiated by the president that they voted for? It seems that as soon as a president they didn't vote for gets into office, they refuse to pay their taxes. They call themselves patriots, refusing to pay taxes, which is part of their civic duty? They claim to stand for freedom, but choose to support candidates with policies against gay rights? When Bush spends billions protecting us from made up weapons of mass destruction he's protecting our freedom, but when Obama wants to give health care to all the uninsured Americans he's a fascist? Please tell me if I'm missing something. And on top of it all, someone with such a twisted sense of logic and such a profound lack of basic knowledge of history and science can cast a vote worth just as much as mine?
7 AnswersElections1 decade agowho was the philosopher guy on tv?
I'm really mad at myself for not writing this down, but there was this guy on TV in the past few weeks maybe two months who was a philosopher type. He believed in some sort of simplicity and finding joy in small things. when the interviewer guy asked if he would be happy left alone in the room, he said yes. I think the guy was british, but I don't know what channel it was on. I think he had written a book too.
1 AnswerMedia & Journalism1 decade agoneed help with actors?
Hi, I need to come up with some actors who would be good in a survival movie. It's a very serious, sad movie about a father and son who are trying to survive in post-apocalyptic America. Son should be somewhere around 10 or 13, father should be kind of haggard.
3 AnswersCelebrities1 decade agoHow can some of these Republicans call Democrats "sheep"?
when a major part of their party only votes Republican because of Abortion? Is it not "sheepish" to let church leaders influence your vote? Is McCain some sort of becaon of Faith? No, he lies about what his religion is based on his crowd. He's said he's Baptist, (even though he's never been baptized) on multiple occasions. Theocracy is stupid enough when it's not based on lies. Right?
19 AnswersElections1 decade agoi have a question about fiberglass, epoxy, and styrofoam
so, i built myself a foamcore longboard skateboard today and i've hit my first speed bump (figuratively). I basically took some insulation styrofoam and added it to a flat piece of plywood. I then shaped the foam to make the board safer and more comfortable to ride. the foam is soft to stand on, and will get really beat up, so I need to protect it. I was thinking of glassing it with some tough fiberglass, where can i get it, what density of cloth should i use? what epoxy works best with styrofoam and fiberglass, and do you know any other ways to harden the styrofoam so that it will retain its shape?
1 AnswerDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agowhat do you think of my plan for a new US government?
It's mostly a reform on the executive branch. so: the president is chosen just like s/he is now except there will be less of a focus on their political sentiments and more of a focus on how good they are at pleasing the public. voters would go to vote in november, and would vote for, against, or neutral to various issues. The president's responsibility is to make sure these issues are resolved with the peoples' demands in mind. with a near tie, the president will have the responsibility of choosing the path that s/he believes is best for the country and its people. congress can impeach the president at any time, and the president will recieve an evaluation by the people every 4 years. If s/he revieves a disapproval rating greater than maybe 65%, s/he will be impeached, and the vice president would take over for the next term. the presidential nominee would not choose the vice president. the people would. any adjustments? do you hate it? any way I can buy an island and try it?
13 AnswersGovernment1 decade agowhat are you going to do when your candidate/ the other one loses?
please be realistic. What would you do if your candidate won? what if they lost? how would you celebrate/ cope? and don't say "so and so is going to win" I don't even want to know who you support if you say something like that. If Barack wins, I'm going to light fireworks. If McCain wins, I'm going to make myself an anti-fascism t-shirt.

3 AnswersCameras1 decade agoI don't understand the Republican platform, can somebody explain?
Why is it that republicans think "let's keep taxes really low, print so much money that it's essentially worthless 'monopoly money,' fight pointless foreign wars that cost a ton of money and don't protect the American people, and then leave it up to the democrats to fix the huge defeceit."? Are Republicans inherently unreasonable creatures? There is no logic behind this concept. It doesn't work. How can they ignore the problems they create? Someone please tell me!

5 AnswersInvesting1 decade agostupid religious questions????
How come half the atheist on Y!A are always attacking religious beliefs of others? Why can't they just deal with the fact that everyone is happy with their beliefs? Don't they realize that their beliefs or lack thereof is just as annoying to the religious as the religious are to them? How come extremists are always the ones to show the colors so much? I'm fine with atheists, especially when they leave me alone. If you're an atheist or religious and you think i won't change you if you won't change me, start your message with a smiley face. It might earn you ten points. You all need to realize how cheesy and cliche your situation is. You're both the same. You both believe in something and the other side annoys you. Someone should put your nose in the proverbial corner.
