  • Give 6 months notice or 2 weeks notice?

I work in a high tech job and have good relations with my boss and just normal relations with the Director. I've been with this company for well over 5 years and have established some amount of respect and seniority.

For family reasons, I'll be needing to leave the company for a year. I've previously asked for a year leave-of-absence, but it didn't fly (Director doesn't want to set this sort of precedence). After one year, I'd like to come back to this company. I'm confident that they'd have me back too.

Problem is this. I want to give a 6-months notice as a courtesy to my employer. Two weeks would be too sudden and I'm afraid that it would jeopardize my future return. However, if I give 6-months notice, I'm afraid that I could be escorted out that same day.

  • Is "skillset" a word?

Is there such as word as "skillset?" I don't mean "skill set" which are two words. I've already looked up "skillset" at m-w.com and dictionary.com and they say it's not a word.

Maybe they're wrong. It just *seems* to be a valid word to me. And I've seen it used on the internet before. (I know that just because I saw it on the net, doesn't mean it's true/valid/real.) So I'm asking the community to see what you think.

I'm using the word/phrase on my resume and want to get it right.

But obviously, I'll use "skill set" on my resume, just in case.

Anyways, back to the question at hand: is "skillset" a word?

  • What kind of bumper sticker do I have?

I have a political bumper sticker on my car. It's either a pro-Bush or anti-Bush sticker. Recently someone took their key and scraped it up. Since they had time on their hands, they also ran their key all over the bumper as well. What kind of sticker do you think I have on my car? (And how do you come up with your answer?)

  • How to meet neighbors?

I've lived in my townhome community (which means, just about right on top of each other) for a few years. All of us neighbors wave at each other and we all wave back. It would be nice if we could all get together and exchange names! Some sort of social event. Are there any good, proven methods of having a little get-together for neighbors? Something creative and fun that'll peel away shyness?

I've just replaced my microwave-hood (not a small stand-alone microwave). So now I have my old one sitting in my garage? Can I just "throw it out?" Or can I donate it (a non-functioning one)? Etc?

  • Movie Question: How much do the theaters make on each ticket sold?

If I spend $10 on a movie ticket, what percentage of that goes to the theater to pay for the electricity, employees, infrastructure? I was told by a somewhat reliable source that 0% of it goes to the theater and that they have to make all of their money in concessions. What sayst thou?
