6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoAutomobile oil pressure switch?
Are the oil pressure switches on most car engines ----- the one that activates the low oil pressure light----normally off or normally on when the engine is not running and no oil pressure is present. I have one from a honda and it is closed (on) when no pressure present. Just doesn't seem right. The switch has only one electrical terminal and a threaded fitting that screws into the engine oil gallery. I reasoned the switch was designed to close when the engine started and oil pressure was present. That should supply a ground for the light.
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoWelding a boat trailer spring?
The leaf springs of my boat trailer are the slider type. That is, they slide when flexed and are extended, they do not use shackles/hangers---junk in my opinion. To make it even worse the end that slides was sliding across a 3/8" in bolt, not a flat surface. There is now a 1/8" deep X 2" inch long depression worn into a 1/4 inch thick 1 3/4 inch wide spring. I have a mig welder and mild steel wire. Do you suppose I could fill and grind smooth the depression? I am not familiar with welding steel springs .
8 AnswersBoats & Boating10 years agoConnect hour meter to a boat engine?
I added an hour meter to a 40 hp honda outboard engine and connected the power wire to the ignition switch. I want to reconnect the wiring in such a that the clock won't be activated if the switch is inadvertently left on. What wires on the engine are energized only when the engine is running?
7 AnswersBoats & Boating10 years agoWhat is the name of this tool?
I once watched a person drill holes in the sheet metal of a car and place threaded inserts into the holes. He then used a hand tool to expand and secure the inserts then bolted a side view mirror to them. Here are couple of few clues: The tool looked similar to a blind rivet gun; it was owned by a man who used it in his trade which was commercial glass installation; he built aluminum store fronts. I have needed a tool like this occasionally and would like to get one. Thanks

6 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoSupplier of a diode question?
I bought- at a flea market- an older high quality battery charger that does not work. There is an electrical part that appears to be burned out. Also, I'm told this part frequently is destroyed by misuse of this model charger. The part is diode SCR1. I believe that scr is the initial for silicone controlled diode. Where could I find a supplier fo this part? I have tried Radio Shack- no help there. An online supplier would be more convenient for me, but any source will do. The original manufacturer no longer lists parts for this charger. Thanks.
2 AnswersEngineering10 years agovery tiny balls under oak tree?
This time of year in California I begin seeing tiny-----approximately 1/32 inch diameter--seeds..? lying on the ground under oak trees. These things roll and bounce around like mineature Mexican jumping beans. They are so numerous I could scoop up thousands with my hands in a minute or less. I'm guessing they contain insect larve. The colors are brown to beige. Do you happen to know what they are?

1 AnswerDecorating & Remodeling10 years agoDeep cycle marine battery?
I realize a for best efficiency a deep cycle battery (12v) requires a deep cycle charger. I already have 4 12v chargers. They range from a trickle charger, 6-10 AMP charger , 10 amp automatic charger and 10amp charger, I sure don't want to buy another one, but none are rated for deep cycle batteries. I have a deep cycle battery in a boat that powers a trolling motor, I usually charge it with one of my conventional chargers. Is a deep cycle charger going to be af any real benefit to me?
4 AnswersBoats & Boating10 years agoAutomobile engine oil question?
I bought a five quart container of Valvoline 5w-30 engine oil today. I noticed the 3/4 inch diameter circle on the container that lists the api service (SN) and viscosity (SAE 5-30) no longer reads "energy conserving". It reads "resource conserving". I believe the older label indicates the oil contained special additives. Is the oil I purchased different and of lower quality?

6 AnswersSTDs10 years agoBuilding framing question?
I live in a house in California that was constructed in the mid 1970's. I remember when it was framed strips of building paper were placed between all window nail flanges and the 2x4 framing. What is the purpose of this paper? Was the rest of the framing likely wrapped in building paper before the 4'x8' sheets of wood siding nailed into place, or just the windows? I am replacing the windows and trying to get an idea of what I might encounter.

2 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoMotorcycle valve adjustment?
I am adjusting the valves on the engine of a 2006 kawasaki 900 vulcan. The job requires removing and replacing some of the shims that sit on top of the valve stems. The shims come in different thicknesses varying a few thousandths of an inch. The rocker arms contact these shims and push the valves open. Here is the meat of my question: The shims are made of steel. Imagine having a round steel rod about 1/4 inch in diameter and slicing it into sections about 1/8 inch long. This pretty well describes the shims. The factory warns against filing these down even a few thousandths of an inch. They claim this might cause them to break and cause engine damage. I think them breaking is nonsense and they want to discourage filing so they can continue selling replacements for 6 to 8 dollars apiece. But, I am not willing to take a chance and file these. there might be something I am overlooking though I cannot imagine what. Any opinions on this. Have you ever filed and removed about 4 thousandths of an inch on one of these and used it successfully. Just wondering. Thanks for your attention
4 AnswersMotorcycles1 decade agoIndian foods question?
I am a big fan of spicy Mexican foods. I am not at all familiar with Indian cusine, but understand it can be very spicy/hot, which I like. I would like to sample it. What would you recommend I try on my first visit. I am slightly diabetic and can't have too many carbs or sugars. I have found certain mexican dishes that I can eat in small quantities and am hoping to do the same with Indian foods.
