If you roll a standard shift car with the key on and pop the clutch with it in gear it will start. Why does that happen and why can't you do that in a car with an automatic transmision?

I have a '91 Jeep Wrangler with a 5 speed standarrtd shift. Some times I can't move the shift lever and have to really press hard on it to get it out of gear and into the next. It only happens when at a stand still or at very slow speeds (going from 1st to 2nd in traffic), never when driving highway. The clutch was replaced about 10,000 miles ago.
