My daughter (8 yrs old) got a welsh x, 15 yr old pony on loan for christmas. He's an absolute darling and she adores him. however, before we got him he was being used as a riding school pony. He's fine when she rides him with other ponies in her weekly lesson, but when she tries to ride him on her own he won't move forward, tries backing up and if she does get him to move he's very reluctant about it. She's nervous of using a stick on him as she had a couple of bad falls a while back (off a different pony) and is worried in case he takes off. As she's only 8 she doesn't have the strengh to ride him forward when she needs to. my personal feeling is that he's got too reliant on having another pony to follow and is now nervous/anxious about going on his own. .He will follow me around the school if I walk in front of him, but obviously this isn't ideal and isn't solving the problem. This is starting to affect my daughters confidence - any suggestions on how to deal with it?
