Is it my CPU or Motherboard at fault?
A couple of weeks ago my computer shut down unexpectedly. I immediately tried to turn it back on, but nothing happened. After a couple of minutes, it powered back up fine.
Then, yesterday morning, I turned on the PC, the fans and HDD came on, but nothing on screen and no POST or beeps from the system speaker. Also the mouse and keyboard lights do not illuminate. I have tried all of the following and get the same result each time (fans on, power seems to flow, but no screen output):
1. Stripping down to barebones (CPU, 1 RAM stick, PSU with an without a videocard)
2. Reset CMOS
3. I have 2 RAM sticks, so I have tried each one separately in barebones setup
4. Tested PSU with PSU tester and with HDD load on the PSU
5. I even tried without a RAM stick and still no system beeps
6. Cleaned any dust etc away
7. Tested screen and monitor cable work fine
Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the problem? I'm guessing that this is going to be a motherboard or CPU problem.
I don't have any spare parts or another PC to swap bits with either. and have had no problems with the computer for over a year, I also have made no changes to any hardware for over a year and it was working as well as ever. Help, please :-)
4 AnswersOther - Hardware1 decade agoNeed help identifying car squeal?
I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla (British built). I have an intermittent noise coming from the front wheels (seems to be both left and right). The noise is a squeal and sounds similar to a light brake squeal.
I get this noise every now and again, and it comes and goes. It's not related to the speed I am doing, and seems not to change a huge amount if I speed up or slow down, however I cannot hear it if I am stationary.
Although the noise is audible when I am not braking, if I brake heavily, the noise sometimes goes away, however if I brake gently, the noise seems to stay. I recently had a service and both front brake pads are still about 80%.
Any ideas?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoHow do mobile phone networks justify charging for Wi-Fi?
If you don't have an unlimited data plan, some mobile operators charge for using Wi-Fi internet. How is this justifiable? My logic is the hardware picks up an existing Wi-Fi connection and so therefore has no contact with the mobile network and doesn't use it at all? Why does using Wi-Fi cost?
1 AnswerCell Phones & Plans1 decade agoLooking for clear material that you can see through from one angle but not from another?
Okay, this is a tricky one. I am looking for clear sheeting which can be placed in front of an image. If you are directly in front of the image, you should be able to see through the sheet and look at the image, however if you are not directly in front (say outside 30 degrees) the image should be blurred or obscured in anyway.
It's for a fun marketing idea I am working on. Does anyone have any ideas?!?
Lenticular printing is not really possible, as the images already exist and I cannot 'reprint' them.
2 AnswersPhysics1 decade agoWant to learn ruby on rails... Where do I start?
I want to learn to code so I can start writing my own applications, problem is, I don't know where to start... I am not a developer so have very little knowledge.
Can anyone recommend a good book or something: Currently I know a bit of HTML and CSS, but only enough to put together basic static sites.
I want to begin being able to build e-commerce sites or mini communities, but need to know where to start (and it'll have to be from the beginning too).
p.s. I'd be better with a book, rather than an online resource. thanks!
4 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoWithdrawing cash in Ireland charges?
I am travelling from England to Ireland tomorrow. I have Euro cash already but, if I want more what will the charges be? I have a Maestro card issued by Natwest.
What will the charge be for withdrawing €100 from a Irish cash machine and/or spending €100 in a restaurant?
Thanks in advance...
3 AnswersOther - Ireland1 decade agoSelling alcohol online. What are the UK laws?
Can anyone please point me to some guidance on the rules and regulations of selling alcohol online. I am looking to set-up a business that will be selling the alcohol.
If it helps, I am not looking to sell the alcohol as the main part of my business, instead, I intend to sell them as a supplementary product. For example if you order flowers online you also get offered champagne and chocolates as a supplement...
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoPlease help with hot water heater...?
Hi, I've just moved into a new flat and I can't seem to work out how to get enough hot water. I'm not getting get enough for two short showers in the morning.
It's a fully electric heater, as there's no gas in the flat. It is meant to take advantage of the cheap electricity rate during the night.
Currently we have the following set:
Bottom (night auto) heater: 4am to 6am
Top (boost) heater: 5pm to 6pm.
We've experimented all week and have even had the night auto heater on from 11.30pm to 6.30am and still didn't have enough hot water for a bath at 9am.
The flat was built in 2004 so I am thinking it's probably me doing something wrong as opposed to an equipment issue.
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.

I have a windows vista 64bit operating system installed on my PC. I would like to find out what all the fuss is about and play about with a version of Linux, either Ubuntu or Fedora.
What I would like is to turn on my PC and choose which operating system I load. Can anyone point me in the direction so I can do this please?
Alternatively swapping to Linux whilst I am in Vista would be okay. Vista is what I use primarillay and cannot get rid of it, but do want to try out linux.
5 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoDo credit card companies extend 0% deals to keep you?
I have a Halifax credit card that had a 9months 0% on purchases deal. I pay the balance off each month, but I like to have the 0% just in case I have a big month and don't want to pay it all off at once.
The 0% deal has now expired and I would normally get a new card with a good deal and cancel the old one, but is it worth asking them to extend the deal to keep my custom, say for 6 more months?
What do you think? Has anyone had any experience with credit card companies doing this type of thing to keep business?

2 AnswersProgramming & Design1 decade agoIf I lose my job do benefits help with rent? (UK)?
I currently have rent of £800 a month and council tax of £120 which I share with my girlfriend.
I am terrified I will be losing my job soon, and there is nothing I can do about it. If I do lose my job, and I struggle to get another any time soon my girlfriend would not be able to cover all of the payments.
Do benefits help with rent payments, even if shared between two people?
