  • Opinion on this poem?

    Some Shades of Blue

    A capriccio in C minor

    Colored my afternoon,

    Polychrome words, surprising me in both structure and balance;

Moving changes, a few purple, fewer black,

Mingle on the walls with the shadows of hands and arms,

    And the talk goes on.

    I think of a couch

    Where, half dreaming, I heard

    Voices from a kitchen,

    Apart, some rooms away,

    Announcing my name;

    And china, cautiously handled,

    Sounded grace notes

    Between the slow purple chords.

  • Is there anyplace to get a good, free, convenient stock market ticker for desktop?

I used to have an attractive stock market ticker that showed slightly delayed stock prices as well as market indexes and scrolled across the top of my laptop screen. You could add or remove stocks from the display so that you only saw the ones you were interested in. It looked good and worked flawlessly. There was no advertising and no obligation to trade or do anything else. Purely an informational gadget. Does such a thing still exist or did it fall victim to the rule that all good things must be stopped immediately?

  • Is there a way to get Yahoo! News to restore my ability to comment on their stories?

For several weeks now I've been unable to make comments on Yahoo! News stories. When I click 'Post a Comment" nothing happens, no box appears to enter a comment. I've noticed that this is always accompanied by the little spinning loading symbol, even though the story is fully loaded. Thousands of other comments appear, so it isn't a technical problem on the site. Also, the thumbs up/thumbs down symbols and the Reply links don't appear.

  • Is Yahoo! News Suppressing Comments on Political Stories That Are Contrary to Their Own?

I find I can no longer post comments on political stories in Yahoo! News. I wonder if it's because my opinions differ from those of the editors. Does anyone else experience the same thing?

  • Can two different computer disc image backups be put on one external hard drive?

The worry here is that trying to put a second disc image on the same external drive might overwrite the first one. Easy to say just create separate partitions or folders or use different file names for the backups, but I can't see any way to do this. One mistake in doing this might wipe out some very important things, so you have to know what you are doing. You can't experiment. Unfortunately tech support people aren't always right about these things.

  • How can I replace Internet Explorer 9 with Internet Explorer 8?

My new laptop came with Internet Explorer 9 installed. I used my previous computer to do the Wall St. Journal on-line crossword puzzles. It had Internet Explorer 8 installed and was entirely compatible with the WSJ puzzles. My new computer with IE 9 installed will not do the WSJ puzzles. Microsoft suggested that I remove IE 9 and replace it with IE 8, and were going to send a procedure for doing so. However, the procedure does not appear to be coming. Anyone know how to do this replacement?

  • How can I get rid of this Live Mail annoyance?

When I open Windows Live Mail, a box pops up saying, "You were locked out because an error occurred in signing in", or words to that effect. The problem happened days ago and the program is no longer locked, but that message will not go away. If I Okay it, it initiates a new log-in followed by a security check and then cycles back and forth endlessly. If I Cancel it, it goes away and lets me do e-mail, but it's right back there every time I open Live Mail. Anyone know how to remove this annoyance?

  • Is the HP Time Turner good or bad?

If you read the reviews from people who bought the Harry Potter Time Turner at the Warner Bros. Web store, some say it is a wonderful keepsake necklace and others say it is a flimsy gumball toy. Who is right? I have a grabddaughter who is crazy about Harry Potter stuff and I want to give her a durable gift she will like a lot.

  • Why did Sonny Jergensen leave Philadelphia?

In 1964, star NFL quarterback Sonny Jergensen was traded by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Washington Redskins. He had many years left to play and set many records in those years at Washington. Why did Philadelphia, a town he loved and a team he loved to play for, trade him away at the height of his powers? If you have 'inside' knowledge about this, I would like to hear it, mainly to dispel a disparaging rumor I have heard.

  • Why are comments missing on some Yahoo News articles?

On some Yahoo News articles, I can see only one of the comments (and sometimes a fraction of a second one) and when I try to post a comment, the pop-up box for signing in is totally blank. Anyone know why this happens on some articles and not all of them? Anyone know how to see the rest of the comments and be able to add a comment?

  • How old do you have to be to write this?

    The Game of Hearts

We played at hearts that day she stayed,

    And while we played, she took mine fast away;

She led the Queen, the dark-eyed Spade,

And won all hearts, the Deuce and then the Trey.

And then the rest, until the loss I could not long delay.

Since then, we’ve played so many times,

    I dare not count,

    Or, counting, say.

But in the ‘playing’ do I know

    It is no longer play.

  • what happened to the Old Munich restaurant in Brunswick, ME?

I went up there from Rochester, NY to see an art exhibit at Bowdoin College and wanted to go to this great sounding German restaurant I found on Expedia. But when I went to the address, there was no restaurant there.

  • Your comment is earnestly solicited. Any questions?

    An Observation, in Brief

I turned left unto my love

    And do so still;

    Whilst newer obligations

    I must now fulfill,

I turn left unto my love,

    And always will.

  • When I was young (don't ask) ...?

... in Niagara Falls, Canada, there was a second-floor canopied terrace restaurant with a frontal view of the falls where you could eat a very decent poached salmon with a glass of wine while enjoying the view, the air and a faint mist on your face. It was set back from the river in a little park. Is it still there? What is it called now?

  • Where oh where is Windows Movie Maker?

I downloaded it (twice). Couldn't find it on my machine. Nosed around in Control Panel > Programs and Features and found it is part of Windows Live Essentials and even was able to repair it, but still can't find it to use it. Anyone know where to look?

  • Is this a plausible scenario?

    “What’s going on here?”

“Oh, I’m glad to see you officer. I’ve locked myself out and I was afraid someone might think I was trying to break in.”

“No problem. We just have to see ID that shows you live here.”

    “How’s this?”

“Perfect. This says you‘re a professor at the university?”

    “Yes.”

“If you want, we can open that door for you.”

“Thanks, if you would. I think I’ve left the key in my suitcase. I’m just getting back from a trip.”

    “There you go.”

    “Many thanks.”

    “Take care.”

  • What were the last words spoken in the movie "Dr. Strangelove"?

Not the last words sung, but the last words spoken. Can you explain their implication?

  • Do you have an opinion on Ode to a Toad?

Little toad, I see the matter,

You heard my mower's clank and clatter,

You feared your grassy tent would shatter,

    Then where'd you be?

I don't have time to stop and chatter

But if you'd been just one inch fatter

Your quick pulsing throat would be asplatter

    On my Linden tree..

  • Have you seen this couple somewhere?

When games we played we’ll no more play,

When hopes are lost by long delay,

When memories fade and slip away,

(Some were sad but more were gay)

When kind heads and limbs are gaunt and gray,

I’ll rue it all but still I’ll say

    We had our time.

    We did our bit.

And if you’ll grant us one more day

    We’ll make sublime

    Use of it.
