  • Der Lehrer hat ihm einen Block gegeben.?

I'm using Rosetta Stone to learn German. They use der Block for notebook, but when I look it up, der Block translates to 'the block' in English. The lesson I'm on right now is confusing me.

The picture shows a kid holding a notebook.

The words say - Der Lehrer hat ihm einen Block gegeben.

The voice says - Der Lehrer hat ihm ein Heft gegeben.

What's the deal? I haven't learned das Heft yet, but when I look it up it translates to about 13 different things including issue, magazine, hilt, notebook...

What's right? Are they both right? Which would be normally used in Germany?

  • Al-anon, Nic-anon and other 12 step programs?

I was looking into nic-anon to get a support group or something for quitting smoking. I had no idea it was a religious group. I'm atheist and have a few questions about it.

    1. is there a version of these programs that doesn't require god? being atheist, i feel that if i 'put it in god's hands' ill smoke until the day i day.

    2. how is it legal for courts to order drunk drivers to attend a religious group? i've had several friends ordered to attend AA after getting DUIs

  • zwo ober zwei, german?

Zwo or Zwei? I'm learning German and everything I'm learning says zwei.

Rammstein song says Links zwo, links zwo, links zwo drei vier...

was just watching a german episode of Die Simpsons, they said vier, drei, zwo...

WTF?! so confused. zwo would be so much easier, as ive only been learning for a few months and i mix up zwei and drei all the time. but i dont want to sound like a retard and say zwo when it doesnt belong.

  • Kugelschreiber or Stifte?

    Rosetta Stone says Stifte.

    Livemocha says Kugelschreiber.

On both, they are pens. Is it just personal choice or what?

Google translate says Stifte means pencils. WTF? Wouldn't be surpised though. Not entirely happy with Rosetta Stone.

  • dvds with german audio track?

I'm learning German and would like some movies with a German audio track. Where can I find a list? Or how can I find out if they have it. Everything I have seen usually has English, Spanish, and French.

  • Sounds that English native speakers can't say.?

I was just wondering if there are any stereotypes for English speakers not being able to say certain sounds.

Like how people say Japanese people can't say L sounds.

    Something like that.

And when a non-english native is doing a stereotypical impression of English, what does it sound like?

  • Wasche, Waschen, Wäsche?

Is there a study guide that anyone knows of for what I guess would be German tenses?

    example:

    waschen

    wasche

    wäscht

Rosetta Stone does a HORRBILE job of teaching this. I know they all mean 'wash' in some form, but have no clue when to use each one.

  • How do you pronounce this in German?

I've been learning German with Rosetta Stone. On the numbers, zwanzig, dreißig, vierzig, etc....

is it pronounced SIG or SICH? Rosetta Stone sounds like swan-sich. Other places it sounds like swan-sig. Which one is it? Or is it something completely different?

    Vielen dank.

  • What's up with Zune?

Sometimes when I load music into my library, it separates each track as an artist. For example, when I load Pressure Chief by Cake, instead of making the artist Cake, it makes it artist 01, 02, 03, 04 etc....

The ID3 tags are correct. I edited them myself. No matter what I do, I can't get this to load correctly. There are a few other albums that do similar things.

  • Is there such a thing as a deadbeat mother?

I was just reading some questions, and it seems like all the women on here seem to think that men are to be responsible for 100% of a child's expenses and some of the mother's expenses. I'm not saying that all women are like this, I've just noticed an increased number of them. They seem to think that since they are female, they deserve custody of the children and expect a man to work 3 jobs to support the child and the mother. If the women are so much better at being a parent, and think that they automatically deserve custody, why don't they deserve the responsibilites that come with being a parent. I feel that women have too much power when it comes to children. And they tend to use the children as a weapon during a divroce or separation. I know I'm going to catch a lot of flak for this quetion and probably not get an honest answer, but please put emotions aside and answer honestly. By the way I'm happily married, so don't think I have any bias.
