I have a non-violent Michigan felony over 25 years that's haunting me to this day. Is the grave retribution?
The State of Michigan does not allow records to be expunged... ever. At age 17 I broke into a storage shed behind a gas station and stole beer. Yes, it was wrong and yes, I paid. This happened in the very conservative town of Hastings, Michigan and believe it or not I was sentenced to 6-10 years in prison. I am 45 years old now and have been disenfranchised from the work force. To this day my record keeps employers from hiring me. Sure, I have obtained under the table employment and have found a few small jobs that do not do background checks but, that is the extent of it. I paid my way through school and received a Masters Degree thinking this would finally allow me to live a mainstream lifestyle, how could I have been so naive? Careers that require a Masters Degree all perform in depth background checks. When is retribution paid? Retirement? Social security? I will undoubtedly receive neither. Is there any advocacy groups for ex-offenders that I have failed to find?

I am a civilian contractor in Iraq and am very limited on the internet due to SmartFilter. I am unable to access yahoo personals, 360, yahoo messanger and many more sites. When I try to go to a proxy site that is also blocked and we do not have admin privilage either. Who ever can help us out here gets 10 well deserved points; I'd give you 10,000 if I could.
