27/m/CA I'm a PhD student studying Astronautical Engineering at the University of Southern California. My research includes a hovering lunar lander prototype and the guidance, navigation & control systems for a microsatellite test bed. I hope to one day be an astronaut.
Have my taxes gone up or down since Obama took office?
Single filer, ~$40k/year. I'd like to know how much it changed...
A link to what you used to figure it out would be helpful. Thanks!!!
1 AnswerOther - Taxes1 decade agoAtheists/Christians -- can you defend it?
Role reversal.
Christians and Atheists, present your best arguments for the OTHER position. (i.e., if you are Christian, what are the best arguments AGAINST god's existence? ...if you are Atheist, what are the best arguments FOR god's existence?)
PLEASE state what you actually are first, because it's very hard to tell sarcasm in the context of this question.
Most convincing case wins... Good luck. :)
23 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoVery Advanced Controls Question?
First things first, check out the problem:
http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/2172/project%20s...
Now, I don't need an answer (there's 5 more parts to this project anyway), but just a hint on how to get started with estimating the disturbance...
Do I make the disturbance its own state? Do I solve a simultaneous system of equations after adding an observer to the base system?
I'm just a little lost...

4 AnswersJokes & Riddles1 decade agoWhy did God put the tree of good and evil in the garden if he didn't want them to eat from it?
And since He's omniscient, He knew they were going to eat it.
And also, since He's all-powerful, if he didn't want them to eat it, how were they able to resist the Almighty Will? I can't even resist gravity.
Is there anything that God wants that we can prevent from happening?
36 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDoes Free Will include freedom from God's Will?
14 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf God wants something to happen, is there any way that it cannot happen?
Follow-up question to No: Therefore if God wants us to believe in him, is there any way we can resist without Our Will being greater than His Will?
Follow-up question to Yes: Then why call him God?
Think about it...

5 AnswersThanksgiving1 decade agoPossibly a tough Moment of Inertia question?
Parallel axis theorem is I = Io + Md^2
So say I have two spheres, equal weight and size, and I have a massless rod to hang them on. In one case I put the spheres on opposite ends and rotate about the middle of the rod -- it's really easy. In the second case I put both spheres on one end and try to rotate about the same point on the rod, it's much harder. This makes sense intuitively...
However, with a d-squared term, the moment of inertia shouldn't depend on where I put the spheres:
Case 1: I-total = Isphere + M(-D)^2 + Isphere + M(D)^2
Case 2: I-total = 2 * ( Isphere + M*(D)^2 ), which is the same.
But why, if the MOI is the same for both cases, is the balanced rod much easier to rotate?
It makes sense in my head, but not mathematically...
Thanks!

I can understand giving hints. But seriously, you are doing these students a huge disservice by doing the problems for them.
Are you just so helpful as to be blinded to this fact, or are you just so unappreciated that any measure of feeling important is too much to resist?
Give hints, not answers.
11 AnswersOther - Science1 decade agoChristians, would you still be faithful?
Hypothetical question, go with me on this:
Hell still exists, but Heaven does not. If you accept Jesus, when you die, God says to you "You are forgiven through my Son, you may rest in peace." And you cease to exist. 100% annihilation. (Painless, but you're gone forever).
On the other hand, if you don't accept Jesus, you live forever, but you are no longer in God's grace. You're forsaken to an ugly Earth in which Satan reigns. Sex, drugs, lying, torture, rape, and murder all occur every single day to hundreds of people.
...but you live forever.
Would you still choose God and annihilation, or forever on this planet? And why?
I'm just curious.
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians, do you know the history of Jesus?
He was copied largely from an Egyptian God called Horus.
http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_jcpa5.htm
Some things they have in common:
* Both are only children of a god with Joseph as a foster father, born under a star, and witnessed by shepherds.
* Neither has any details between the ages of 12 and 30.
* Both resist temptation on a high mountain.
* Both were crucified next to two thieves, died and buried in a tomb, descend into Hell but resurrect after three days.
* Both are foretold to come again and reign for 1000 years.
The Egyptian Horus God appeared in writings about 4 to 7 centuries before Christ. Does that bother any of you?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat are the biggest hypocrises of each political party?
The best answer will be one that lists them for both Demo's and Repub's.
Example:
(R) Markets itself as the party of a "culture of life," yet supports the Death Penalty and the War in Iraq.
(D) Doesn't believe in "legislating morality," but has no problem when it comes to increasing the tax on cigarettes.

No embedded counterarguments! This should be tough for everyone.

3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs God certain of his knowledge? (read details)?
Imagine a universe in which there is an all-powerful demon. This demon, one day, decides to play a practical joke. He creates a spirit, calls it God, and makes God believe itself to be all-knowing, all-loving, and all-powerful. But because the demon is actually all-powerful, it hides from God the truth -- that God is not all-powerful, he just thinks he is.
Therefore, can even God be certain of his knowledge?
If so, then why? (where does the thought experiment break down)
If not, is certainty ever attainable?
Let's see how many people even read this far...
