How can I make a block of wood with a bolt sticking out that won't spin?
I'm trying to attach a chair seat to the chair frame. I want to glue the block of wood to the bottom of the seat (so the top of the block has to be flat) with the bolt sticking down from the block. The bolt will stick through a hole in the chair frame and I'll use a wing nut to secure the bolt. But if the bolt can spin freely in the wood block, the nut will just spin the bolt instead of tightening. So I need to make sure the bolt won't spin.
3 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 year agoDoes any prepaid phone plan let me turn texting on and off remotely?
I would like a prepaid phone plan for my teenager where I can deactivate text messaging at will. I need to control it through the carrier's website, without having access to the teenager's phone. Installing a parental control app on the phone isn't going to work, as she knows how to wipe the phone and remove it. Does any such plan exist?
3 AnswersCell Phones & Plans2 years agoHow much money would it take for you to retire on the spot?
Imagine someone is offering to pay you a lump sum if you agree on the spot to never work again. How much money would they have to offer for you to say yes immediately, without taking any time to go over your finances and run the numbers?
If you're already retired, this question obviously doesn't apply to you!
4 AnswersPersonal Finance3 years agoCan I put nails in the door between the house and the garage?
I want to use nails to hang something on the door between the house and the garage (the person-size door, not the rollup door for the car), but someone told me you shouldn t do that. The reason was because if there were a fire in the garage, the nails in the door could help it spread into the house. Is this true? If so, can anyone point me to a reference about it?

It s about two thirds of the way from Mizar to Alcor but off to one side a bit. It s almost at the limit of what I can see with 8x56 binocs in a suburban area.

10 AnswersPolls & Surveys6 years agoHow should I learn chess strategy (NOT tactics)?
Until recently, my games were all won or lost on tactics and whose pieces were left hanging. But now my lack of a general game plan is starting to hold me back. How do I develop that sense of what to focus on during the game, beyond looking for the next fork, pin, etc.?
2 AnswersBoard Games6 years agoWhich Android phones have these features?
I'm looking for an Android phone with these features:
-Available on AT&T
-Uses both 5Ghz and 2.5 Ghz WiFi
-Removable battery
-Slide-out keyboard
I want to buy it used, so it doesn't have to be a phone that the carriers currently offer.
3 AnswersCell Phones & Plans8 years agoWhat's the most fuel efficient used car I can get for $6000?
I'd like something with 4 doors and automatic transmission, and newer is better, but not more than $6000. What used car, meeting those criteria, would give me the best fuel efficiency?
2 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoWhat's the strangest thing you've ever seen while driving on a freeway?
For me, it was probably a love seat bouncing off the front bumper of an SUV.
Either that, or the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. I wasn't expecting to see a giant hot dog barreling down the interstate at 60 MPH. It was a very Seussian moment.
How about you?

5 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoHow can I help my 5 year old learn to get dressed quickly by herself in the morning?
She knows how to get dressed, of course, but she dawdles and plays around and takes a long time. I want her to get in the habit of doing it quickly, because she's starting kindergarten in the fall!
13 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoDoes it matter that the gutter on my roof is slanted away from the downspout?
The end with the downspout is slightly higher, so there's an inch or so of water at the other end that won't drain out. Do I need to fix that?

6 AnswersPolls & Surveys1 decade agoWhat recent movie has the scene where the construction crane crashes through the window?
It came out in the last year or so. A guy is in a high-rise office, and gets a phone call that he has to leave the room in ten seconds or die. In the background, you can see the crane swinging towards the window. Some mysterious people want to recruit him for something. What movie was that?

We just had eight years of tax-cuts-for-the-rich policy, and what do we have to show for it?
20 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoShould I fill in screw holes with wood putty before replacing the screws with longer ones?
My door hinge is loose because the screw holes are enlarged and the screws are wiggling in the holes. Before I put longer screws in, should I fill in the holes with wood putty or something? I don't want the longer screws to start wiggling too.
