  • Dental problem, has anyone had a similar experience?

When I was 12 I have a lot of deep fillings in my teeth, but since this time, I have always looked after my teeth well, using floss daily and visiting my dentist every 6 months. I have been to the same dentist for about 25 years, and am a private patient (in London). For the last 18 months, I've had some discomfort on one side of my mouth. It seemed to start when I had a massive filling in an upper left molar (I don't think I have any upper wisdom teeth, so it would be the upper 7) The dentist only just managed to save the tooth.

Since then, I sometimes experience pain when biting on that tooth, and also from time to time an unpleasant taste (like decay) I have told the dentist and he has re-filled the tooth - but it didn't seem to change the problem. In the last two weeks, my jaw has been aching a bit and every time I eat anything hot or cold, it's very painful. The problem is that I can't exactly locate which tooth the pain is coming from. It could be the upper molar, or it could be any one of the lower molars!

I explained this to my dentist last week and he didn't seem to understand why I couldn't locate which tooth it was. He probed nd couldn't find anything obvious, so he redid a large filling on the lower left 6 molar. A week later, the pain is unchanged. I am now wondering if more than one tooth is involved, the upper molar and also the lower 7 molar, which is a crown. The crown has been there for oer 25 years...and so it could well be due for some treatment. I had x rays on my last visit 7 months ago and nothing showed up then. I have an appointment to go back to the dentist for a scale and polish, but am a bit worried that he will just say that nothing showed up on the x rays. Like many people, I am very nervous of dental treatment and of my dentist. The pain is, so far, manageable (all my food and drinks have to be luke warm...) But I'm concerned that the longer this goes on,it's not good for my health.(I also have a chronic ear problem on the same side for over a year and wonder if this is connected to the dental problem)

Any thoughts or advice would be helpful.

  • Help in choosing a gift for a 60 year old lady?

Please suggest ideas for a gift for a lady who will be 60 in September.

She is a sensitive, artistic person who lives on her own with her cat. She has been a family friend for 25 years and is Godmother to my son. We would really like to buy her something special - the budget is not that important, say about £50.00 - £100.00.

    Thank you!

  • The orginal Star Wars film?

Star Wars was voted number one favourite on a tv poll of best ever films. I've never seen any of the Star Wars films, so I thought it was time to watch it. Then I went on Amazon to buy the film...and I couldn't decide which is the frst one. I spent ages searching the prequels and sequels - and ordered what I thought was a boxed set of the first three films.

Everyone in the family was excited - even the cat, who sat expectantly in front of the tv. After a drum roll, we took the 3 dvds out ....and realised - we had mysteriously been sent one of the sequels, not the original film. We decided not to watch these, as we want to see the original number one, first Star Wars film where it all began!

The next day I went on Amazon again - and still can't be sure which is the first film. There are so many spin offs!

Please help us! How can we recognise this first Star Wars movie?

  • Ideas for pre-Christmas break?

I'd like to organise a short break for myself, partner and son 22. We've all had an exhausting time with bereavements (partner) end of long-term relationship (son) and job (me)

We are based in London. Partner is a teacher and can't escape before Saturday 18th December. Son insists that he wants to be at home for Christmas! So it will have to be a very short break, say 3-5 nights. Originally I wanted to go somewhere warm enough to swim - but now think that would be too long a journey time for such a short break.

So - the idea now is for a short break to a city in Europe. Perhaps somewhere with a Christmas market....perhaps rooms in a luxury hotel with a pool and perhaps a gym or even a spa. The budget is about £1,500.

Which city do you recommend? If you know of any hotels too, this would be a bonus! Thank you.

  • Ideas for screening please?

I would like advice on a new plant to help with screening. The garden is small - about 40 feet long by 19 feet wide. There are high fences and I have planted climbing roses and a bamboo on both sides, which works really well. I would now like to plant something in the centre of the garden, to make it less open and provide screening. There is already a large tree stump there which has been turned into a table to sit at, and so ideally, the plant would be about 6-10 feet high but quite narrow - say about 2-3 feet, if possible! It would be planted to the side of the tree stump. This part of the garden is in full sun.

Any ideas welcome. I wondered about another clump forming bamboo or unusual grasses? (But have a cat who eats ornamental grass) Alternatively, a flowering shrub? It doesn't have to be evergreen, although that would be nice. Something quite delicate would be nice - so not a laurel plant or similar.

    Thank you!

  • Do leylandii type conifers do damage to house foundations?

I loive in a small terraced house and two years ago, my neighbour and I planted a selection of shrubs on the part of the front garden that is between the two houses. One of the ones she planted was a tiny conifer that has developed into a 5 foot tall Leylandii...I like it as it provides some screening from the road, (even though I'm guessing it will reach about 20 feet in time)

However my neighbour wants to dig it up because she's afraid it will damage the house foundations. It is about 8 feet away from the doorways. Any advice would be welcome, thank you!

  • Advice on re-planting bamboo plant?

Two years ago, I planted a bamboo plant too close to other plants in the garden. It now needs to be dug up, and hopefully, replanted - any tips on the best time of year, etc? It's in a small garden in London. Thank you!

  • Advice on decorating hairine cracks?

I moved into my house 18 months ago. Most of the house had been recently re-plastered and painted magnolia. Some very noticeable long hairline cracks have appeared in one room, which is annoying, as I was not going to re-decorate for a while! Three of the walls have been effected, it seems quite random, some at the top and some at the bottom of the walls.

Advice on how to treat this before re-painting? (After all, I don't like magnolia) Thank you.

  • Winter fishpond advice please?

Hi! Recently posted a question about small Koi. Have done a stoopid thing and bought two new, small Koi for my London garden fish pond. Feel awful as I should have thought this through. Wondering about the best thing to do now? They are still OK at the moment. Should I try to catch them (not much chance?) and put them in a tank over the winter, or should I buy a pond heater?

Pond is about 5ftx5ft large and more than 3ft deep with rocks, weed etc and I look after it carefully, with a good quality filtre and pump. (I took thse out when weather temperature went down) It has about 15 medium gold fish who are all thriving.

    Any advice would be great.

  • Koi carp advice please?

I have a large fish pond in my London garden, which has a thriving collection of mostly goldfish and one or two medium koi carp. The pond was here when I bought the house and I try to look after it well. Last week for the first time I bought two new fish - very small silver koi. I floated the bag they were in on the pond for two hours before releasing them into the pond. I haven't seen them for three days - they could be hiding under the weeds, but my worry is that they have perished.

Any advice would be of great help. Thank you!

  • Advice on sofa beds!?

I'm looking for a two seater sofa bed....or 2-5? Would like a bigger one but it is for a small sitting room that is also used as a bedroom for my son (aged 21) when he visits. At the moment he sleeps on a double "blow up" mattress, and I would like him to feel more comfortable. I know that you get what you pay for, and because I'd like it to be very comfortable for him (and his girlfriends in the future!) I don't mind paying £500 - £1,000, or even more if it's THE sofa bed.

The fabric is less important, but I wondered about leather - (as my cat is less likely to claw it!)

I'd be grateful for any thoughts on what kind of mattress (eg, sprung, coil sprung...) or if you can recommend one that you have?

    Thank you!

  • Strange noise....any ideas about what it might be?

For the last two months, I keep hearing a strange noise...during the night as well as the day. It is not a loud noise, and there are times when it's hard to distinguish it from ordinary day to day sounds. It is low pitched, a bit like the sort of vibration you hear when a car goes by, but sometimes lasting for over two hours. You can hear it in the street as well as indoors.

Any ideas about what it might be?
