  • trigonometry question?

I'm a woodworker and need help simplifying a trig equation.

For my project, I need to find angle A where angle B is known. I will be making a lot of parts so would like to get my equation in most simple terms.

    I have got this far:

    tan A = sin B

    So I guess

    A = tan^-1 (sin B)

    For instance if I know angle B = 10°, I can find angle A = 9.85° (right?)

Is there a way to reduce the above equation (A = tan^-1 [sin B])

further? So there is just one trig function?

I will be sharing this with other woodworkers, and most woodworkers are not mathematicians.

    Much appreciate any help.

  • In mathematics, what does v with a dot over it mean?

I'm working with an equation with a term I am not sure of.

It is regarding velocity, it shows v with a dot directly over the v. Does this mean derivative? Average?

    Thanks much.

  • Windows 7 question...?

I have about figured out my new Windows 7. But here is a strange thing I don't understand:

Often when I click on a highlighted link it doesn't open, and a small icon appears near the link. It is yellow with a red exclamation mark in the center. I can go to the site if I right click and choose "open". What does this mean, is there a problem?

    Appreciate your help.

  • Calculate energy from constant pressure expansion.?

Although my question may appear to be homework, I assure you it is not. I am 45 years out of college and decided it was time to really understand thermodynamics and entropy.

I'm reading Engines, Energy and Entropy by Professor John Fenn. He presents the following problem (p. 71):

"Steam at a constant absolute pressure of 20 atm is admitted to the cylinder of an engine. The piston is 20 cm diameter x 60 cm long. How much work (Joules)is performed in one complete stroke of the cylinder?".

His answer is 636.5J. I get something much more. This is driving me nuts, since it is not that difficult to calculate

    W = (P)(delta V).

    Will appreciate your help!

I am designing a parabolic solar reflecting panel. I know two points and the focus, how can I determine the equation?

For example, with the focus at (0, 0) one point is at (10, -6) and the other at (20, 6).

Really appreciate your help. I studied this subject in about 1963,

  • What is the difference between the Internert and the WWW?

I'm not computer illiterate (I got here, didn't I?), but have never really understood the difference between the Internet and the WWW.

And is anyone in charge of managing these institutions, or are they self-perpetuating?

    Thanks.

  • When is it proper to ask someone to say grace at a group dinner?

First, you should know that my wife and I are not religious.

We recently had our daughter's mother in law, and our daughter and her husband, at our home for dinner. The mother in law is religious, and had recently lost her husband. In that situation, I asked her to say grace before dinner, ever though it is not our custom. My wife was offended, and told me I was being hypocritical. I felt I was being considerate of our guest's feelings.

  • Square root function on Windows scientific calculator?

Here I am referring to the calculator that comes standard with Windows XP (All Programs/Accessories/Calculator).

I often use the scientific option (View/Scientific). However, it does not have a square root function as the standard calculator does? How do you find square root on the Scientific option - I end up going back to the standard option and keying in the number again.

    Thanks

  • Site for file posting?

    Hello all -

I'm looking for a website where I can post files and have them accessable to others via a link. This would be a website similar to Flickr, but for documents, not photos.

I found a site on Google (Google docs) for file sharing, but pdf files are not allowed. The current file I want to post is pdf.

    Thanks for your help.
