  • Air New Zealand Bassinet/seat?

So my husband and I will be flying from Los Angelos to Auckland to Christchurch with our 1 year old and I was wondering what people's experience with the bassinet seats were.

People flying on different airlines have said that the armrests don't move and it was hard to see the television screen, but I know what's true with one company isn't always true for another.

I also was wondering, is there more foot room there?

  • NZ working dog owners...?

What do you feed your working dogs (or dogs with high energy requirements)?

My family will be moving to New Zealand in November with our Lab. We currently feed a local brand (SunPro) and would rather not import dog food every couple months! So I would like to switch her and see how she does before she goes into quarantine.

I'm not sure what brands are readily available over there, other than IAMS, Eucanuba, Purina, and Pedigree. (she got by on Purina but didn't thrive)

Do you have Solid Gold or Diamond?

  • How long does it take to get between the North and South Islands?

My husband and I are moving to New Zealand shortly and are curious about that. You and your car are ferried across right?

How long from Hamilton to Auckland? How long from Hamilton to Christchurch?

  • Tell me about Dunedin, please?

My husband, daughter, and I plan to move to NZ. Reading YA I stumbled upon a glowing report on Dunedin. :)

My husband is an electrician and has been filling out an Expression of Interest to move to NZ as a Skilled Migrant. I hear tell that Dunedin is growing, so that's promising.

We love the outdoors so suggestions on places to visit with our baby daughter and our 2 dogs (Labs) would be great.

I know Dunedin's a university town...do you ever have problems with unruly students?

Seeing as we have a growing family and dogs are there any areas of town (or outside town) you suggest living?

Rumour is that the weather there isn't that great. Compared to where I live in Wyoming USA it's probably wonderful though....how often do you get snow and how long does it usually stay? What about rain? (we've had several feet of snow since September...it's finally melting. But now we've had rain almost non-stop for the past 3 weeks. LOL)

  • Does anyone else have a medical-sensitive pet? Aren't they wonderful?

I have a couple dogs that are.

Whenever someone doesn't feel well, they always think they have to be right next to them touching them in some way.

One of them seems to sense when my father-in-law is going to have an episode with his heart or diabetes. She won't let him out of her site.

And I swear up and down that my rottweiler/lab mix knew I was pregnant 7 weeks before I could get a positive pregnancy test because he was very interested in putting his head on my lap or licking my belly through my shirt when usually he prefers to snooze at the top of the stairs.

Well...now I'm 40 weeks and 1 day pregnant and I have a pack of Static-Clings under foot and under chair and putting their heads on my lap. Maybe they know the baby is coming.....:)

  • Do any of you use Cloth diapers?

We plan to because of several factors.

I've already decided that I want to use prefolds.

I have a question though. I read somewhere that getting newborn size cloth diapers is a personal choice because babies grow so darn fast and a bigger size can be folded to fit. It also pointed out that newborn diapers might be worth it because you can always use them as a soaker pad with older babies.

So what have you that have cloth diapered done? Have you invested in newborn diapers or foregone them for a larger size? If you chose the larger size, what size did you get?

On the subject of cloth diapers...what are some good diaper pail brands that are reasonably child/pet proof?

    Thanks. :)

  • Words and phrases that should be BANNED from maternity care?

    "Allowed"

    "Have to"

    "Can't"

It is the woman's choice, and hers alone. Health professionals may give her advice, but it is up to her whether she accepts their recommendations. Anyone who tells a woman that she is not "allowed" to have a birth the way she wants it, "Has to" give birth the doctor's way, or "Can't" do something she wants for her baby's birth misunderstands his own authority.

Anyone else have any words or phrases (or stories) to add? :)

  • Corruptness at our local Animal Humane Society?

    What can I do?

I have come to this conclusion over the past month. See I found these two Springer Spaniels. I tried to find their owners, Reported them to the Sherrif's office, Humane Society, got on the local radio station, ect. No one has called.

The local Humane society doesn't have a shelter so I have let the two Springers stay with me and my Labs.

Anyway, 3 days after I found them (they were found on a Friday afternoon and the radio and such are closed over the weekend) the HS called and wanted to get them spayed/neutered for adoption. I expressed that they hadn't given enough time for the owners to find them. They said they would come by and take pictures of them and put up posters all over the Valley (small towns) in hopes that someone would recognize them. So 2 weeks after finding the dogs, they sent someone by.

    to be continued...

  • Legal question about Dog I found?

Well, a week ago I found two English Springer Spaniels along the highway a little ways from the ranch where I live. A male and a female. Both intact. The female had a collar and chewed through rope attached but no tags and the male had nothing. Both are very skinny (you can see their ribs) but otherwise healthy.

I've reported them to the Local Humane Association, Sherrif's office, and advertized finding them on the radio every day. Our Humane Association does not have a shelter and operates solely on volunteers. The two dogs have been living with me since I found them.

I just got a call from one of the volunteers saying that now that it has been more than 5 days, they can be spayed and neutered and put up for adoption.

I would like to keep the female (they are better behaved when they are separated anyway).

    My question is this:

Can I refuse to turn her over to the Humane Association and only turn over the male?

  • What are some good Commercial Dog Foods with higher carbohydrates?

One of my dogs is Hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and I think he would benefit from a dog food with more carbohydrates. I haven't actually seen carbohydrate content listed on the labels so what ingredients should I look for that will provide that extra carbo-boost?

Or better yet, what commercial dog food do you recommend?

Our vet recommends Alpo which all my dogs are currently on (and I mix it with elk meat) and he suggested just boosting his food rations...well, my dog only eats 3 cups in one sitting before he gets full and leaves his food to the other dogs.

On a side note.....I live two hours from the nearest city, so keep that in mind when suggesting dog foods as our grocery store only carries the common brands you hear about on TV on a regular basis. :)

  • What kind of fish is this?

This fish came with our tank. We've had the tank since April. The previous owners had the tank for 4 years, I'm not sure how long this fish has been in it.

    http://community.webshots.com/album/560980327inoWK...

He/she holds her own against the fin-nipping tiger barbs we have and doesn't have any fin damage, so I'm assuming it's a semi-aggressive to agressive fish. I don't know if that helps in species ID, but I thought I'd include that just in case it does.

It doesn't have an upturned mouth, so it's not a betta (if it was, that's a wierd coloured betta).

A killifish of some sort maybe?

  • Extremely food aggressive kittens...there's more, it gets weird!?

These kittens are wonderful otherwise and are even trustworthy with small children, but are very VERY food aggressive.

They're fine with each other but I get bitten each time I put the bowl down. I have to feed them outside because they are the messiest eaters I have ever seen. The bowl is tip-proof, yet the food always ends up spread all over the porch and down the driveway.

They also get into the garbage, the cabinets, the sink, my pots and pans, and anything else that might hold food. Yesterday, one of them burned her feet while stealing a pancake out of a pan. It was like she didn't even care, she just kept meowing and continuing after the food.

I get bit whenever I pull them out of the garbage, sink, ect and am not thrilled because first of all, It hurts! And more worrisome, they eat mice and I'm pregnant.

  • What is an easy care foreground plant to carpet my aquarium?

I don't want a plant that gets very tall and I want one that doesn't require much maintenance.

  • Crayfish question...?

I've got a minnow tank. They're not the white clouds, they're the caught-from-the-pond-we-had-to-drain kind.

My husband thinks it would be cool to have a crayfish in the tank. I've read on Answers that they can catch small fish like minnows with their claws, but I was wondering....

The species we have in our creeks has one large claw and one little one. If we put a small rubber band on the large claw (like they do with lobsters destined to be food) would that prevent it from catching minnows?

Also...would a crayfish bother a large apple snail?

  • Cycling a tank (No Joe Blow answerers please)?

I've got an existing 25 gallon tank. I want to start an additional tank.

My question is this: After doing a partial water change in the existing tank, could I put some of the water from it into the new one to move the cycling process along?

  • Is there any kind of larger fish (4-6'') that can be happily kept in a 25 gallon aquarium?

.....that isn't inclined to eat smaller fish

  • Cichlid Question?

Ok, so a couple weeks ago my husband got a 20 gallon tank from someone he was working with and they gave him four fish to go with it: A silver dollar, two jellybean cichlids, and a little irredesent long-tailed minnow shaped one.

I knew the cichlids would grow big and we don't have room for a bigger tank so I know I'll have to find them a new home.

How fast do they grow? Right now one is just under 3.5 inches and the other is 4.5 inches.

  • Can fish get bruises?

Because my jellybean cichlid keeps trying to squeeze through a hole in the centerpiece of my tank. And some bruise-looking patches on his belly have showed up since I noticed him doing it.

He fits through the other hole, but this hole is the only one he seems interested in.
