  • Can you use an AC non-contact voltage tester to test DC wires?

I swear I had an instructor at tech school showing off a non-contact voltage tester and talking about how helpful it was tracing large wiring harnesses on cars and looking for breaks in the wires.

I can't find a DC tester in stores anywhere, and searching for it on the internet just turns up a bunch of results for AC testers.

Does anybody know if a DC tester actually exists, and if so, where can I get one?

Couple of side notes-- tech school was six years ago. I don't remember the instructor's name so I can't exactly look him up and ask what tool he was showing off. Also, the following link is an example of what tool I'm talking about, only I need/want a version that works on 6-24 volt DC. http://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-voltage-t...

  • 84 Yamaha Virago stutter/hesitation/backfire?

My 84 Virago 1000cc just started acting up. Under heavy acceleration (like drag race off a red light) it has a stutter throughout the acceleration. Under light/normal acceleration I don't notice any problems. While cruising along at a steady speed (60mph or less, haven't tried the interstate), regardless of speed, it'll randomly hesitate, sometimes stutter and bog down, and once or twice it's backfired.

Any ideas as to where I should start in fixing this problem?

  • Any way to recover data after a system wipe?

I want to sell my computer so I saved all my files onto some USB keys and did a factory reset. Only after the reset did I realize that I hadn't copied my "My Documents" folder, I had just created a short cut to the folder.... Oops. Is there any possible way to recover the stuff that I just wiped from my hard drive, or did I actually permanently delete it?

  • What is a "suitable stand" for a motorcycle engine?

I'm rebuilding the engine in my 84 yamaha venture. Its a 1200cc engine so its not exactly light. I have the original technicians manual and have been following its directions step by step on how to dismantle the engine, but now it tells me to place a "suitable stand under the engine before proceeding". What can I use? I have a 3-ton floor jack, but the saddle isn't anywhere big enough to balance the engine on.

  • Where can I learn to design and build engines?

I've done some looking online, but I can't find anything that is actually helpful. 99% of the results I get are for schools like UTI which teach you to fix cars, and I've already attended UTI. Now I want to learn how to build cars and engines from the ground up, not by ordering parts and assembling them, but by actually making all the parts myself.

If anybody knows of any schools that have programs like this, I'd really appreciate knowing about them. Thanks

  • 84 Yamaha Venture shifting problem?

I have an 84 Yamaha Venture 1200cc that refuses to up-shift. Every time I try it bends and eventually snaps the shift linkage. I don't really want to take this to a shop since the cost of the repair would most likely be more than the bike is worth in its current state, so I was hoping somebody out there might have some thoughts on what would cause this and how I can fix it.

  • Strange noise coming from the wheels of my S10?

I have a 2003 Chevy S10. When I put the truck in drive, some strange noise comes from the front right tire. The only way I can describe this noise is it sounds like when a kid puts a card in his bicycle spokes and rides around. The noise only happens when I have the car in drive and am moving forward. Put it in reverse, everything sounds normal.

I have removed all 4 tires, checked all the brakes; nothing is sticking, nothing is grinding. There's nothing hanging down or rubbing on the tire. I've put the truck on jack stands and put it in drive and it still makes the noise, but I can't see anything that would cause it to make such a noise.

The ABS light was off until I put the truck on jack stands and drove it, then the light came on and stayed on. Don't know if that's directly related to the problem or if its another problem that I need to fix.

Any thoughts or ideas as to what this might be would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to remove the nut from my alternator pulley?

Is it as simple as put the socket on and turn or do I need to do something more, like hold the pulley still somehow? Or, is there some specialty socket that I need to get for this, because the center of the shaft has what appears to be a hole for an allen key.

  • Diagnostic tips for misfire on Mercury Mountaineer?

I have a 99 Mercury Mountaineer with a 5.0L engine. I just replaced the thermostat yesterday and immediately after finishing that repair the engine began misfiring. Using a code reader I can pull codes for random misfire and cylinder 4 misfire.

I put new spark plugs and wires in about 2 months ago which fixed a cylinder 7 misfire that it was having at the time. I'm kinda guessing that it's not going to be the plugs and wires this time, but I'm at a loss as to what I should check and how I should check it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • What's the best way to unstick a very stuck bolt?

I'm trying to remove the distributor from my 95 chevy 1500 with a 5.7. Only problem is the one bolt holding the clamp on. I've tried soaking this bolt in WD-40 and Deep Creep. I've heated it up with a propane torch. I've taken a hammer with a punch and hit the head to try and jar it loose. And at the end of this all, I've managed to snap the drive off my ratchet (thank God its craftsman) and twist my distributor wrench in half. This bolt will not budge. What else can I do?

  • where can I get oil/air filters for my motorcycle?

I know the obvious answer of the dealership, but there's gotta be someplace cheaper than that. Is there an autozone of the motorcycle world somewhere?

  • Why can only 1 device use the internet at a time on my home network?

I have a Dynex DX-ESW5 10/100M Fast Ethernet Switch (5 available ports) I put the cable from the modem Comcast provided into the uplink port, and then ran a cable from one port to the PC in my room, and a cable from another port to the PC in another room. The internet is wonderfully fast, but only one computer can be on the internet at a time. Why is this?

  • Why does my engine have an extremely high idle?

I have an 84 yamaha venture with a 1200cc engine. When I first start it, the engine idles around 1000rpm. As the engine warms up, the idle increases. After about 5 minutes of idling it was at 1500 rpm, at which point I went for a ride. By the end of my driveway (about 10 seconds of riding) it idled at 2000 rpm, and the more I rode the higher the idle became. The engine seems to run fine while its driving, but as soon as I pull the clutch in the rpm goes through the roof.

Before somebody chastises me for riding it like this, I'm trying to work some SeaFoam through the system. I thought that might help it out some. I don't think its a stuck or sticking throttle since the idle speed increased on its own without me ever touching the throttle when I first started the bike.

So... Anybody have any suggestions as to what it might be or how I might fix it?

  • Question about Side-Angle-Side rule of triangular similarity?

A friend and I got in a bit of an argument about the rules used to decide if two triangles are similar. You'll have to check out the picture to follow along...

I said that ∆AYX and ∆ABC were similar since the two share sides AX and AC, angles CAB and XAY, and sides AY and AB. From this I said that angles AXY and AYX would be equal to angles ACB and ABC, respectively.

My friend claims that I'm full of crap and that you can't say the two triangles are similar based on the reasoning I used.

Which one of us is right?
