  • Looking to lower my travel costs?

My daughter and I are planning an around-the-country trip this summer. I'm trying to cut costs where I can without compromising the quality of the trip. The two main areas I'm looking at is a rental vehicle and places to sleep. Does anyone know of some obscure websites that perhaps offers vehicles for rent at less that rental agency prices? I've already browsed the usual places (rental company websites, Travelocity, Expedia, etc.) and although I have a reservation, am looking for something cheaper. As far as a room goes, I've checked things like the camping cabins at KOA and found chain motels cheaper. Any alternative I may have overlooked?

  • Need to know something about "Miracle on 34th Street" (original movie)?

I'm curious about the mailroom scene (being a postal worker). As this was before the days of any automation when everything was hand-sorted, it will probably take someone who's pretty old or whose father or grandfather worked in this area. When the clerks are sorting the mail, they're putting it in 3 locations. The overhead behind location is the one I want to know about, mainly how it worked. Were the letters sucked up by some sort of vacuum? Youy never see one hit the floor.

  • Now that the new racing season is here, try these trivia questions about NASCAR's early days.?

    1. What was Fireball Roberts real name?

    2. How did he get the nickname Fireball?

    3. Fireball always said he only feared 2 things. What were they?

    4. Who were the other 2 drivers involved in the wreck that ultimately took Fireball's life?

    5. What race and when?

    6. (Non-Fireball question). Who ran "The Best Damn Garage in Town"?

    7. What was the name of the hotel in Daytona Beach where the initial NASCAR organizational meeting was held?

    8. What was the length of the beach road course at Daytona?

    9. What highway made up half of the course?

    10. Where was the very first NASCAR-sanctioned race held, what year, and who won?

    Good luck and enjoy.

First prize- Undying admiration of tens of tens.

  • Should NASCAR change the qualifying format at Daytona?

Personally, do away with pole qualifying, divide the field of entries in half, and let the top 22 finishers in each race in the 500. And do away with the top 35 from last season junk. After the 500, then use top 35.

  • Who will be the first?

OK, since it's down to basically a 2-man shoot-out between JG and JJ, who will be the first to hiccup and have a bad finish? And how bad will it be? Or will they both continue on as they have all season and whoever finishes ahead of the other at Homestead wins it all? OK, here's my prediction. JG closes it back up at Phoenix and they are only 5 points apart in the finale. In a green-white-checkered, JG slips past the 48 on the final turn, not to win, but to finish ahead of JJ enough to take the Cup by a mere 3 points. How's that sound?

  • Mothball fleet location?

As an old salt, I am interested in the mothball fleet. Navy websites list the location of many mothballed ships as the James River, but exactly where on the James are they located? Is there a visual access point or is it close to a road where you can see some of the ships? Any info would be appreciated.

  • Since so many are hung up on NASCAR renecks, would someone please tell what a redneck is?

So many people seem to be infatuated (sp) with the term "redneck", let's see how many know exactly what one is. Chews tobacco? Nope; many, many baseball and football players do (or at least use to). Drives a pick-up? Better take a look at all of you who drive an SUV (nothing but a pick-up with the bed covered) Drinks beer? Next comment.

Lives in the south? Try again. So come on, all you intellect types; give us a good definition.

  • One-way car rentals?

I will be taking a trip next year where I will fly cross-country and drive back. Some car rental places do one-way rentals, but charge an arm and a leg. Do any companies have programs where I can complete someone else's round-trip rental?
