  • Is a commission advance taxable income in the year received?

I received a real estate commission advance in 2009 which was repaid last week, 2/1/2010. Is the advance considered income or a loan in 2009?

Since the sale had not completed in 2009 and as with any real estate transaction, there's a chance that it may not, my opinion is that it was an unsecured loan.

The 1099-MISC I received shows it as income, but how can it be that before I earned it?

  • How can I display both "from" and "to" columns in email?

The only way I can know where the message was sent to is to click on the actual message because it only displays the "from" column.

Is there a way to display both "from" and "to" columns?

  • When is it time to put my 16 year old cat to "sleep"? Sighhh....?

She found me and adopted me over 8 years ago in an apt. where I used to live, so I guess her owner must have left her behind when they moved. The best I can guess is that she is a Siberian tan/black/white longhaired cat about 16 years old.

She is very affectionate and loving and always purred and licked my face when I picked her up. Last year I noticed she started to not find her food or litterbox and sometimes bumped into walls. She also became deaf about 1 year before that, where loud pops and other noises didn't register, even when I clapped my hand next to her ear.

The vet said that she is loosing her sight and we should take her to a pet eye specialist. I did, and she said that she is loosing her light receptors (rod or cones) and there's nothing can be done.

The vet also put her on blood pressure medication for 6 months before that (still is) and hyper thyroid medication as well. She used to weigh about 7lbs and over a period of 6mo. lost weight where now she's only 5.75lb (I weigh her every day on an electronic scale). Her weight is stable, she now eats well as before, but has not gained the weight back.

She is completely blind and deaf now, and when she's awake she walks around by using the perimiter of the walls, desk, chairs, etc. to guide her. Unfortunately she is now so weak that sometimes stumbles because her hind feet fail to support her.

She sleeps literally about 23hrs a day and only wakes to eat or drink. When she does wake up, I have to carry her to her food and water, then I carry her to the litterbox. She made her home under our bed for over 1 year. After she became stable, she now started to sleep in my office desk leg area for over 6 mo. now (can't stretch my legs anymore :).

She had urinary track infection on and off for a few years. Last instance was about 3 months ago. and she got antibiotics which got rid of it. She also started to pee on the carpet about 6-8 months ago. So I started pick her up and take her to the litterbox and place her in it 3-6 times a day to pee and that seems to work. Unfortunately when we're not home, she goes on the carpet anyway. She knows where the litterbox is, but the doc said that she cannot control her bladder any longer, so she goes whenever the urge hits her, just like elderly humans. So I bought pet diapers which I put it on her when we leave the house which worked.

Her pee is like water, doesn't smell like it used to and only about two tablespoon full. The vet it's said that her organs are starting to fail because of her age and there's nothing he can do or recommend.

We have spent over $6,000 in the last 2-3 years and willing to spend any amount more if it could help, but the vet said no amount of treatment can extend anyone's life including hers.

We don't believe she's suffering any pain and obviously nobody can predict how long she has left, but my question is should we prolong the inevitable or end it for her. Our decision is to let nature take its course, but is this unfair to her?
