  • What is/was controversial about Campbell Newman in QLD?

    Hi Everyone,

    I've just been hearing a lot on the news lately about politics. Whilst I'm pretty sure we're all getting a bit tired of the same nonsense, there's this continuous phrasing in the media or people keep saying that we don't want the country to be run like QLD. And people are referencing Campell Newman.

    So I'm just wondering, because I don't know myself, what is Campell Newman doing wrong, or right in QLD? And more importantly, what effect will this have, if any on the future of Australia and politics?

    If you have experimental data for three concentrations; [A], [B] and [C]. How do you find the order with respect to [A], [B] and [C]. BUT I can't find experimental data where the [C] changes and both [A] and [B] stay the same. So if that is the case, how could you find the order for [C]?

    Given the following potentials

    Half-reaction

    Cu2+ + e ---> Cu+ Eo=0.16

    Cu+ + e ---> Cu Eo=0.52

    a) calculate the Ecell of this reaction

    I did: 0.52 - (-0.16) = 0.68....is that right?

    b)Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant for the disproportionation for Cu+

    I have nooooooooo clue how to do this!!

    c) If a piece of copper metal is added to a 1.0M solution of Cu2+ (aq), calcuate the equilibrium concentration of Cu+.

    I'm guessing you may need to use the Nernst equation, but don't know how to apply it here.

  • Calculating Ecell of galvanic cells?

    Hi guys,

    I'm just looking at an example, and I think they have calculated the Ecell wrong. Can you check my working out please?

    Anode: -{Fe3+ + e --> Fe2+ E° = +0.77 V}

    Cathode: Cl2 + 2e--> 2Cl E° = +1.36 V

    Cell potential = -{E°(anode)} + E°(cathode) = -{+0.77} + 1.36 = 0.59

    The above working out is from the example

    BUT this is how I work out;

    Ecell = higher cell -- ( reverse of the lower cell)

    and using the above values, this should be

    = +1.36 - (-0.77) = 2.13

    So which working out is correct?

  • Difference between addition reaction or reduction?

    Say if you had cyclohexene, and the double bond was broken down...how do you know if this was an addition reaction or a reduction?

    Also, what if it was benzene, and the double bonds were broken down? And what if it were a substituted benzene with an alkene group attached, and those bonds in that group were broken down. Sorry if this sounds like rambling guys, but would appreciate some help...i am totally lost!

    I don't know how to work this out, I think the X-bar mean = 5...because I think (for some reason) that the mean = X-bar mean

    But I don't know how to word out the standard deviation of X-bar.

    Hi guys, I'm confused about this genetic problem and the phenotypes.

    So two purebreeding parents are crossed. The mother has the phenotypes black hair and eyeless and the father is wildtype. The offspring of the parents are all wild type. The ratio of the F2 is 9 wild type, 3 black hair, 3 eyeless and 1 eyeless and black hair.

    What is the outline of the crosses from the parents, F1, and the offspring of the f1.

    Can you check if i've done this correctly please.

    Parents: bb ; ey ey x b+b+ ; ey+ ey+ --> b+b ; ey+ ey

    Have i written the wild type father genotype correctly?

    F1: will all be b+b ; ey+ ey --> so the phenotype of this offspring will be wildtype??? wildtype is dominant because it is the expressed phenotype of a heterozygote? is that right?

    offspring of the F1 will be; b ey, b+ ey, ey+ b+, b+ ey+

    offspring of the F1 will be the punnet square of b+b ; ey+ ey --> which I do the dyhybrid square on?

    I can do the dihybrid cross myself if i get the offspring right, but i'm not sure if i've gotten the right symbols and stuff.

  • Finding the probability when I have standard deviation and mean?

    The heights of Austrian men aged 20 to 24 are approximately normally distributed with mean 175 cm and standard deviation 5cm. The probabilty that a randomly selected 20 to 24 year old Australian male is exactly 180cm tall is.

    Is this asking me, what is the exact probability of x when it is one standard deviation above the mean? Also is this normal distribution? I'm not really sure how to tackle it

    and one more

    The average time taken to complete an exam, X, follows a normal distribution with mean= 50 minutes and standard deviation = 25 minutes.By what time should 67% of the students have finished the exam?

    Okay, how do you know whether this info tells you that this is normal distribution or not, do you just assume it is?

    Please help me guys..and if anyone has any good maths and stats websites -- even links on youtube that can show me how to solve these problems I would really appreciate it!

    Limestone is dissolved by adding 65mL of 1.035 M HCl and the solution is transferred to a 250mL volumetric flask and diluted using distilled water. Aliquots of 10mL of this solution are then titrated against a standard solution of 0.0999M NaOH and the average titre is 19.85 mL.

    Calculate the molarity of the CaCO3 in the 250 mL flask.

    What I did:

    mol of NaOH = (19.85/1000) x 0.0999 = 0.00198 mol

    mol of HCl added initially = 0.065 x 1.035 = 0.0673 mol

    mol HCl that did not react with NaOH = 0.0673 -- 0.00198 = 0.0653 mols

    Now, I'm not sure where to go....

  • Concentration question with aliquot and dilution?

    A 250 mL standard solution of HCl needs to be prepared for a titration.

    Calculate the required volume of 15.0 M HCl required to make the standard solution so that 10.0 mL aliquots from the standard solution contain 0.0183 moles of HCl.

    I'm having trouble with the "10.0ml of aliquots" were taken. I'm not sure what that means calculation wise...
