I'm a high school freshman interested in a wide variety of topics, particularly astrobiology. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions -- I get a tad bored writing about myself here. Incidentally, 'Wilson' is the name of my turtle, named after the evolutionary theorist, sociobiologist, and etymologist E. O. Wilson. Please do not think in any way that he was named after David Sloan Wilson, with whom I disagree with on many a level. My real name is Alex.

  • To what extent does political bias affect the quality of education?

I'm interested to hear about your reactions to this question, which has been partly influenced by the recent Yahoo! article "Texas ed board vote reflects far-right influences": http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_texas_schools_social...

Do you think that the introduction of political biases into textbooks, whether left or right, affects the quality of one's education? If so, to what extent?

Thank you very much for your time!

  • What were the specs of Galileo's telescope?

I was looking online and couldn't find a direct answer. I've always wondered what the specs of his telescope were... wouldn't it be nice to see exactly what Galileo saw?

  • Could those who believe atheists are devoid of moral values please comment on these statistics?

I'm targeting people who think that atheists have LITTLE to NO moral values - on average. I was reading some comments through the religion and spirituality section, and online - it appears that many (not all) of those with religious affiliation think that an atheist's lack of faith in God(s) causes lack of moral values.

Right off the bat, and before reading the rest of the question, please answer this:

*Why do you think that the lack of faith in God(s) makes people bad? I am an atheist, but I wouldn't consider myself lacking in moral values.

    *******************

Ok, now please continue reading. PLEASE DO NOT EDIT YOUR ORIGINAL ANSWER.

If you think that all atheists are deprived of moral values, please look at these figures released by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1997. The following shows the religious make-up of prisoners throughout the United States:

    # Catholic 39.164%

    # Protestant 35.008%

    # Muslim 7.273%

    # American Indian 3.222%

    # Nation 2.320%

    # Rasta 1.987%

    # Jewish 1.773%

    # Church of Christ 1.744%

    # Pentecostal 1.463%

    # Moorish 1.426%

    # Buddhist 1.180%

    # Jehovah Witness 0.890%

    # Adventist 0.831%

    # Orthodox 0.502%

    And the atheists in prison:

    0.21% of inmates were atheist.

***Denise Golumbaski, Research Analyst, Federal Bureau of Prisons, compiled from up-to-the-day figures on March 5th, 1997***

So if you are convinced atheists are the source of evil throughout this country, how do you respond to those figures?

Thank you all for your answers.

P.S.: I will not be giving thumbs-down, only thumbs-up though I can't guarantee your answer will receive a thumbs-up from me. So please do not feel afraid to answer, or express your opinions. I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

  • People who voted "Yes" on prop-8: what did you accomplish? ?

You got some words added to the constitution preventing same-sex couples from getting married. You failed, however, to accomplish the following:

*stopping gay people from going to church, and being blessed under God.

*stopping gay people from living together.

    *stopping domestic partnership.

And despite what the Bible wants, same-sex couples are still alive:

"And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." - Lev 20:13

So what did you really accomplish?

Gay people are alive and thriving, they can go to church and worship your God (who apparently doesn't like them that much), and gay people can still live together, and do whatever they want to - except get married.

And what about gay marriage being taught in schools? Well first of all, it most likely wouldn't be in California, according to a study done by KCRA-TV (you might be able to find it on their website: http:www.kcra.com). Would it be so bad to introduce them to an alternative style of living?

So let's hear it - why will you sleep better at night, knowing that now thousands of same-sex couples can no longer get married? I want to know.

Someone showed this to me on YouTube.... I have to say, it's one of the few rap songs that doesn't suck.

So.... my question is, did they leave out any important parts?

  • What supports the theory of Hawking Radiation?

Is there any sort of observational evidence supporting it? How well accepted is it among the scientific community? Just curious. Thanks for your help.

PS: I'd appreciate it if you didn't copy and paste it from wikipedia ;-)

  • Why do some Christians believe that the Big Bang theory disproves the existence of God?

I'm aware that not all Christians feel this way, and that many feel that God was what started the Big Bang.

I have noticed, however, that people get this strange assumption that the Big Bang disproves the existence of God when I really don't see it doing that.

In 1951, Pope Pius XII accepted the Big Bang theory, on behalf of the Catholic Church, to be in accordance to the Bible.

Also, Georges Lemaître, a Catholic Priest, made some major advances in the Big Bang theory.

Those are only a few examples----I'm still not sure why some Christians feel it disproves God. If you feel it does, could you please tell me why?

Thank you all for taking your time to answer this question.

  • Did I miss something?

All of a sudden I'm dealing with 2,000 mile alien space ship questions! What has been going on? I'm used to the normal 2012 stuff... someone forgot to tell me about the newest hogwash. Is this the whole October 14 alien visit thing? Sorry, it's hard to keep up with all these insane ideas.

  • What really is the universal gravitational constant?

    I've heard:

    * 6.67300 x 10^-11 (Google calculator)

    * 6.6726 x 10^-11 (My old physics textbook)

    * 6.67428 x 10^-11 (Wikipedia)

    * 6.670 x 10^-11 (Another user on yahoo answers)

So which one is it? I know that we don't know the exact figure, but which one is most accepted?

  • Does the UC system favor AP over IB?

I'm going into high school next year, and I would like to go to UC Davis for college. I heard that the UC system favors AP over IB. I have the choice of going to a public high school with a VERY well respected IB program, or go to a private Christian high school that offers AP. Is it true that the UC system prefers AP? I'd much rather go to the IB school because it has a much more intense program.

  • If the Mayans told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?

With the flood of 2012 questions we always get I've found that people take the Mayans very seriously, and seem to believe in anything they say (even though they never predicted the end of the world in 2012). So to all those Mayan Maniacs out there: If the Mayans told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?

  • Atheists: Do you celebrate Christmas just for tradition?

I'm an atheist, but I still buy presents for people, have the Christmas tree, and send out Christmas cards. My question is, do you still celebrate it just for tradition's sake?

  • Could a creationist please explain the Big Bang theory?

I think that a lot of people that deny the Big Bang theory don't understand it. I want to hear some creationists explain to me what the Big Bang is... it would be nice if people could at least understand something before they deny it.

And just so you know, I am a former Christian- I read the Bible... I'm aware of how the Bible says the universe was created, and I'm also aware of how Christians are capable of believing in both the Big Bang, and God. I understand both sides... all I'm asking is for you to do the same.

Please do not look it up- I want you to explain it in your own words.

NOTE: In case you're wondering, I NEVER give a thumbs down to someone who answers my question... that would really defeat the purpose of asking it, wouldn't it?

  • Would the astronomy enthusiasts care to comment on light pollution?

I'm doing a project for science class, and I've chosen to write about a type of pollution people often forget about- light pollution.

I'm not asking anyone to do my homework, I was just wondering if some of the astronomy enthusiasts out there could answer a couple questions about light pollution that I could put in my report.

    1. Do you feel light pollution is an important issue?

    2. What measures do you take to resolve this problem?

    3. How has light pollution affected your observation of the night sky?

I would also appreciate it if you could include your first name (I honestly don't care if you make it up- but at least be creative) as well as how long you have been observing the night sky.

Thanks in advance everyone! I really appreciate this.

  • Would the people who have been badgering us about the LHC please answer this?

I actually have a couple questions:

    1. Where did you get your information?

    2. What makes you think that a team of astrophysicists, particle physicists, and engineers will organize a world doomsday?

    3. Have you ever taken a physics class?

Thanks for the answers... if you do answer. I think I have a pretty good idea on what you're going to say... but thanks for taking the time! And just so you know, the world won't end via LHC. Activation set for under 3 hours!!!

  • What pseudo-scientific ingrate is trying to shut down the LHC?

There was some moron who is supposedly a chemist advocating for doomsday via LHC. What's his name? Where did he get his degree? Was it from a cereal box?
