  • If the government eliminates ethanol subsidies. Will ethanol haters like ethanol then?

people say ethanol should be able to stand on it's on after years of subsidies. If it does stand on it's own, will the biofuel haters like it then? Please dont say it drives up the price of food, when many reputable world organizations have said its only been responsible for may lbe a 2 to 5 percent increase in food costs, the rest is due to increased costs of oil, packaging and labor. 95% of corn going to ethanol comes out as a by- product that is fed to livestock. This false smear campaign had been perpetrated by the grocery manufactures and oil industry of course the oil industry doesn't want anything else to compete with oil. What business would?

  • If people think ethanol is driving up the price if food, why are vegetables prices also up 30-40 percent?

Ethanol is blamed for everything from destroying the environment( I just don't get that one, because the same corn used for ethanol we also eat) to increasing food prices and causing America to become obese. Everytime a new energy is created, There is always a group of activistd to shoot it down. ethanol and biodiesel are made in America, by Americans, for Americans. Why are some people against something that provides 400,000 jobs and keeps all that money here in the US and doesn't go to terrorist countries and oil rich kings?

  • If Obamacare passes, should a fat tax be imposed on obese people and a tax credit for people who are not obese?

People who smoke pay more for health insurance, because they have more health problems. Overweight people have all sorts of problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, heart attacks, knees, feet and joint problems. So, why should those of us who take care of their bodies subsidize those who do not?

  • should overweight people have to pay a larger carbon tax for having a larger carbon foot print?

corporations and private busineses will have to pay more in a cap and trade program because they have a larger carbon foot print so why shouldn't people who consume more food pay for their larger carbon foot print.

  • why do people still believe ethanol is driving up the price of food.?

the price of corn has fallen 50% in the past 6 months, but food prices are basially at the same level. the truth and the facts are that the oil companies, the Grocers Manufacturers Association and environmentalists have paid millions of dollars to a lobbying group in washington to put bad publicity out about ethanol, biodiesel and most alternative fuels because the oil companies do not want the competition. the oil companies courted the GMA and environmentalists to help them get there lies to the public. corn grown for food is NOT bad for the environment. if it is we need to stop growing it for food for humans and livestock. the jobs that have been created, the equipment manufacturers that have been revived and the most important thing is that all the money generated IS STAYING IN OUR COUNTRY INSTEAD OF CONTINUING TO FLOW INTO OTHER COUNTRIES. when responding to this question, please don't use the term, our land, our corn, because unless your paying the taxes or making land payments it's not your land or your corn. farming has been accused of polluting the environment ever since tree huggers were born, we never hear about how much fertilizers, pesticides and soil from constuction the non farming community is contributing to the streams and rivers. this is my answer to my question, let me hear yours. please give me an answer that will tell me why it is better to send our money out of the USA than to try to continue to make our biofuels more efficient and actually try and produce something in the USA and not import everthing. the automobile industry is a perfect example of why we have got to support products manufactured in the USA or we're all gonna end up working for china, japan, saudia arabia or some dictator.

  • if the ethanol process becomes as efficient as gasoline production will skeptics support ethanol then?

before you answer my question, please, ethanol is NOT driving the price of food up. it only makes up a small percentage of food processing. it's the cost of oil that is increasing all costs of production for all industries that in turn increase the price of food. don't forget the united states is spending billions of dollars on diet pills, exercise machines, medical procedures and many diet programs to lose weight. so if the price of food is increasing maybe in the long run our nation will be healtier.

  • how much energy does it take to produce a gallon of gasoline compared to producing a gallon of ethanol?

when corn is used for ethanol, all the value is not lost in the process, a by product is left over that can be fed to livestock. so really corn used for ethanol is not taken out of the corn supply. if people would do a little research, they would find out most negative reports about biofuels have been funded by oil companies to convince the public that they are inefficient and takes more energy to produce than is returned. this is just completely false.in the past it was true, but many advances have been made just in the last year to improve energy production in ethanol. biodiesel made from any type of vegetable oil produces one gallon of biodiesel for one gallon oil. one of the results that effects every citizen of the U.S. is, that every dollar that is spent on biofuels in this country stays in this counrty instead of going to middle dictators and then funneled to terrorists so they can blow us up.

  • why are americans against ethanol and biodiesel, but keep sending their money to the middle east?

a year ago ethanol and biodiesel were the golden children that most everybody loved. they are not the silver bullet that is going to replace fossil fuels but only a piece of the pie along with solar, wind and other alternative fuels. now, one year later the news nedia and oil company funded reports talk about how ethanol and biodiesel is not going to work because there is not enough corn and soybeans for food and fuel. we knew all this when the renewable energy programs were enacted by the government last year. now that the news media and oil companies have convinced the world that bio fuels are not the answer and has been the sole reason for food costs increases biofuels have become the whipping boy for high food prices. so now what does everyone say? these farmers are getting rich off this ethanol, oh my god thats' the last thing we want to do in the u.s. is make a product here that is not imported that somebody might actually turn a profit or god forbid create a job.

  • what percent of the farm bill now being debated is food stamps, conservation and farm subsidies?

most everyone thinks the farm bill is strictly for farmers. they do not know that food stamps makes up the majority of the farm bill. the bill that is currently moving thru congress has a 75 percent increase in food stamps and 2.5 percent reduction for actual farm payments. with prices for commodities at present rates, very little is being paid to farmers today.

  • why do U.S. citizens buy foreiegn cars and products and not realize they are cutting their own throats?

the trade deficit in the U.S. continues to grow larger and larger each year. but americans continue to purchase products from other countries and the billions and billions keep flowing out. agriculture is the only thing that has a positive trade flow for us. if it keeps going like this we will one day produce nothing but people that can't support themselves because they have no job.

  • if farmers are getting rich growing corn for ethanol why have the acres dropped from 92 million to 86 million?

the price of corn has almost doubled for corn in the last year, but acres have dropped from 92 milliom to 86 million. why is that, i know the answer, but do you.

  • if increasing our corn acres to grow fuel is bad for the environment, why is growing corn for food not bad?

all the talk of growing corn for fuel is bad for the environment and contributing to the dead zone in the gulf of mexico, why is growing more acres of corn for food not equally a bad idea ? if we were to grow more corn for food and the price of it went down, would that be a crime against humanity because we wanted cheaper food and wanted to eat more? the first thing you hear when we talk about growing corn for fuel is, increasing corn acres will increase the amount of chemicals and fertilizers in the environment, but what"s the difference in growing crops for food or fuel, the results are the same.

  • what percent of the dead zone inthe gulf of mexico is the non farming population responsible for?

farming has been accused of being the main and only culprits for the dead area in the gulf of mexico from nitrogen fertilizer runoff. nobody ever says a word about how many tons of nitrogen, potash, phosphate, pesticides and herbicides that the millions of homeowners apply to their lawns across the u.s. most homeowners in the city have no idea how much their applying per acre, some of our city friends' fertilization program consists of is " well if that amount is good then we will just double it and have twice as beautiful lawn.

  • if ethanol is responible for food costs increases, then why have vegetable prices went up also?

increased grain prices have been the whipping boy for several days on the morning talk shows. the cost of the main food staples are up 30% this year, but corn has doubled in price, why hasn't food doubled in price. according to the USDA food cost will only be up 4 to 5 percent in 08' ,the U.S. still has the safest, most abundant and cheapest food in the world.

  • if gas prices hit $10/gal. and ethanol and biodiesel stay the same, then will people like biofuels?

what if oil goes to 225/barrel as has been predicted in the next 2 years or the 65%of our oil that we import is cut off, what will we do then? all farmers and people in the biofuels industry are well aware that corn and soybeans cannot supply all our fuel needs but can only supply a small percentage. biofuels are only a small part of the solution to our energy needs. please don't kill something that is not a perfect solution. the energy in energy out from corn and soybeans is becoming better and better everyday.some ethanol plants are now locating near cattle feed lots and grain elevators. they are using the cattle manure for energy to power the ethanol plant. then the corn byproduct is then fed to the cattle.the winners for trying to do something to cut our oil use are the american citizens themselves. we can keep the money being exported out of our counrty for oil here. why can't we produce something in our country and use it instead of importing 65% OF OUR ENERGY?

12 AnswersAlternative Fuel Vehicles1 decade ago
  • what is the difference in energy used for oil production and energy used for ethanol production?

you never hear about how much energy it takes for oil discovery, refining and distribution and the continuing damage to the environment. ethanol on the other hand is accused of being inefficient, increasing food costs. it is renewable and is not destroying the environment. ethanol production is becoming more and more efficient every day. many processes were not very efficient when they were first discovered and took time to refine and make more productive. lets not abandon something that provides a part of the large puzzel of energy independance from dictator countries that hate our guts and want to kill us. we must try and find other sources of energy or we will have no choice but to continue to send billions of dollars out of our country. what if our oil imports are cut off, what will we do? i know well, the food vs. fuel debate. but the facts are that there is plenty of grain and areas to produce it for food and fuel and corn production is not destroying the environment.
