Hot nerd.

  • Problem with Microsoft Word 2006?

Probably a stupid question, since it happens to me all the time and I always forget how I fixed it in the first place, but I was writing a document and clicked something and now, instead of there being top and bottom margins, the text runs continuously through the pages. What do I to to rectify the problem? Thanks a bunch!

  • Can you give me some poetry suggestions?

I'm looking for some French or Spanish poetry. Real passionate stuff. Like decadent, self-destructive love poetry from the fin-de-siecle. Shoot.

  • Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 2, Mvt. 2, Piu Mosso

So, I've been learning the mammoth concerto to play with one of my college's orchestras this fall since last fall, and am still having trouble with the Piu Mosso section in Movement 2, you know, all that noodly stuff (from 1:35-2:03). Any fingering suggestions or tricks to help met get up to speed? The rest of the concertos in performance shape, I'm just stuck on this god-forsaken part. Thanks!

  • Composition help please!

Hello, all! I'm composing a ballet for one of my college's orchestras and chorus and need some help on orchestration. I've only composed small chamber works, pieces for full orchestras, and pieces for solo piano, so I'd appreciate it if you could recommend some works (they don't have to be ballets) composed for small orchestras to model after. To give you an idea, the orchestra I'm composing for has roughly 15 violins, 10 violas, 5 cellos, 2 contrasbasses, 4 French horns, 2 of every woodwind, 4 trombone, 1 tuba, and percussion. Composition examples from beyond the Classical era are much appreciated. Thanks a million!

  • Computer speaker problem

I'm pretty illiterate at computers, but I'll describe my problem best as I can. I was fiddling around on my laptop on Finale 2003, a music writing program with a MIDI component when an error message popped up (it was a couple months ago, so I don't remember), it started beeping (that annoying electronic beep from inside the computer), and now my speakers don't work. I'd appreciate any help on what to do.

  • Do you get mad...?

When people post "Con te partiro" as "classical?" Just because Andrea's blind and Sarah Brightman is that godforsaken Andrew Lloyd Webber's girl...

Or how about the theme song from Amelie? That one irks me, too.

  • How do you know everything in the Bible is concrete fact?

I hope this doesn't offend anyone. But how does one really know? You can't just say because the Bible says so, because that's what the question's about! Putting into perspective the diversity of human life and the real history of Christianity as a Jewish sect evolving into the official state religion of the Roman Empire, later adopted by former pagan figureheads of newly created European states, and the Bible's history as an oral history of one of the many Semitic pastoralists of the ancient Near East, how can one say that everything in the Bible should be taken as fact? Even if you do so, there will always be discrepancies and no one interpretation since interpretations are always subject to the individual doing the process of interpreting (look up hermeneutics if you're unfamiliar). The question is about how with the "how" underlined. Is it through experience? What? Again, I'm not being aggressive. I'm just interested :)

  • Orgasmic classical pieces?

Love stuff from late-19th/early 20th centuries. Can you find more moments like these?: 1:25-1:50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it9BJrMTdbg ; 0:50-1:15 & 3:00-end http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idfdk5nPs-s ; 7:20-8:05 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0lfk2QgPhc&feature... ; the finale http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0lfk2QgPhc&feature... ; love the Rach concertos, preludes, the Bells ; 2:00-2:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tGA6bpscj8&feature... ; 2:55-3:19 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Hh3l39Ifwg ; Prokofiev piano concerto 1 and 3; the elegance and Gallic restraint of Poulenc and Ravel; the primal energy of Petrushka, Rite of Spring, Les Noces, & Carmina Burana; and the sexyness of Scriabin. Ok, wrong word. I posted a question a couple days ago and wanted to clarify it. I'm a conservatory student, so I know the big guys. I'm just looking for something new to latch onto, especially from this era.

  • Can someone help trace my Eastern European ancestors?

My mother's great-grandparents moved from somewhere in Poland to Elmira, NY in the late nineteenth century. I believe they're from the south because their country of birth was listed as Austria. Their surnames include Kalec, Drabinski, Lis, Jankowski, Blajszcak, and Krolak. Although it's always impossible and fruitless to tell simply by facial features, some of my relatives don't exhibit stereotypical Polish features. They're darker with, well, a certain je ne sais quoi facial structure. Could it possible my ancestors intermarried with different populations or are descended from other areas of Europe?

  • Can someone help me expand my list of favorite classical music pieces?

Some of my favorites are Poulenc, Faure, Stravinsky, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, Ravel, Prokofiev, & Gerswhin. I like the Russians and French and I'm familiar with the big names in each. I love pieces with imaginitive orchestration and ecstatic melodies.
