  • What should I do about SSL certification on my blog?

I just started a blog on Wordpress.com last week. My friends and family are telling me some of them can't access it because it has no security certification. This is especially true on mobile devices, but varies from one phone to another. I know they could just change settings and go to my blog that way, but most of my audience is not technical enough to know or care to do that. So it seems I need to add an SSL certification to grant access to the general public. (Bet you thought you'd never hear those words!)

Another Yahoo answer said you can't get an SSL cert on Wordpress, but that was 5 years ago. So what are my options? How do I go about adding one of these to my blog? I'm computer-savvy, but if it involves shell commands, I'll have no clue. And I'm willing to pay some money for a decent cert.

  • Where can I find seriously flexible flights?

I have perhaps the most flexible flight request in the history of ever, and I am completely unable to find a website that can help me. I have been working in China for this school year and will go home to the States in the summer. I came here one-way, and I only need a one-way ticket back home. I can leave at any time in the week of Independence Day (4th of July), and maybe even the week after that. I am centrally located in China, and can reach ANY AIRPORT IN CHINA for less than $100 by bus. I don't care where I land in the US, because I can bus to my hometown for about $100 again. I am completely unable to find a website that even allows me to search two of these highly flexible features. I don't care how uncomfortable the ride is, or how long any layovers are. After having survived in China this long, I can tolerate any living conditions. So far, the best flights I've found are $1100. Can anyone help me out here?

  • Is it possible to manipulate a magnetic field?

Usually my Google searches on this end in Marvel superheroes. What I'm talking about is, usually a magnetic dipole in 3-D space is a torus that radiates to infinity. I want to know if there's any way to fully contain it so the field lines stop at a wall.

Also, can the field lines be squeezed into a tall, narrow torus, or a large, flattened disc? What would that even do? I'm researching for a book but also just plain curious. I took electricity and magnetism in college, but it never mentioned if anything like this was even impossible.

  • What happens if the facebook EULA changes?

If at some arbitrary point in the future, facebook changes their end-user license agreement, does the new eula automatically apply to me? Or would it not, since I never signed such a thing nor was there indication in the original that it would be changed without my consent?

For example, since facebook is now owned by stockholders, let us say that the eula is changed to allow a third party to make money off of pictures I post to facebook. "Well, you gave your consent, it's right here in the new eula." If my privacy or content has been infringed, would I have a case against any of the parties involved?

I ask this simply to understand how much power the company has over me. I know that we have very little control over our profiles, but I like to hear that I have more than no control over who sees it.

  • How do I make cells unwriteable in Excel 2007?

I'm doing a project that requires me to use every second row in a spreadsheet. The alternate rows are a kind of sub-header. I also have to use formulas that occupy the entire column. The problem is that many of my formulas use division, and it really clutters up my sheet to have it looking like

    #DIV/0!

    76.4

    #DIV/0!

    104.2

    #DIV/0!

    51.4

    #DIV/0!

It's really hard to analyze my data this way. How do I make these blank rows unwriteable so that I can drag my formula down and not have to manually delete the #DIV/0!'s all the time?

  • When liberals and conservatives talk about "equality" . . .?

It seems that conservatives mean one rule applied to all, and liberals mean one result applied to all. However much that is a gross oversimplification, is it not on some level true?

For example, if one man works and another doesn't, under one rule of "Every man can only consume as much as they produce," the lazy man dies and the working man lives. But, under one result of "Every man will be paid enough to survive," the lazy man lazes and the working man works, and Frumptland, which has no lazies because they are all dead or became willing workers, ends up the next global superpower.

  • From whence does morality come?

First, a little clarification. I believe in God. I believe in morality that stems from Him. However, I am not legally allowed to invoke this for my philosophy term paper, so I need to find an atheistic origin of morality.

I'm going to assume for the purposes of my paper that moral relativism is false. There's not much else to say when you assert Hitler and Mother Teresa are morally equivalent.

To understand my question, I will pose a thought experiment. Suppose the first murder has not yet been committed. If you makes you feel better, use Cain and Abel. If you prefer the cavemen Unga and Urk, do that. Arguments against the murder are things like the emotional impact on families, the suffering of the victim, breakdown of social order, etc. However, these are the *effects* of the murder. What is it that makes murder wrong *before* it is committed?

Some might say that there is a sanctity of human life that no one is allowed to breach and still be morally good. To which I ask a number of questions: What is it about humans that makes us special? If there is an objective moral standard, it exists whether humans do or not, by definition of objective.

Then, someone might point to love and say that is the objective good. I reply, what is the explanation of love being good? Why isn't hate good? What defines these qualities other than arbitrariness? ****What is the cause of what is good?****

Again, I am not trying to prove God. I am sincerely trying to discover what could possibly be the alternative.

Whoever responds with a biological argument is missing the point. If morality is truly objective, then it is independent of everything. It exists and is the same even if biology were different, even if the universe did not exist at all. Again, I am assuming moral objectivity. I already know the implications and arguments for moral relativism.

PS: disappointed there is no philosophy section. The R&S crowd is brutal, snippish, and prone to irrationality on all sides.

  • If matte/energy cannot be created nor destroyed, what does that make vacuum particles?

Also known as virtual particles. Is conservation of mass/energy bunk when you get small enough? If so, why does macroscopy display this fake law?

  • Which way do Muslims pray if they can't find Mecca?

And not just once, but on a relatively permanent basis. Like, lost at sea with no navigation skills or a Lost in Space scenario. Surely there is a default action listed in the Koran for this.

For all the haters, please flame elsewhere. I am not a Muslim, nor am I remotely considering Islam. I just want to expand my knowledge base and have a realistic character for the story I am writing.

  • What is the newest version of Wordperfect that is available for free?

I would think that it would be v10 or 11, since those are about seven years old, and the patent will have expired. I most want to find to find a copy of Wordperfect 12, since older ones are unstable and newer ones are identical but more costly. Would you please source your answer by posting the download link?

  • Atheists, how do you respond to the Cosmological Argument?

This argument has a lot of possible iterations, so I'm going to post the particular logic flow that I want answered.

We start with only two premeses.

1.) The Second law of Thermodynamics is true.

2.) Everything that has a beginning was brought into existence by something other than itself.

We will first use (1.) to prove that the universe has a beginning.

1.) The second law of thermo tells us that disorder is accumulating in the universe.

2.) If the universe had infinite order, then the second law of thermo would not apply, since a finite amount of disorder taken from infinite order would still be infinite order.

3.) Since we know the second law of thermo is true, we conclue that the universe has finite order.

4.) Also, if the universe has existed in the past for infinite time, then the second law of thermo would result in a universe of zero order.

5.) Since we have yet reached heat death (zero order), we conclude that the universe has existed for a finite amount of time.

6.) Thus, the universe has a beginning.

7.) Invoking premise number (2.), that something which does not exist cannot bring itself into existence, we know that some outer cause was responsible for bringing the universe into existence.

8.) If that outer cause had a beginning, then another cause created that cause.

9.) By mathematical induction, we realize that only an entity which has existed to negative infinite time could possibly have brought anything into existence.

10.) The only thing which is known to have existed with infinite time is God.

    QED

    as a corollary,

11.) All other propositions, being theory and requiring extra explanation, fail under Occam's Razor.

Additionally, anyone who posts inanity such as "God was created by man," or some such shenanigans without extensive deductive explanation will be reported for being a troll. Thank you for those who contribute to the discussion.

  • Is it illegal to desecrate a corpse?

You know, for when the outbreak happens. I don't want to get arrested for self-defense against the undead horde. For that matter, what qualifies as desecrating a corpse? Do blades, bullets, and explosives all apply? What do international war conventions say about acts of violence against the deceased? It would suck if the Geneva Convention prevents the world's armies from taking action.

  • How big are the world's militaries?

More specifically, how many small arms does each country have in its armories? I suppose that information would be protected for security, but the data must be recorded in some sort of database (can't have lost firearms, now, can we?). If someone could find a link for me, that would absolutely fantastical. I've heard the UN say Europe has 16 million military small arms. They must have gotten that number from somewhere, right?

  • What is the ugliest sports car?

That is, among all the sports cars that have ever been commercially available (no concept cars), which one is the ugliest of all time? And I mean something that would be considered a sports car even today. Yes, the Model T was the best for its time, but it hardly qualifies. Negative 2 points to anyone who mentions a DeLorean.

  • How do you take the integral of a scatter plot?

My data kind of makes this blob in the middle of the graph, and I want to figure out how much area this blob has. Is it mathematically possible to do this? Would Excel or a similar program have something to approximate what I want to do? The data has no single line of best fit, but two lines could define the boundaries if a program worked it out automatically.

  • Why did the MP5 go extinct?

I understand that the paperwork behind full-autos are not practical for most shooters, and this is not about full-auto. The semi-auto HK 94 existed in limited production a while back. But nowhere can I find a 9mm conversion of HK 5.56 guns, which are plentiful for the AR-15 platform. There are neither off-brands of the MP5, even though it has fully fallen out of production in favor of the UMP/USC. Actually, .22LR knock-offs are available, but of course no caliber conversions exist.

Why is it that the MP5 platform has been so far removed from the market, and with no hope of returning?

  • How do I transfer large files to myself?

I am sending a 150Mb file from a Mac to a Windows system. Both these computers are for my use and it would be against company policy to post the data on a website for public viewing. My USB flash drive does not work for the Mac, as it thinks I am giving it a blank CD when it has data on it. The Mac has internet, but is wireless-incapable.
